Abstract Abstract: This report summarizes the highlights of a lively discussion between leaders in the cochlear implant (CI) field who also bring significant leadership experience at the practice and health system levels, as well as policy and research perspectives. The discussion revealed several areas in which established patterns of practice should be reconsidered to facilitate wider acceptance of the CI as part of an integrated continuum of hearing healthcare. The importance of continued innovation to advance outcomes, lower cost, and increase access was emphasized. Trends in healthcare funding, which increasingly reward quality at lower cost, will also challenge longstanding assumptions that have influenced program design. Proactive efforts that pursue consistent value in the episode of surgical care while establishing innovative delivery models for audiological and rehabilitation services are the best hope for a future of equitable access and expanding impact.

Abstract At ceremonies held in Baltimore Maryland on May, 4, 2002, Dr. Howard A Pearson, Professor of Pediatrics, was awarded the John A. Howland award of the American Pediatric Society, probably the most prestigious award of American Pediatrics. Dr. Pearson had been nominated for the award by Dr. Norman Siegel. The Department of Pediatrics Grand Rounds on Wednesday noon, October 26, 2002 was originally scheduled as a repetition of the presentation by Dr. Siegel and the acceptance by Dr. Pearson for those who could not be in Baltimore. However; in a number of meetings, unknown to Dr. Siegel, it was unanimously decided that it would be very appropriate to instead honor him as he stepped down from his position as Vice- and Interim Chairman of Pediatrics, and to formally thank him for his long and faithful service to the Department of Pediatrics, the Yale University School of Medicine, and the Yale New Haven Hospital.

Abstract The purpose of this presentation is to describe the life and work of Dr. Cecil Watson, Regents Professor of Medicine, Emeritus, at the University of Minnesota. This objective is achieved in an interview with Dr. Watson, conducted by his associate of many years, Dr. Robert B. Howard, Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. In this presentation Dr. John Z. Bowers first describes the series "Leaders in American Medicine". Dr. Howard and Dr. Watson then discuss Dr.Watson's early college years and the events and people which led to his interest in medicine. He discusses the teachers at the University of Minnesota who influenced his career including Dr. Bell, Professor of Pathology, Dr. George Farr, andDr. Paul Rowe. His arrangement with Dr. Bell led to what would now be considered an M.D./Ph.D. program. He describes his interest in histoplasmosis and bile pigments. This interest led him to work and study with Dr. Hans Fischer in Munich intrying to isolate stercobilinogen. He discusses his return to this country, during the depression when he took a poorly paying job as an intern. He went to the University of Minnesota to become a medical resident and while there continued his research on bile pigments, porphyrin, and porphyria. Dr. Watson then compares and contrasts his medical education with the type of medical education given today. He discusses the role of the private institution in relationship to medicaleducation. He briefly describes his involvement in the Manhattan Project and explores his current work at Northwestern University.

Abstract The response of Riesling and Chardonnay to 7 rootstocks (own roots, Elvira, 1616 E, 3309, 101-14, 5 BB, SO 4 (actually 5 C?; Ref.)) in the northeast USA is discussed. In this region, rootstocks producing excess vigour are undesirable because this characteristic is associated with poor bud survival during the winter. Results from 4 different locations have shown that the V. berlandieri-derived rootstocks are too vigorous and suffer excessive winter injury. On the other hand, the 'devigourating' V. labrusca-derived rootstocks have poor vine health due to low phylloxera and/or lime tolerance. For the present time, the moderately vigorous 3309 and 101-14 give the best results. (P. Dry, Adelaide) [A 3109]
