Abstract This manuscript presents a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-based photonic beamformer for an RF phased array antenna transmitter, capable of simultaneously generating multiple beams using the same optical spectrum. In the proposed architecture, for each RF beam, a WDM signal comprising the modulated RF sidebands undergoes complex-valued filtering, while another WDM signal with the same channels, but carrying only optical carriers, goes through an optical frequency-shifting stage. The proposed architecture allows the same WDM channels to be reused for multiple RF beams. The detection of the frequency-shifted optical carrier and the filtered RF sideband of each WDM channel at the photodetector produces a frequency-converted, correctly weighted signal to be fed to each antenna element. The features described herein are analytically derived, numerically simulated, and experimentally demonstrated. Results showcase two independent beams being transmitted in different directions.

Abstract This study presents a comprehensive inter-comparison between two widely used rainfall datasets – the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) and the ERA-Interim reanalysis – and the recently released ERA-5, which will replace ERA-Interim as the main European Centre for Medium-Range Weather and Forecasting (ECMWF) reanalysis by 2020. Systematic and random error components were computed for the reanalysis datasets over the 1979–2018 period using GPCP as reference. The analysis was taken at monthly timescale at 2.5° spatial resolution, limited by GPCP. Despite its resolution limitations and complex algorithms, GPCP has been extensively used for model evaluation due to its global and long-term (over 40 years) coverage. Over most of the tropics, and over localized mid-latitude regions, ERA-5 showed lower bias and unbiased root-mean squared error (ubRMSE), as well as higher correlations, compared to ERA-Interim. Throughout the rest of the globe, these error metrics displayed similar values between both reanalysis, except over localized regions of the eastern tropical Pacific, the Andes and the Himalayas, where ERA-Interim outperformed ERA-5. A process-based analysis revealed that ERA-Interim tended to overestimate deep convection and moisture flux convergence over the tropical oceans and land, leading to excessive rainfall. Similarly, ERA-Interim showed significant rainfall underestimation over the mid-latitude oceans due to underestimation of deep convection and moisture flux convergence. Both cases were significantly improved in ERA-5, likely due to its improved parameterizations and higher resolution. Indeed, the differences in monthly rainfall between the two reanalysis were mainly due to improved dynamical (circulation) rather than thermodynamical (Clausius-Clapeyron) processes or surface evaporation changes. Nonetheless, the results also revealed improved representation of the moisture sink/source patterns over the tropical oceans in ERA-5. Finally, there were significant differences in the long-term rainfall trend patterns amongst the three datasets (with differences reaching ~30%/decade), that can extend even to the sign of the trend, with the most notorious differences occurring over tropical Africa. Furthermore, ERA-5 didn’t show improved representation of these trends. In fact, the trend of global-mean rainfall in ERA-Interim was closer to GPCP than ERA-5.

Abstract Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that presents with a variable clinical course and is typically associated with joint inflammation, together with cutaneous psoriasis. In recent decades, knowledge of the pathogenesis of psoriatic arthritis has advanced considerably and has allowed for development of new highly effective therapies, transforming the treatment landscape. Upadacitinib is a Janus kinase inhibitor (JAK) that is orally reversible with high selectivity for JAK1 and its signal transduction molecules. The results obtained in the phase III clinical trials (SELECT-PsA 1 and SELEC-PsA 2) demonstrated that upadacitinib was highly effective over placebo and non-inferior to adalimumab in several important domains of the disease. Improvements were observed in dactylitis, enthesitis and spondylitis as well as in physical function, pain, fatigue and overall quality of life. The safety profile of these results resembled that of adalimumab, apart from a slightly higher rate of herpes zoster infection, an increase of creatine kinase and an incidence of lymphopenia. However, none of these events was considered a serious adverse advent. Additionally, another analysis demonstrated that combining upadacitinib with methotrexate was associated with a similar efficacy to upadacitinib in monotherapy, both for patients that are naive to biologics treatment and for those previously treated with biologics. Therefore, upadacitinib is a new option for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis, presenting a series of beneficial characteristics. At this stage, it is important to collect long-term data to confirm the efficacy and safety profiles shown in clinical trials.

Abstract Background: Foetal heart rate (FHR) variability is considered a marker of foetal neurobehavioral development associated with infant self-regulation and thus may be an early precursor of the adverse impact of mother's prenatal depressive symptoms on infant self-regulation.
Objective: This study analysed the mediator role of FHR variability in the association between mother's prenatal depressive symptoms and infant self-regulation at three months.
Methods: The sample comprised 86 first-born infants and their mothers. Mothers reported on depressive symptoms at the first trimester of pregnancy and on depressive symptoms and infant self-regulation at three months postpartum. FHR variability was recorded during routine cardiotocography at the third trimester of pregnancy. A mediation model was tested, adjusting for mother's postnatal depressive symptoms.
Results: Higher levels of mother's prenatal depressive symptoms were associated with both lower FHR variability and lower infant self-regulation at three months. FHR variability was associated with infant self-regulation and mediated the association between mother's prenatal depressive symptoms and infant self-regulation at three months.
Conclusion: Findings suggested FHR variability as an early precursor of infant self-regulation that underlies the association between mother's prenatal depressive symptoms and infant self-regulation. Infants of mothers with higher levels of prenatal depressive symptoms could be at risk of self-regulation problems, partially due to their lower FHR variability.
