Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Si Wei Jiang Huang Tang San (SWJHTS) is a traditional Tibetan medicine prescription for the treatment of urethritis, frequent urination, and urgency, composed of four traditional Chinese medicines: Curcumae longae rhizoma, Berberidis cortex, Tribuli fructus, and Phyllanthi fructus. However, whether SWJHTS exhibits hypoglycemic efficacy and its specific mechanism remain unclear.
Aim of the study: In this study, we aimed to investigate the anti-diabetic effects of SWJHTS and elucidate the underlying mechanism.
Materials and methods: HPLC-MS method was used to identify the key components of four kinds of traditional Chinese medicine (Curcumae longae rhizoma, Berberidis cortex., Tribuli fructus, and Phyllanthi fructus) which composed SWJHTS and determine their structure. Normal mice and 145 mg/kg STZ-induced type 1 diabetic mice were treated with three doses of SWJTHS by oral gavage. Body weight, 24h food and water intake, fasting blood glucose, glucose tolerance and other indicators were measured to evaluate the hypoglycemic effect of SWJHTS. OMIM, Genecards and other databases were used to collect targets of diabetes, and HPLC-MS results and TCMSP database information were used to collect drug component targets. Bioinformatics methods such as pathway enrichment analysis and molecular docking were used to predict the key targets of SWJHTS. The gene and protein expressions of HIF1α and ERK signaling pathways in HepG2 cells treated with SWJHTS were detected by RT-PCR and Western blot.
Results: A total of 181 components were identified, including curcumin, palmatine, and berberine, etc. The in vivo studies showed that SWJHTS could significantly lower fasting blood glucose levels and improve the symptoms of polydipsia, polyphagia, and polyuria in diabetic mice. Furthermore, we identified HIF1α as the potential key target of SWJHTS against diabetes utilizing network pharmacology approach and in silico molecular docking. Subsequently, we experimentally confirmed that SWJHTS could suppress the high glucose-induced upregulation of HIF1α expression, which mediated the glucose consumption in HepG2 cells. The ERK signaling pathway was further found to be activated by the SWJHTS as the upstream of HIF1α.
Conclusions: SWJHTS can improve glucose metabolism by targeting the ERK/HIF1α signaling pathway; hence might be a prospective anti-diabetic drug for diabetic patients as traditional Tibetan medicine.

Abstract Chinese Jiang-flavor Baijiu is the most widely consumed liquor. Jiang-flavor Daqu, a fermentation starter, is important sources of key flavors of Jiang-flavor Baijiu. Some microbes play significant roles in flavor formation of Daqu. In order to clarify the microbial population that promotes the formation of Daqu flavor, we use high throughput sequencing technology combined with headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to investigate microbial population and volatile compounds in Jiang-flavor Daqu. In addition, the dynamic changes of physicochemical factors and enzyme activities in Jiang-flavor Daqu were investigated. Correlations between microbial population, volatile compounds, physicochemical factors, and enzyme activities of Jiang-flavor Daqu were disclosed by redundancy analysis and Spearman correlation analysis. A total of 66 volatile compounds were identified and 14 primary microorganisms were selected. Results showed that high temperature environment could promote the formation of acids, aldehydes and ketones, phenols, furans by affecting the growth of Monascus, Trichomonascus, Cutaneotrichosporon, Wallemia, Millerozyma, Nigrospora, Cladosporium, Bacillus, and Pediococcus in the early fermentation stage. While high nitrogen environment was more suitable for the growth of Virgibacillus and Kroppenstedtia, who could promote the formation of pyrazines in the late fermentation stage. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This study has provided a scientific basis for the directed regulation of Daqu fermentation through physicochemical factors, developed scientific basis for artificially constructing Daqu microbial population and obtaining an easy-to-operate, reproducible fermentation system for Daqu production.

Abstract In this paper, the interaction between the species Population were analyzed based on the data of major nekton species in the south coastal waters of Cangnan in spring and autumn 2014. A series of methods including niche breadth, niche overlap, χ2 - test and association coefficient (AC) based on a 2x2 contingency table were used. The results showed that the major nekton species in the south coastal waters of Cangnan were classified into three groups, i.e. wide niche breadth species, moderate niche breadth species and narrow niche breadth species based on the niche breadth values. The wide niche breadth species of nekton were Harpodon nehereus, Portunus trituberculatus, mantis shrimp and other 2 species. The moderate niche breadth species of nekton were Collichthys lucidus, Parapenaeopsis hardwickii, Parapenaeopsis tenella and other 5 species. While the species with narrow niche breadths were Charybdis japonica, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, Palaemon gravieri and other 7 species. There were great differences in the niche overlap values among the major nekton populations, with the maximum value of 0.93 and the minimum of 0, which indicated that resource utilization competition in some nekton might exist. The results of variance ratio analysis for major nekton in the south coastal waters of Cangnan showed that they were significantly positively correlated. χ2 - test results showed that there were significantly interspecific association for 78 species pairs (χ2≥3.841), among which more association coefficients (AC) of species pairs are positive.

Abstract The samples of surface soil, deep soil, and vegetables were collected from the liver cancer's high- and low incidence areas in Zhujiang River Delta to study the relationships between soil Mn forms and vegetables' Mn enrichment. The results showed that the soil Mn in study area was mainly derived from parent materials, and rarely come from human activities. The average soil Mn content in liver cancer's high incidence area was 577.65 mg x kg(-1), being significantly lower than that of liver cancer's low incidence area (718.04 mg x kg(-1)) and whole country (710 mg x kg(-1)). The Mn forms in high incidence area were mainly of residual Mn and Fe-Mn oxide, and less of water soluble Mn and exchangeable Mn, with the sum of the latter two's distribution coefficients being not higher than 4%. In low incidence area, the distribution pattern of soil Mn forms was similar to that in high incidence area, but the absolute contents of the Mn forms were significantly higher. Soil total Mn and soil pH had significant effects on soil Mn forms. There existed significant positive correlations between soil total Mn and the Mn forms of Fe-Mn bound, humic acid bound, carbonate bound, and residual, and negative correlations between soil pH and soil water soluble and organic bound Mn forms. Among the test five kinds of vegetables, Youmai lettuce and Chinese cabbage in liver cancer' s high incidence area had a significantly lower Mn content than in low incidence area, while the other three had less difference. The Mn enrichment in test vegetables was positively correlated with to the content of soil available Mn (sum of water soluble Mn and exchangeable Mn), but had no correlations with the contents of soil total Mn and other Mn forms.

Abstract Pathway-dependent self-assembly, in which a single building block forms two or more types of self-assembled nanostructures, is an important topic due to its mimic to the complexity in biology and manipulation of diverse supramolecular materials. Here, we report a pathway-dependent self-assembly using chiral glutamide derivatives (L or D-PAG), which form chiral nanotwist and nanotube through a cooperative slow cooling and an isodesmic fast cooling process, respectively. Furthermore, pathway-dependent self-assembly can be harnessed to control over the supramolecular co-assembly of PAG with a luminophore β-DCS or a photopolymerizable PCDA. Fast cooling leads to the co-assembled PAG/β-DCS nanotube exhibiting green circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), while slow cooling to nanofiber with blue CPL. Additionally, fast cooling process promotes the photopolymerization of PCDA into a red chiral polymer, whereas slow cooling inhibits the polymerization. This work not only demonstrates the pathway-dependent control over structural characteristics but also highlights the diverse functions emerged from the different assemblies.
