Abstract Objective: To evaluate the influence of the factors associated with overall functioning in patients with schizophrenia who attended the outpatient clinic of the Hospital Nacional de la Policía [National Police Hospital] "Luis Nicasio Saenz" in 2018-2019.
Methodology: Non-experimental quantitative study of a descriptive cross-sectional correlational type. Convenience sampling was carried out, and consisted of 53 patients with schizophrenia. Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) was used to assess overall functioning, the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP) for cognitive functioning, and a data collection sheet with sociodemographic data and a history of the disease.
Results: It was found that 34 (62.2%) patients were male; 52 (98.1%), single; 39, (73.6%) without a current job. We found worse overall functioning in patients with a lower educational level (P = .005) and without a current job (P = .004). The total FAST was correlated with the time of the disease (ρ = 0.334, P < .05), the number of previous psychotic episodes (ρ = 0.354, P < .01), the total SCIP score (ρ = 0.542, P < .01) and their working memory dimension (VMT) (ρ = -0.523, P < .05). In the multiple linear regression model, it was found that the variables that most influenced the FAST were the total SCIP score (Beta = -0.528) and the number of previous psychotic episodes (Beta = 0.278).
Conclusion: The associated factors that most influence overall functioning in this sample of Peruvian patients with schizophrenia are cognitive functioning and the number of previous psychotic episodes.

Abstract Since December 2019, 414,179 cases of people with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been reported. As a result of the rapid increase in confirmed cases and deaths, population and health personnel, have experienced psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, and stress. Although scientific information on COVID-19 is constantly increasing, it mainly focuses on genetic, epidemiological aspects, and public health measures, leaving aside possible effects on mental health. In order to summarize the current evidence, we present a narrative review of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. So far, the presence of anxiety, depression, and stress has been reported mostly in general population. Nonetheless, mental health issues have also been reported in health care workers, especially among female professionals, nurses, and those who work directly with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19. In efforts to reduce the spread of the disease, attention should be paid to the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues. We believe that addressing them adequately will empower Peru to contain and eradicate COVID-19.

Abstract Introduction: Annual suicide rates are increasingly notably worldwide due to various accompanying risk factors. The objective of this study is to know the suicide mortality rates and their distribution between the years 2017 and 2019.
Methods: The national death registries of the Ministry of Health of Peru were analysed, calculating the regional death rates from suicides adjusted for age and gender using the standardisation recommended by the World Health Organization.
Results: A total of 1666 cases of suicide were identified (69.3% males); the age group with the highest frequency was that of 20-29 years (27.8%); the mean age at suicide was higher in males (37.49±18.96 vs. 27.86±15.42; P<.001). Hanging was the most common suicide method among both males (58.87%) and females (48.14%). For males, hanging was followed by poisoning (22.6%) and firearms (4.59%); for females, by poisoning (38.75%) and firearms (0.59%). The suicide rate increased from 2017 (1.44/100,000 inhabitants) to 2019 (1.95). The highest rates were identified in the departments of Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna.
Conclusions: In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of suicide cases and the rates by department, with the highest number of cases reported in males. Males tend to use more violent suicide methods. The risk factors in the vulnerable populations that were identified in this study need to be known.

Abstract The current COVID-19 pandemic affects the mental health of medical staff. Our objective was to evaluate the factors that are associated with the distress of physicians in two general hospitals in Lima, Peru. A cross-sectional correlational survey study was carried out. Physicians completed The Impact of Event Scale-Revised-22 (IES-R), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). A total of 310 physicians completed the survey, 36.5% of whom reported distress symptoms. Higher levels of distress were reached by women, by those with a prior psychiatric diagnosis, by those who considered that the hospital does not provide adequate personal protective equipment, and by those who perceived stigma from family members. Multiple regression analysis showed that there is a correlation between distress symptoms and anxiety symptoms, (B = 0.509), depressive symptoms (B = 0.305), the total hours/week worked in the Emergency Department (

Abstract Background: Anxiety disorders are among the main mental health problems worldwide and are considered one of the most disabling conditions. Therefore, it is essential to have measurement tools that can be used to screen for anxiety symptoms in the general population and thus identify potential cases of people with anxiety symptoms and provide them with timely care. Our aim was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the General Anxiety Disorder-7 scale (GAD-7) in the Peruvian population.
Method: Our study was a cross-sectional study. The sample included people aged 12 to 65 years in Peru. Confirmatory factor analysis, analysis of measurement invariance, convergent validity with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and internal consistency analysis were performed.
Results: In total, 4431 participants were included. The one-factor model showed the best fit (CFI = 0.994; TLI = 0.991; RMSEA = 0.068; WRMR = 1.567). The GAD-7 score showed measurement invariance between men and women and between age groups (adults vs. adolescents) (ΔCFI < 0.01). The internal consistency of the one-factor model was satisfactory (ω = 0.90, α = 0.93). The relationship between depressive symptoms (PHQ-9) and anxiety symptoms (GAD-7) presented a moderate correlation (r = 0.77).
Conclusions: Our study concluded that the GAD-7 score shows evidence of validity and reliability for the one-factor model. Furthermore, because the GAD-7 score is invariant, comparisons can be made between groups (i.e., by sex and age group). Finally, we recommend the use of the GAD-7 for the general population in the Peruvian context.

Abstract Introduction: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare and potentially fatal drug adverse reaction. There are still few studies of this entity in the child-adolescent population.
Objectives: Describe the clinical, laboratory and therapeutic characteristics of children and adolescent patients with NMS. Analyse the grouping of symptoms present in NMS in the same population.
Material and methods: A MEDLINE/PubMed search of all reported cases of NMS from January 2000 to November 2018 was performed and demographic, clinical, laboratory and therapeutic variables were identified. A factorial analysis of the symptoms was performed.
Results: 57 patients (42 males and 15 females) were included, (mean age 13.65 ± 3.89 years). The onset of NMS occurred at 11.25 ± 20.27 days with typical antipsychotics and at 13.69 ± 22.43 days with atypical antipsychotics. The most common symptoms were muscle stiffness (84.2%), autonomic instability (84.2%) and fever (78.9). The most common laboratory findings were CPK elevation and leucocytosis (42.1%). The most used treatment was benzodiazepines (28.1%). In the exploratory factorial analysis of the symptoms we found 3 factors: 1) "Catatonic" with mutism (0.912), negativism (0.825) and waxy flexibility (0.522); 2) "Extrapyramidal" with altered gait (0.860), involuntary abnormal movements (0.605), muscle stiffness (0.534) and sialorrhoea (0.430); and 3) "Autonomic instability" with fever (0.798), impaired consciousness (0.795) and autonomic instability (0.387).
Conclusions: NMS in children and adolescents could be of 3 types: catatonic, extrapyramidal and autonomic unstable.
