Abstract This study was conducted to check the extent of nursing professionalism, time pressure, infection control, organizational culture, and the infection control practices of nurses, and to assess the factors that impart an influence on their infection control practices. This is a descriptive survey study aimed at the assessment of factors that impart an influence on the infection control practice of nurses by using a structuralized questionnaire. As the result of this study, the infection control practices of nurses have a positive correlation with the time pressure (r = 0.16, p = 0.034) and the organizational culture for infection control (r = 0.29, p < 0.001). Factors that affect the infection control practices included the organizational culture for infection control (β = 0.29, p < 0.001) and time pressure (β = 0.16, p = 0.024), with the explanation power of 10%. It was possible to confirm that the affirmative organizational culture for infection control plays an important role in enhancing the infection control practices of nurses. Accordingly, it is necessary to provide administrative and financial support from the organization, including support by the management and administrators of clinical practices, as well as the provision of required commodities in order for nurses to execute infection control in accordance with the prescribed regulations.

Abstract Background: Evidence for the long-term use of antiplatelet drugs to prevent hepatic vascular complications (HVC) is scarce in liver transplantation (LT).
Methods: From national claim data, LT recipients (about 80 % of living donor LT [LDLT]) without graft loss, HVC, or cardiovascular events within 1 year, were classified into those who took antiplatelets for ≥1 year (n = 1744) and for <1 year (n = 1975). Outcomes were compared after the 1-postoperative year index time point.
Results: During a mean follow up of 4.5 years, the risk of graft loss was similar between the groups (aHR 1.16, P = 0.23). However, ≥1-year antiplatelet therapy was associated with a higher risk of graft loss after 3 years (aHR 2.19, P < 0.01). HVC (aHR 0.94, P = 0.87) and major adverse cardiac events (aHR 1.20, P = 0.46) did not correlate with antiplatelet therapy for both groups. In contrast, ≥1-year antiplatelet therapy showed a significantly higher risk of severe bleeding compared to <1-year antiplatelet therapy (aHR 2.24, P < 0.01). This trend was similar in the LDLT subgroup. In our cohort, antiplatelet therapy for ≥1 year did not improve graft survival or HVC; however, it increased the risk of severe bleeding.
Conclusion: We recommend against antiplatelet therapy for more than 1 year in clinically stable LT recipients.

Abstract Introduction: Alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS) are widely used for hand hygiene due to the coronavirus disease pandemic. However, risk awareness regarding its adverse effects is lacking. We aim to report a case of ocular chemical burn that showed severe clinical presentation associated with ABHS.
Patient concerns: A 5-year-old girl presented with severe left eye pain after 62% gel-type ABHS splashed into her eye.
Diagnosis: On slit lamp examination, a near total corneal and conjunctival epithelial defect with limbal pale on the lower half of the cornea was noted. Severe ocular burn by ABHS was prominent with suspected limbal stem cell damage.
Interventions: She was hospitalized and was prescribed topical medications including antibiotics, steroid eye drops with preservative-free artificial tears, and oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Outcomes: Despite intensive medical treatments, the corneal and conjunctival epithelial defects showed no improvement up to the 4th hospital day. After additional instillation of autoserum eye drops to promote epithelial healing, the corneal epithelium barely recovered from the temporal limbus. On the third week of admission, the epithelial defect was completely resolved without corneal opacity, although with minimal symblepharon in the lower fornix.
Conclusions: Gel-type ABHS can cause severe form of ocular chemical burn such as delayed ocular surface healing. In clinical setting, immediate and thorough rinsing of alcohol-based gel and early intensive treatment are crucial.

Abstract Schizophyllan (SPG), a β-glucan from Schizophyllum commune, is recognized for its antioxidant, immunoregulatory, and anticancer activities. In this study, its effects on bone cells, particularly osteoclasts and osteoblasts, were examined. We demonstrated that SPG dose-dependently inhibited osteoclastogenesis and reduced gene expression associated with osteoclast differentiation. SPG also decreased bone resorption and F-actin ring formation. This inhibition could have been due to the downregulation of transcription factors c-Fos and nuclear factor of activated T cells 1 (NFATc1) via the MAPKs (JNK and p38), IκBα, and PGC1β/PPARγ pathways. In coculture, SPG lowered osteoclastogenic activity in calvaria-derived osteoblasts by reducing macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) expression. In addition, SPG slightly enhanced osteoblast differentiation, as evidenced by increased differentiation marker gene expression and alizarin red staining. It also exhibited antiresorptive effects in a lipopolysaccharide-induced calvarial bone loss model. These results indicated a dual role of SPG in bone cell regulation by suppressing osteoclastogenesis and promoting osteoblast differentiation. Thus, SPG could be a therapeutic agent for bone resorption-related diseases such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontitis.
