    Abstract Isolated fallopian tube anomalies are a rare group of disorders, usually observed in otherwise asymptomatic patients. If symptomatic, the patients may present with infertility or unspecified abdominal pains. Various aetiologies have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, ranging from congenital to vascular events. Diagnosis is very challenging because in most cases those abnormalities are not easily seen on ultrasound, computed tomography, or even magnetic resonance imaging. The most objective and certain diagnosis, however, can be obtained through laparoscopy with an associated histopathological examination performed if necessary. Management of this rare group of disorders remains unclear - because the number of cases is relatively small, there is no consensus on treatment. We present a case of a 22-year-old woman with no relevant clinical history and no sexual activity with large bilateral hydrosalpinx that developed as a result of bilateral distal fallopian tube segmental absence with associated occlusion and concomitant endometriotic implants in the vicinity of the left ovarian fossa and the peritoneum of the rectouterine pouch. To our best knowledge, only a few similar cases have been described in the literature. We summarise the available descriptions of this group of pathologies, present theories that have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, and provide various classifications of those disorders.

    Abstract Objective: The aim of this study is to report the epidemiologic characteristics of tumors of the cerebellopontine angle (CPAT) and internal acoustic meatus in adult Polish population throughout the second decade of XXI century and to analyze their treatment.
    Material and methods: A retrospective analysis of patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and internal acoustic meatus tumors diagnosed in Poland in 2011-2020 was performed. Data recorded in the National Health Fund (NHF) database were analyzed. International Classification of Diseases codes (ICD-9 and ICD-10) were used to identify study group patients and treatment procedures.
    Results: From 2011 to 2020 6,173 Polish adult patients were diagnosed with cerebellopontine angle and internal acoustic meatus tumors. The average incidence in Poland is 1.99 per 100,000 residents/year. It mostly affects women (61.64%), and the average age of patients is 53.78 years. The incidence has steadily increased over the past decade. Treatment has changed significantly over the years, with a definite increase in the number of patients treated with radiotherapy (from 0.54 to 19.34%), and a decrease in surgical therapies (from 41.67 to 6.8%). The most common symptoms were vertigo and/or dizziness (43.48%) and sensorineural hearing loss (39.58%). 4.65% of patients suffered from sudden deafness, in this group of patients the risk of CPAT detection was the highest (6.25 / 1000 patients).
    Conclusions: The total incidence of CPAT and demographic characteristics of patients were comparable to other studies. Our study demonstrated the increased number of patients are being treated with radiotherapy and fewer with microsurgery. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an uncommon manifestation of CPAT but proper diagnosis should be undertaken because the risk of diagnosis such tumors is greater in this group.

    Abstract The article presents the results of phase transition studies in which the following substances and their mixtures were tested: 100% palm oil, 100% paraffin, 100% hydrogenated palm oil, 50% palm oil + 50% paraffin, 50% hydrogenated palm oil + 50% palm oil, 33% hydrogenated palm oil + 33% palm oil + 33% soft paraffin, 20% hydrogenated palm oil + 30% palm oil + 50% soft paraffin, 50% hydrogenated palm oil + 50% palm oil + copper, and 50% hydrogenated palm oil + 50% palm oil + iron. The measurements were carried out on a station for testing phase-change materials (PCMs) designed specifically for the analysis of phase changes. Viscosity values were also determined for the tested materials, and their potential impact on heat accumulation was assessed. The primary goal of the experiment was to determine some key thermodynamic parameters, including transition time, transition heat, specific heat, and dynamic viscosity at 58 °C. A one-way ANOVA test confirmed the statistical significance of minimum transition temperature, maximum transition temperature, and phase transition time, validating the reliability and utility of the results. The melting point, crucial for applications involving phase changes, was identified as an important factor. The careful selection of components allows for the customization of properties tailored to specific applications. A significant result is that the analyzed substances with higher specific heat values tend to have a higher average dynamic viscosity. The Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.82 indicated a strong positive association between the average dynamic viscosity and the heat of fusion of the substances examined. This suggests that changes in the heat of fusion significantly influence alterations in dynamic viscosity. Substances with higher specific heat values tend to exhibit higher average dynamic viscosity, emphasizing the direct impact of composition on viscosity.

    Abstract Clathrate hydrates are among the most intensively studied H-bond inclusion compounds. Despite the broad definition for this class of compounds, their meaning commonly refers to closed polyhedral nanocages that encapsulate small guest molecules. On the other hand, larger solutes enforce another type of encapsulation because of the solute size effect. Herein, we report a series of structures containing various molecules encapsulated by intercalated water layers constructed of polycyclic moieties of L4(4)8(8) topology. We parametrized the corrugation of individual layers and characterized interactions governing their formation. We suggested which could be categorized as two-dimensional clathrates based on the character of intra-layer interactions and effects observed between entrapped molecules and water-based intercalators.

