Abstract FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) has a major regulatory role in the timing of flowering in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. and has more recently been shown to influence germination. Here, we investigated the conditions under which FLC influences germination, and demonstrated that its effect depends on the level of primary and secondary dormancy and the temperature of seed imbibition. We tested the germination response of genotypes with different degrees of FLC activity over the course of after-ripening and after secondary dormancy induction by hot stratification. Genotypes with high FLC-activity showed higher germination; this response was greatest when seeds exhibited primary dormancy or were induced into secondary dormancy by hot stratification. In this study, which used less dormant seeds, the effect of FLC was more evident at 22°C, the less permissive germination temperature, than at 10°C, in contrast to prior published results that used more dormant seeds. Thus, because effects of FLC variation depend on dormancy, and because the range of temperature that permits germination also depends on dormancy, the temperature at which FLC affects germination can also vary with dormancy. Finally, we document that the effect of FLC can depend on FRIGIDA and that FRIGIDA itself appears to influence germination. Thus, pleiotropy between germination and flowering pathways in A. thaliana extends beyond FLC and involves other genes in the FLC genetic pathway.

Abstract Pesticides can be found in beehives for several reasons, including contamination from surrounding crops or for their use by beekeepers, which poses a risk to bee ecosystems and consumers. Therefore, efficient and sensitive methods are needed for determining pesticide residues in bee products. In this study, a new analytical method has been developed and validated to determine seven acaricides (atrazine, chlorpyrifos, chlorfenvinphos, α-endosulfan, bromopropylate, coumaphos, and τ-fluvalinate) in bee pollen using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. After an optimization study, the best sample treatment was obtained when using a modified QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) method employing an ethyl acetate and cyclohexane as the extractant mixture, and a mixture of salts for the clean-up step. A chromatographic analysis (<21 min) was performed in an Agilent DB-5MS column, and it was operated under programmed temperature conditions. The method was fully validated in terms of selectivity, limits of detection (0.2-3.1 µg kg

Abstract Background: We carry out a review of the history and biological activities of one domesticated gene in higher primates, SETMAR, by discussing current controversies. Our purpose is to open a new outlook that will serve as a framework for future work about SETMAR, possibly in the field of cognition development.
Main body: What is newly important about SETMAR can be summarized as follows: (1) the whole protein sequence is under strong purifying pressure; (2) its role is to strengthen existing biological functions rather than to provide new ones; (3) it displays a tissue-specific pattern of expression, at least for the alternative-splicing it undergoes. Studies reported here demonstrate that SETMAR protein(s) may be involved in essential networks regulating replication, transcription and translation. Moreover, during embryogenesis, SETMAR appears to contribute to brain development.
Short conclusion: Our review underlines for the first time that SETMAR directly interacts with genes involved in brain functions related to vocalization and vocal learning. These findings pave the way for future works regarding SETMAR and the development of cognitive abilities in higher primates.

Abstract A series of C-glycosyl ethylphosphonophosphate analogues of UDP-Glc, UDP-Gal, UDP-GlcNAc and GDP-Fuc were synthesized from the corresponding C-glycosyl ethylphosphonic acids. Analogues were obtained as alpha-anomers through either diastereoselective photo-induced radical addition of glycosyl bromides (D-Glc, D-Gal and L-Fuc) to diethyl vinylphosphonate, or a multi-step sequence (D-GlcNAc), with subsequent coupling with morpholidate-activated nucleotide monophosphates. The in vitro inhibitory activity of UDP-Gal, GDP-Fuc and UDP-GlcNAc analogues towards glycosyltransferases (beta-1,4-GalT, FUT3 and LgtA) was evaluated through a competition fluorescence assay and IC(50) values of 40 microM, 2 mM and 3.5 mM were obtained, respectively.

Abstract Indium-mediated alkynylation reaction was studied for the direct preparation of C-glycosides. Easily available starting sugar derivatives with an acetyl group at the anomeric position were tested as electrophiles toward alkynylindium reagents under Barbier conditions. Good yields and stereoselectivities were observed during the reaction. The alkynylation was applied to the synthesis of an alpha-(1-->6)-C-disaccharide analogue of isomaltoside.
