Abstract Political will is the key to public health policy-making and a major driving force for the attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in any nation. To achieve UHC, the Indian government laid down National Health Policy in 1983 and updated it in 2002 and recently in 2017. This recent policy emphasized increasing healthcare spending and economic growth. In the current budget, there is an increment in the share of GDP of 0.34% from the previous year's allocation, but still staggering for the envisaged 2.5% to achieve UHC. Enthusiastic announcements of opening 157 new nursing colleges, a separate programme for eliminating sickle cell anemia by 2047, and Centers of excellence establishment for pharma companies for promoting research and development and focusing on Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) are the few overarching and new highlights in the current budget. But, in a country so huge and varied in terms of its needs in every sector, the announcements in the financial budget speech taking India forward in becoming a "shining star" is a matter of debate. This is an attempt to review the budget for this financial year in the healthcare sector and what it means: is the country willing to build a self-driven healthcare sector in the Amrit Kaal with strong public finances and a robust financial sector through "efforts by all"?

Abstract The realization of Universal Health Coverage requires adequate healthcare financing and human resources to provide financial protection to the economically disadvantaged population by covering their medicine, diagnostics, and service costs. Conventionally, inadequate public healthcare financing and the lack of skilled human resources are considered as the major barriers towards achieving UHC in India. To strengthen the Indian healthcare system, there has been significant increase budgetary allocation towards healthcare, a national health protection scheme targeting low-income households, upgrading of primary health-care and expansion of the health work-force. Nevertheless, an evolving paradigm for improving holistic health, sanitation, nutrition, gender equity, drug accessibility and affordability, innovative initiatives in national health programs for reduction of maternal deaths, tuberculosis and HIV burden and the utilization of information technology in healthcare provision of the underserved and the marginalized is gaining rapid acceleration. These represent a genuine innovation towards fulfillment of UHC goals for India.

Abstract The lack of adherence to the recommended rabies post-exposure prophylaxis guidelines by physicians during encounters with cases of animal bite re-exposure results in enormous avoidable economic costs, wastage of scarce resources, and is a significant but neglected health concern. The challenges encountered in managing animal bite re-exposure cases arise from deficiencies in the existing health system reflect an overlooked and largely unreported ethical dilemma. Healthcare providers in managing the ethical demands arising from this situation generally tend to uphold the principle of non-maleficence while overlooking the claims of distributive justice and patient autonomy.

Abstract According to the World Health Organization, over 41 million cases of COVID-19 and 1 million deaths have been reported globally. More than 7 million cases of coronavirus have been reported in India alone. The growing number of cases of coronavirus worldwide poses numerous challenges to the country's current healthcare delivery system, especially in developing nations such as India. In such a situation, the task of maintaining continuity in the provision of comprehensive primary healthcare services in the community becomes a big challenge. This article discusses how family physicians can help to augment the healthcare system at the time of pandemic by providing easily accessible, holistic healthcare and by use of telemedicine. It also talks about the need to mainstream family medicine into the undergraduate and postgraduate medical curriculum and establish a robust network of family physicians trained in outbreak response and disease preparedness. For this study we looked for all papers with the terms 'Family physician', 'COVID-19', 'pandemic', and 'Primary health care'. Databases searched include PubMed, Google Scholar and DOAJ, using key words - family physician, family medicine, primary healthcare, COVID-19, and pandemic in different combinations.
