Abstract Using 2.45x10;{7} psi(2S) decays collected with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we present the most precise measurements of magnetic dipole transitions in the charmonium system. We measure B(psi(2S)-->gammaeta_{c})=(4.32+/-0.16+/-0.60)x10;{-3}, B(J/psi-->gammaeta_{c})/B(psi(2S)-->gammaeta_{c})=4.59+/-0.23+/-0.64, and B(J/psi-->gammaeta_{c})=(1.98+/-0.09+/-0.30)%. We observe a distortion in the eta_{c} line shape due to the photon-energy dependence of the magnetic dipole transition rate. We find that measurements of the eta_{c} mass are sensitive to the line shape, suggesting an explanation for the discrepancy between measurements of the eta_{c} mass in radiative transitions and other production mechanisms.

Abstract: ... when planetary temperatures were up to ~3° C warmer than today ( Kim and Crowley, 2000, doi:10.1029/1999PA000459 ...

Abstract Thirty years after oxygen isotope records from microfossils deposited in ocean sediments confirmed the hypothesis that variations in the Earth's orbital geometry control the ice ages (Hays et al., 1976, doi:10.1126/science.194.4270.1121), fundamental questions remain over the response of the Antarctic ice sheets to orbital cycles (Raymo and Huybers, 2008, doi:10.1038/nature06589). Furthermore, an understanding of the behaviour of the marine-based West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS) during the 'warmer-than-present' early-Pliocene epoch (~5-3 Myr ago) is needed to better constrain the possible range of ice-sheet behaviour in the context of future global warming (Solomon et al., 2007). Here we present a marine glacial record from the upper 600 m of the AND-1B sediment core recovered from beneath the northwest part of the Ross ice shelf by the ANDRILL programme and demonstrate well-dated, ~40-kyr cyclic variations in ice-sheet extent linked to cycles in insolation influenced by changes in the Earth's axial tilt (obliquity) during the Pliocene. Our data provide direct evidence for orbitally induced oscillations in the WAIS, which periodically collapsed, resulting in a switch from grounded ice, or ice shelves, to open waters in the Ross embayment when planetary temperatures were up to ~3° C warmer than today ( Kim and Crowley, 2000, doi:10.1029/1999PA000459) and atmospheric CO2 concentration was as high as ~400 p.p.m.v. (van der Burgh et al., 1993, doi:10.1126/science.260.5115.1788, Raymo et al., 1996, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(95)00048-8). The evidence is consistent with a new ice-sheet/ice-shelf model (Pollard and DeConto, 2009, doi:10.1038/nature07809) that simulates fluctuations in Antarctic ice volume of up to +7 m in equivalent sea level associated with the loss of the WAIS and up to +3 m in equivalent sea level from the East Antarctic ice sheet, in response to ocean-induced melting paced by obliquity. During interglacial times, diatomaceous sediments indicate high surface-water productivity, minimal summer sea ice and air temperatures above freezing, suggesting an additional influence of surface melt (Huybers, 2006, doi:10.1126/science.1125249) under conditions of elevated CO2.

Abstract Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that arises after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Despite affecting around 7% of the population, there are currently no definitive biological signatures or biomarkers used in the diagnosis of PTSD. Thus, the search for clinically relevant and reproducible biomarkers has been a major focus of the field. With significant advances of large-scale multi-omic studies that include genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data, promising findings have been made, but the field still has fallen short. Amongst the possible biomarkers examined, one area is often overlooked, understudied, or inappropriately investigated: the field of redox biology. Redox molecules are free radical and/or reactive species that are generated as a consequence of the necessity of electron movement for life. These reactive molecules, too, are essential for life, but in excess are denoted as "oxidative stress" and often associated with many diseases. The few studies that have examined redox biology parameters have often utilized outdated and nonspecific methods, as well as have reported confounding results, which has made it difficult to conclude the role for redox in PTSD. Herein, we provide a foundation of how redox biology may underlie diseases like PTSD, critically examine redox studies of PTSD, and provide future directions the field can implement to enhance standardization, reproducibility, and accuracy of redox assessments for the use of diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of this debilitating mental health disorder.

