Abstract "Although the benefits of psychological consultation in the pediatric setting are well established, a gap often exists between the demand for these services and funding. We have embarked on our longstanding goal to develop a group-based intervention model for parents of premature infants, adapting our manual of individual trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy to help reduce feelings of parental isolation. This book describes a more global approach to psychological consultation in the NICU integrating interventions that begin prior to the infant's conception and extend well beyond the NICU hospitalization. Chapter 1 provides a context and review of the medical aspects of the NICU environment and the neurodevelopmental consequences of prematurity. In Chapter 2 reviews the common psychological reactions of mothers of premature infants, including specific risk factors associated with maternal psychological distress. It also discusses the relationship between parental posttraumatic

stress and infant outcomes as it relates to such issues as breastfeeding, maternal-infant interaction, attachment, and infant development. Chapter 3 describes the form and prevalence of symptoms of paternal psychological distress and outline a curriculum for a group-based intervention specifically designed to address fathers' concerns. Chapter 4 addresses developmental care interventions that overlap with interventions more narrowly focused on parental psychological distress. Chapters 5 and 6 describe our intervention model in both the individualand group therapy formats. Chapter 7 addresses vulnerable child syndrome, which is associated with adverse developmental outcomes in children as well as overutilization of health care resources. Application of the trauma model to the concept provides a framework to understand how parental behavior is altered in the context of trauma. Finally, Chapter 8 discusses how to implement a psychological intervention program in the NICU that includes sc

Abstract "The first comprehensive book on the subject, The Genetic Basis of Sleep and Sleep Disorders covers detailed reviews of the general principles of genetics and genetic techniques in the study of sleep and sleep disorders. The book contains sections on the genetics of circadian rhythms, of normal sleep and wake states and of sleep homeostasis. There are also sections discussing the role of genetics in the understanding of insomnias, hypersomnias including narcolepsy, parasomnias and sleep-related movement disorders. The final chapter highlights the use of gene therapy in sleep disorders. Written by genetic experts and sleep specialists from around the world, the book is up to date and geared specifically to the needs of both researchers and clinicians with an interest in sleep medicine. This book will be an invaluable resource for sleep specialists, neurologists, geneticists, psychiatrists and psychologists"--Provided by publisher

Abstract The genetics of indicator traits for resistance of Angora goats to gastrointestinal nematode parasite infections, and their relationships with productivity traits, were investigated on a commercial mixed-enterprise farm in the eastern North Island of New Zealand. Faecal egg counts (FEC), specific Immunoglobulin A (IgA) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody titres against carbohydrate larval antigen (CarLA) in saliva, live weight and fleece weights were recorded from 278 goats of 19-20 months of age, run as four separate mobs (breeding bucks, castrated males (wethers), or 2 groups of breeding does). Summary statistics showed the mobs differed significantly in liveweight, log

Abstract Caregiving relationships in the postnatal period are critical to an infant's development. Preterm infants and their parents face unique challenges in this regard, with infants experiencing separation from parents, uncomfortable procedures, and increased biologic vulnerability, and parents facing difficulties assuming caregiver roles and increased risk for psychological distress. To better understand the NICU parent-infant relationship, we conducted a review of the literature and identified 52 studies comparing observed maternal, infant, and dyadic interaction behavior in preterm dyads with full-term dyads. Eighteen of 40 studies on maternal behavior found less favorable behavior, including decreased sensitivity and more intrusiveness in mothers of preterm infants, seven studies found the opposite, four studies found mixed results, and 11 studies found no differences. Seventeen of 25 studies on infant behavior found less responsiveness in preterm infants, two studies found the opposite, and the remainder found no difference. Eighteen out of 14 studies on dyad-specific behavior reported less synchrony in preterm dyads and the remainder found no differences. We identify confounding factors that may explain variations in results, present an approach to interpret existing data by framing differences in maternal behavior as potentially adaptive in the context of prematurity, and suggest future areas for exploration.