    Abstract Introduction and hypothesis: The obturator artery (ObA) is described as a branch of the anterior division of the internal iliac artery. It arises close to the origin of the umbilical artery, where it is crossed by the ureter. The main goal of the present study was to create an anatomical map of the ObA demonstrating the most frequent locations of the vessel's origin and course.
    Methods: In May 2022, an evaluation of the findings from 75 consecutive patients who underwent computed tomography angiography studies of the abdomen and pelvis was performed.
    Results: The presented results are based on a total of 138 arteries. Mostly, ObA originated from the anterior trunk of the internal iliac artery (79 out of 138; 57.2%). The median ObA diameter at its origin was found to be 3.34 mm (lower quartile [LQ] = 3.00; upper quartile [UQ] = 3.87). The median cross-sectional area of the ObA at its origin was found to be 6.31 mm
    Conclusions: Our study developed a unique arterial anatomical map of the ObA, showcasing its origin and course. Moreover, we have provided more data for straightforward intraoperative identification of the corona mortis through simple anatomical landmarks, including the pubic symphysis. Interestingly, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the morphometric properties of the aberrant ObAs and the "normal" ObAs originating from the internal iliac artery was found. It is hoped that our study may aid in reducing the risk of serious hemorrhagic complications during various surgical procedures in the pelvic region.

    Abstract The widespread ubiquity of hate speech affects people's attitudes and behavior. Exposure to hate speech can lead to prejudice, dehumanization, and lack of empathy towards members of outgroups. However, the impact of exposure to hate speech on empathy and propensity to attribute mental states to others has never been directly tested empirically. In this fMRI study, we examine the effects of exposure to hate speech on neural mechanisms of empathy towards ingroup (Poles) versus outgroup members (Arabs). Thirty healthy young adults were randomly assigned to 2 groups: hateful and neutral. During the fMRI study, they were initially exposed to hateful or neutral comments and subsequently to narratives depicting Poles and Arabs in pain. Using whole-brain and region of interest analysis, we showed that exposure to derogatory language about migrants attenuates the brain response to someone else's pain in the right temporal parietal junction (rTPJ), irrespective of group membership (Poles or Arabs). Given that rTPJ is associated with processes relevant to perspective-taking, its reduced activity might be related to a decreased propensity to take the psychological perspective of others. This finding suggests that hate speech affects human functioning beyond intergroup relations.

    Abstract A true aneurysm of the celiac artery is a rare form of a visceral aneurysm, constituting ∼4% of visceral aneurysms. Mortality in ruptured cases is high; thus, early recognition and treatment are crucial. Recent guidelines suggest endovascular therapy; however, numerous complications are associated with endoluminal treatment. Open repair in select cases, using an individualized strategy fit for the patient's anatomy still provides excellent early and long-term results. Our patient was treated with open surgical resection and end-to-end anastomosis of the celiac and common hepatic arteries. A 43-month follow-up computed tomography angiogram revealed excellent hepatic artery patency and no pseudoaneurysm formation.

    Abstract This study evaluates the performance of a fully automated algorithm to detect active inflammation in the form of bone marrow edema (BME) in iliac and sacral bones, depending on the quality of the coronal oblique plane in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). The results were assessed based on the technical correctness of MRI examination of the sacroiliac joints (SIJs). A total of 173 patients with suspected axSpA were included in the study. In order to verify the correctness of the MRI, a deviation angle was measured on the slice acquired in the sagittal plane in the T2-weighted sequence. This angle was located between the line drawn between the posterior edges of S1 and S2 vertebrae and the line that marks the actual plane in which the slices were acquired in T1 and STIR sequences. All examinations were divided into quartiles according to the deviation angle measured in degrees as follows: 1st group [0; 2.2], 2nd group (2.2; 5.7], 3rd group (5.7; 10] and 4th group (10; 29.2]. Segmentations of the sacral and iliac bones were acquired manually and automatically using the fully automated algorithm on the T1 sequence. The Dice coefficient for automated bone segmentations with respect to reference manual segmentations was 0.9820 (95% CI [0.9804, 0.9835]). Examinations of BME lesions were assessed using the SPARCC scale (in 68 cases SPARCC > 0). Manual and automatic segmentations of the lesions were performed on STIR sequences and compared. The sensitivity of detection of BME ranged from 0.58 (group 1) to 0.83 (group 2) versus 0.76 (total), while the specificity was equal to 0.97 in each group. The study indicates that the performance of the algorithm is satisfactory regardless of the deviation angle.

    Abstract Purpose: The synovial plica of the elbow is a fold of synovial tissue, which is said to be a remnant of the embryonic septa of normal articular development and is located around the radiocapitellar joint. The objective of the present study was to provide morphometric properties of the synovial plica of the elbow and its relation to surrounding structures in asymptomatic patients.
    Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to establish the morphometric characteristics of the synovial plica of the elbow. The results of 216 consecutive patients, who for different reasons during the five year period of time underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of an elbow, were analyzed.
    Results: Plica was found in a total of 161 of 216 elbows (74.5%). The mean width of the plica was set to be 3.00 mm (SD: 1.39). The mean length of the plica was established at 2.91 mm (SD: 1.13). An analysis of sexual dimorphism was also included. Potential correlations were analyzed for each of the categories and age.
    Conclusions: The synovial plica of the elbow is a clinically relevant anatomical structure. Analyzing the morphometric parameters of the synovial plica is necessary to properly evaluate synovial plica syndrome, which can commonly be confused with other sources of lateral elbow pain such as tennis elbow, oppression of the radial and/or posterior interosseous nerve, or snapping of the triceps tendon. The authors suggest that the thickness of the plica may not be the golden diagnostic feature as there are no statistically significant differences in this parameter between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. A precise and accurate diagnosis of synovial fold syndrome and/or differentiation from other sources of lateral elbow pain must be performed, as the surgical treatment, even if performed properly, will be unsuccessful because of a misdiagnosed source of pain.