Abstract Objective: Evidence is mixed on how young adults' cannabis and alcohol use and co-use patterns have changed following recreational cannabis legalization (RCL). Incorporating measures of frequency and intensity of use we examined changes in college students' use and co-use patterns following RCL.
Method: Four-year college students (n = 845,589) ages 18-24 years participated in the National College Health Assessment between 2008 and 2018, including students from 7 states that enacted RCL and 42 that did not. Latent profile analyses identified six patterns of use from four indicator variables tapping frequency of cannabis use and frequency and intensity of alcohol use: Abstainers, Light Alcohol Only, Heavy Alcohol Only, Predominantly Heavy Cannabis Use, Moderate Co-use, and Heavy Co-use.
Results: Regression models that adjusted for time and person- and institution-level covariates indicated that students' exposure to RCL was associated with lower odds of being in the two alcohol-only use classes, higher odds of being in the Predominantly Heavy Cannabis Use, Heavy Co-Use and Abstainers classes, and was not significantly related to Moderate Co-Use class membership.
Conclusions: RCL was positively associated with patterns of frequent cannabis use and frequent and intense co-use but also with abstinence. Use of alcohol-only became less prevalent after RCL. Research on how RCL influences the prevalence of problematic patterns of substance use will inform and improve prevention efforts.

Abstract Introduction: Medical marijuana is permitted in 36 states; 15 states allow recreational marijuana use. Previous surveys showed that family physicians were concerned about the physical and mental health effects of medical marijuana use, but the impact of recreational marijuana legalization and liberalization of marijuana laws on physician attitudes is unknown.
Methods: A survey was distributed to 1582 members of the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians' listserv, with items on individual and practice characteristics and experience with and attitudes toward medical marijuana. The results of this survey were compared with that of a nearly identical survey conducted with the same group in 2011.

Abstract Discovery that popcorn (Zea mays L.) PI 340856 was resistant to corn earworm (Heliothis zea (Boddie)) led us to evaluate 34 additional lines developed by J.C. Eldredge for resistance to corn earworm, European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner)), and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith). The 35 lines were evaluated for corn earworm resistance in the field with artificial infestation at Ames, Iowa, and Tifton, Ga., and with natural infestation at Hermiston, Oreg. None of the lines was better than the resistant check, 'Zapalote Chico' (PI 217413), at any of the three locations. Several lines had significantly better damage ratings than the susceptible checks. A bioassay of these materials for corn earworm resistance was run in the laboratory at Ames and Tifton by adding dried maize silks to laboratory diets and monitoring insect growth and development. Six lines were evaluated as resistant at both locations. In the field at Ames, two of these six lines were rated resistant to European corn borer. Fall armyworm field resistance ratings at Tifton indicated that one line was resistant after 7 d, but it was intermediate after 14 d. The J.C. Eldredge collection of popcorns provides sources of antibiosis to corn earworm and European corn borer and is available for use by plant breeders. Corn earworm resistance may be enhanced by breeding for husk protection, which may provide an environment that will capitalize on the antibiotic factors found in the maize silks.

Abstract Background: According to the stereotype content model, individuals with intellectual disability are perceived as having greater warmth-related traits (e.g. sociable and humorous) and fewer competence-related traits (e.g. independence and intelligence).
Methods: We examined college students' perceived costs and benefits of mentoring peers with intellectual disability on stereotype-consistent (i.e. socially oriented) or inconsistent (i.e. academically oriented) tasks. Participants read about peer mentoring programmes that helped college students with or without intellectual disability on socially or academically oriented tasks before reporting their perceived costs and benefits of peer mentoring.
Results: Mentoring students with intellectual disability was associated with greater benefits (i.e. connectedness between mentors and students, student utility and mentor benefits) on academically oriented tasks but greater costs for mentors on socially oriented tasks. Additionally, participants reported that they would experience greater positive feelings if they were to mentor a student with an intellectual disability. However, the perceived benefits to the student and some costs (i.e. discomfort, paternalism and costs to student) were not influenced by whether the student had an intellectual disability and the type of mentoring task.
Discussion: Results indicate individuals find greater rewards working with individuals with intellectual disability on stereotype-inconsistent tasks and offer suggestions for postsecondary education peer mentoring programmes.

Abstract: ... atherosclerosis. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved). ...

Abstract Objective: In a midlife sample of adults, the present study tested the extent to which changes in psychological stress relate to the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease over multiple years and explored the potential moderating role of cardiometabolic risk.
Method: Participants were screened to exclude those with clinical cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, and other chronic illnesses, as well as those taking psychotropic, cardiovascular, lipid, and glucose control medications. At baseline (
Results: Regression models showed that the change in psychological stress from baseline to follow-up was positively associated with the corresponding change in IMT, with covariate control for age at baseline, sex at birth, and variability in length of follow-up across participants. Cardiometabolic risk factors did not statistically moderate this longitudinal association. In exploratory analyses, cardiometabolic risk factors also did not statistically mediate this association.
Conclusion: These longitudinal findings suggest that increases in psychological stress in midlife relate to corresponding increases in subclinical atherosclerosis. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).
