Abstract Mountain glaciers are excellent indicators of climate change and have an important role in the terrestrial water cycle and food security in many parts of the world. Glaciers are the major water source of rivers and lakes in the Nyainqentanglha Mountains (NM) region, where the glacier area has the second largest extent on the Tibetan Plateau. The potential of the high spatial resolution ZiYuan-3 (ZY-3) Three-Line-Array (TLA) stereo images to retrieve glacier mass balance has not been sufficiently explored. In this study, we optimized the procedure to extract a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from ZY-3 TLA stereo images and estimated the geodetic mass balance of representative glaciers in the two typical areas of the NM using ZY-3 DEMs and the C-band Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM in three periods, i.e., 2000−2013, 2013−2017 and 2000−2017. The results provide detailed information towards better understanding of glacier change and specifically show that: (1) with our new stereo procedure, ZY-3 TLA data can significantly increase point cloud density and decrease invalid data on the glacier surface map to generate a high resolution (5 m) glacier mass balance map; (2) the glacier mass balance in both the Western Nyainqentanglha Mountains (WNM) and Eastern Nyainqentanglha Mountains (ENM) was negative in 2000−2017, and experienced faster mass loss in recent years (2013−2017) in the WNM. Overall, the glaciers in the western and eastern NM show different change patterns since they are influenced by different climate regimes; the glacier mass balances in WNM was −0.22 ± 0.23 m w.e. a −1 and −0.43 ± 0.06 m w.e. a −1 in 2000−2013 and 2013−2017, respectively, while in 2000−2017, it was −0.30 ± 0.19 m w.e. a −1 in the WNM and −0.56 ± 0.20 m w.e. a −1 in the ENM; (3) in the WNM, the glaciers experienced mass loss in 2000−2013 and 2013−2017 in the ablation zone, while in the accumulation zone mass increased in 2000−2013 and a large mass loss occurred in 2013−2017; as regards the ENM, the glacier mass balance was ...

Abstract Road damage is a great threat to the service life and safety of roads, and the early detection of pavement damage can facilitate maintenance and repair. Street view images serve as a new solution for the monitoring of pavement damage due to their wide coverage and regular updates. In this study, a road pavement damage dataset, the Street View Image Dataset for Automated Road Damage Detection (SVRDD), was developed using 8000 street view images acquired from Baidu Maps. Based on these images, over 20,000 damage instances were visually recognized and annotated. These instances were distributed in five administrative districts of Beijing City. Ten well-established object detection algorithms were trained and assessed using the SVRDD dataset. The results have demonstrated the performances of these algorithms in the detection of pavement damages. To the best of our knowledge, SVRDD is the first public dataset based on street view images for pavement damages detection. It can provide reliable data support for future development of deep learning algorithms based on street view images.

Abstract Vascular age-related diseases describe a group of age-related chronic diseases that result in a considerable healthcare burden to society. Vascular aging includes structural changes and dysfunctions of endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in blood vessels. Compared with conventional treatment for vascular age-related diseases, stem cell (SC) therapy elicits better anti-aging effects

Abstract Thermoset powder coatings exhibit distinctive characteristics such as remarkable hardness and exceptional resistance to corrosion. In contrast to conventional paints, powder coatings are environmentally friendly due to the absence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, their irreversible cross-linking structures limit their chain segment mobility, preventing polymers from autonomously repairing cracks. Dynamic cross-linking networks have garnered attention for their remarkable self-healing capabilities, facilitated by rapid internal bond exchange. Herein, we introduce an innovative method for synthesizing thermoset epoxy containing boronic ester moieties which could prolong the life of the powder coating. The epoxy resin system relies on the incorporation of two curing agents: one featuring small-molecule diamines with boronic bonds and the other a modified polyurethane prepolymer. A state of equilibrium in mechanical properties was achieved via precise manipulation of the proportions of these agents, with the epoxy composite exhibiting a fracture stress of 67.95 MPa while maintaining a stable glass transition temperature (Tg) of 51.39 °C. This imparts remarkable self-healing ability to the coating surface, capable of returning to its original state even after undergoing 1000 cycles of rubbing (using 1200-grit abrasive paper). Furthermore, the introduction of carbon nanotube nanoparticles enabled non-contact sequential self-healing. Subsequently, we introduce this method into powder coatings of different materials. Therefore, this work provides a strategy to develop functional interior decoration and ensure its potential for broad-ranging applications, such as aerospace, transportation, and other fields.

Abstract Road pavement damage affects driving comfort markedly, threatens driving safety, and may even cause traffic accidents. The traffic management department conventionally captures pavement damage information mainly using manual and vehicle-mounted equipment, which is not conducive to the detection of large-scale road pavement distress. Street-view images can provide full-view images of urban roads where the data is updated regularly by navigation map service companies, making it possible to rapidly detect pavement damage in urban areas. This paper presents a new pavement damage detection approach that is built upon an improved YOLOv5 network and street-view images. The proposed model can deal with a large-scale detection layer to improve the detection precision of large distress targets, achieving thus both cross-layer and cross-scale feature fusion by using the Generalized Feature Pyramid Network (Generalized-FPN) structure. The improved network also involves a diagonal Intersection over Union loss for regression calculation of the boundary box and builds the decoupled Head structure to achieve the decoupling detection of prediction and regression. As a result, the fusion of the weak feature information in feature layers is enhanced at different spatial scales, a more suitable method is achieved for pavement damage detection in the complex context of multi-scale street-view images, and the accuracy of the modified network is much improved in the detection of pavement distress from street-view imagery. Furthermore, We created a large image sample set for model training and testing, and a total of 156,304 street-view images, obtained from Fengtai District, Beijing, China was used for demonstrating the usefulness of the proposed network. The findings indicated that the proposed approach could effectively achieve pavement damage detection of urban roads from street-view images, with a precision average of 79.8% on the test samples. Moreover, the developed model was applied for pavement damage detection for all the ...

Abstract Purpose: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) versus surgery for operable early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (ES-NSCLC) remains highly debated. Herein, we used spatial proteomics to identify whether any molecular biomarker(s) associate with the efficacy of either modality, in efforts to optimize treatment selection between surgery and SBRT for this population.
Methods and materials: We evaluated biopsy tissue samples from 44 patients with ES-NSCLC treated with first-line SBRT (cohort 1) by GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiling (DSP) with a panel of 70 proteins in 5 spatial molecular compartments: tumor (panCK+), leukocyte (CD45+), lymphocyte (CD3+), macrophage (CD68+), and stroma (α-SMA+). To validate the findings in cohort 1, biopsy samples from 52 patients with ES-NSCLC who received SBRT (cohort 2) and 62 patients with ES-NSCLC who underwent surgery (cohort 3) were collected and analyzed by multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF).
Results: In cohort 1, higher CD44 expression in the lymphocyte compartment was associated with poorer recurrence-free survival (RFS) (DSP: P < .001; mIF: P < .001) and higher recurrence rate (DSP: P = .001; mIF: P = .004). mIF data from cohort 2 validated these findings (P < .05 for all). From cohort 3, higher lymphocyte CD44 predicted higher RFS after surgery (P = .003). Intermodality comparisons demonstrated that SBRT was associated with significantly higher RFS over surgery in CD44-low patients (P < .001), but surgery was superior to SBRT in CD44-high cases (P = .016).
Conclusions: Lymphocyte CD44 may not only be a predictor of SBRT efficacy in this population but also an important biomarker (pending validation by large prospective data) that could better sharpen selection for SBRT versus surgery in ES-NSCLC.
