Abstract David Landgrebe, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Purdue University Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS), was a primary innovator in the field of digital image analysis and remote sensing of the environment. He and his LARS colleagues, along with a selected few other researchers at institutions including the University of Michigan, University of California Berkley, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and NASA Johnson Space Center, defined and developed remote sensing technology to monitor the Earth's terrestrial environment. This research led to the Landsat program, which has continued to monitor the Earth's land areas for a half century. These technologies have defined new fields of scientific query in digital image analysis, biophysical remote sensing, as well as remote sensing science and applications. Dr. Landgrebe's contributions to these research areas were substantial and profound. Understanding the early evolution of work is critical to understanding how this technology is still advancing today. The authors hope that current and future students of these fields will benefit from understanding how this all began.

Abstract On February 5, 2022, the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) lost a giant when Dr. David "Dave" Beukelman passed away. As the readership of this journal is aware, Dave was one of the principal founders of the AAC field and devoted his career to providing a voice to those without one. Before AAC became a field, people who could not talk were invisible or seldom noticed, unless they were in the way. For more than 40 years, he was a catalyst for change in AAC clinical practice, research, dissemination, teaching, and public policy development. This tribute aims to honor Dave's lifelong mission of serving others by sharing some of his most timeless and valued lessons. Each lesson begins with one of Dave's most enduring quotes that is then followed by a brief synopsis of the lesson Dave hoped to convey.

Abstract Background: Valve-sparing aortic procedures, including the David and Yacoub procedures, have emerged as the dominant approaches in aortic aneurysm surgery, preserving the native aortic valve and thereby conferring significant prognostic benefits to the patient. Over the years, these procedures have also shown promise in patients with bicuspid valve-related aortopathy. This systematic review and meta-analysis presents the most up-to-date data on perioperative outcomes, freedom from secondary reoperation, and freedom from mortality for bicuspid valve patients undergoing valve-sparing aortic operations.
Methods: The methods for this systematic review and meta-analysis adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement. Four databases were searched, ultimately yielding 19 papers for inclusion, using appropriate search terminology. Meta-analysis using proportions or means, as appropriate, were applied. Kaplan-Meier curves were digitized and aggregated using previously validated techniques.
Results: A total of 1,159 patients were included. Males accounted for 87.4% of the cohort. The mean age of the cohort was 44.9 years. The mean aortic root diameter was estimated to be 46.3 mm, with an estimated range from 38 to 54 mm. Thirty-day mortality rate was estimated to be 1.7%. Eighty-five percent of patients in this series received the David approach, with the remainder receiving the Yacoub approach. Overall, there was low heterogeneity observed for the mean length of intensive care stay, while high heterogeneity was observed for the other remaining variables of interest. Kaplan-Meier survival estimation at 5, 10, and 15 years was 96%, 90%, and 87%, respectively. Kaplan-Meier freedom from secondary reoperation at 5, 10, and 15 years was 96%, 91%, and 88%, respectively.
Conclusions: This review demonstrates the durability and safety of the David and Yacoub valve-sparing procedures across long-term follow-up in bicuspid aortic valve patients. These procedures offer significant freedom from mortality and secondary reoperations on the aorta and valve and will likely continue to demonstrate excellent results into the future. There is a clear transition towards the David procedure, with the bulk of contemporary literature publishing on this technique.

Abstract David Triggle's career as an educator, researcher, essayist and ethicist in many ways has paralleled the post WWII emergence of the "biomedical research ecosystem" that originated in the concept of the "Endless Frontier". In the ensuing 70 years biomedical research has irreparably changed the nature of society with vaccines, the birth control pill and new generations of drugs and biologics to treat infections, sexually transmitted diseases, psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases. These have led to a shift in the population demographic to the elderly and the chronically sick leading to major issues in the provision of effective and affordable healthcare for much of the world's population. In the present article, in addition to providing a brief biography and an appreciation of David Triggle's contributions to science, the authors expand on three topics in which he has had a major interest: improving the quality, reproducibility and relevance of basic biomedical research; declining career opportunities for graduates in an era of decreased funding-the end of the "Endless Frontier"; and the dynamic between the provision for universal healthcare and the dysfunctional, wasteful and politicized systems of the current medical-industrial complex in delivering healthcare.
