    Abstract Patients with psychocutaneous disease may present to multiple professionals to seek care. The multidimensional nature of the conditions can lead to specialists being fearful of how to properly manage patients. For example, a dermatologist may be unfamiliar and uncomfortable with acquiring sensitive psychosocial information and a psychiatrist may not know management protocols of wound care related to the patient’s condition. With the basic information provided in The Essentials of Psychodermatology, healthcare providers can increase their comfort and become less hesitant when making decisions in determining the proper treatment course and assessing the need for referral. This book provides vital information for a multidisciplinary audience to spark collaboration, increased awareness, and ultimately, improved patient-care and will find audience with: Healthcare providers from multiple diverse fields such as, but not limited to, family medicine, dermatology, and psychiatry; Physicians, physician’s assistants, nurses, psychologists, and students with exposure to patients with psychocutaneous conditions and/or a special interest in the field; and Professors, educators, and researchers with an interest in psychodermatology or interdisciplinary medicine.

    Abstract Psychodermatology, the multidisciplinary field that explores the intricate interplay between the mind and the skin, has gained increasing recognition over the past decade. However, several knowledge gaps and unmet needs persist in the field. The objective of this narrative review was to investigate the unmet needs in the field of psychodermatology as they pertain to medical training, treatment, research, and care access. PubMed was searched from inception through December 2023 to identify articles related to psychodermatology. Findings revealed several unmet needs within the field of psychodermatology. First, there is a need for further investigation into the pathophysiology that links psychological stress to cutaneous disease including the development of novel therapies targeting key neuropeptides. Second, the existing literature focuses primarily on the pharmacologic treatment of body dysmorphic disorder and body-focused repetitive behaviors, as well as delusional parasitosis, for which the first-line agents are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and atypical antipsychotics, respectively. However, additional research into the efficacy and safety of the remaining psychotropic medications and the treatment of other common psychocutaneous diseases is required. Finally, there exists a significant gap in knowledge amongst clinicians tasked with treating psychocutaneous diseases. Dermatologists report low rates of training in psychodermatology and discomfort with prescribing psychotropic medications. In conclusion, increasing resources for dermatologist education on psychotropic agent use, development of new drugs targeting stress-induced skin conditions, and research on the psychocutaneous applications of current medications may greatly improve the quality and access of psychodermatology care.

    Abstract This review synthesized evidence on the most up-to-date treatment outcomes in patients with delusional parasitosis and examined the impact of incorporating psychological interventions in conjunction with psychiatric treatment. The reporting of this review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched between 2013 and 2023. Nine studies were included in this review. Partial remission was observed across all cases, irrespective of the treatment approach employed. Complete remission was limited to only three studies. No correlation was observed between the incorporation of psychological intervention in conjunction with psychotropic medication and an enhanced remission outcome. The findings underscore the importance of psychotropic medication as a fundamental component in the treatment of delusional parasitosis. The results highlight that although first- and second-generation psychotropic medications are the mainstay treatment options, they nevertheless play a limited role because of the patients' steadfast delusions of infestations.

    Abstract Chronic skin diseases can substantially affect a patient's physical, psychologic, and social well-being. Physicians may play a critical role in identifying and managing the psychologic sequelae of the most common chronic skin conditions. Acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, alopecia areata, and hidradenitis suppurativa are chronic dermatologic diseases that put patients at high risk for symptoms of depression, anxiety, and decreased quality of life. Both general and disease-specific scales exist to assess the quality of life in patients with chronic skin disease, the most common being the Dermatology Life Quality Index. The general management approach to the patient with chronic skin disease should incorporate acknowledgment and validation of the patient's struggles; patient education on the potential effect of disease and prognosis; medical management of the dermatologic lesions; coaching on stress management; and psychotherapy. Psychotherapies include talk therapy (eg, cognitive behavioral therapy), arousal-reducing therapies (eg, meditation, relaxation), and behavioral therapies (eg, habit reversal therapy). Improved understanding, identification, and management of the psychiatric and psychologic aspects of the most common chronic skin conditions by dermatologists and other health care providers may positively affect patient outcomes.

    Abstract Background: COVID-19 may play a role in various immune-related dermatologic conditions. The relationship between COVID-19 and alopecia areata remains unclear.
    Objective: To review the existing literature for clinical studies and reports investigating the association between new-onset alopecia areata or the exacerbation of preexisting alopecia areata following infection with SARS-CoV-2.
    Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed using PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE databases from inception to October 2021. Included articles assessed alopecia areata following infection with SARS-CoV-2.
    Results: Of 402 total articles, 9 were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria. Six articles described case reports of 7 patients with new-onset alopecia areata following confirmed infection with SARS-CoV-2, and 3 articles reported on alopecia areata recurrence or exacerbation following SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with preexisting disease. Studies investigating the exacerbation or recurrence of alopecia areata following infection reported mixed findings.
    Limitations: A majority of the included studies were case reports. The heterogeneity of articles precluded data synthesis.
    Conclusion: Alopecia areata may be a dermatologic manifestation of COVID-19, with cases most often appearing 1 to 2 months following infection. Additional research is necessary to better elucidate the relationship and draw conclusions.
