Abstract It has been proven that surgery is more effective than non-surgical treatment in obese patients. However, this approach has several disadvantages, especially long-term weight loss. Weight loss failures can be broadly classified into two categories; insufficient weight loss (poor responder) and weight regain. However, a unified definition has not been established yet for each category, and there is no clear standard for the post-surgery time point to be used to assess weight loss failure. In addition, analyzing factors that contribute to weight loss failure will lead to strategies for reducing it. Therefore, many researchers have been interested in this subject and have published conflicting results. This review presents a definition for and describes the mechanisms and predictors of weight loss failure after bariatric surgery.

Abstract Prostate cancer accounts for 14% of male cancer-related fatalities in the UK. Given the challenges associated with hormone-based therapies in the context of androgen-independent prostate cancer, there is an imperative need for research into anticancer drugs. N0821, a peptide belonging to the Trp-Arg dense region and derived from the homologous region of various bee species, shows substantial potential for an anticancer effect. Both MTT assays and 3D spheroid assays were conducted to substantiate its antiproliferation potential and strongly indicated the antiproliferation effect of N0820 (WWWWRWWRKI) and N0821 (YWWWWRWWRKI). Notably, the mechanism underlying this effect is related to the downregulation of CCNA2 and the upregulation of CCNE1. Cell cycle arrest results from the reduction of CCNA2 in the S/G2 phase, leading to the accumulation of CCNE1. Our peptides were predicted to make an α-helix structure. This can act as an ion channel in the cell membrane. Therefore, we analyzed genes implicated in the influx of calcium ions into the mitochondria. Trp-Arg dense-region peptides are known for their antibacterial properties in targeting cell membranes, making the development of resistance less likely. Hence, further research in this area is essential and promising.

Abstract Amniotic fluid mesenchymal stem cells (AF-MSCs), which can be obtained from fetal tissue, reportedly have self-renewal capacity and multi-lineage differentiation potential. The aim of this study was to identify the biological characteristics of AF-MSCs and evaluate their stability and safety in long-term culture. To confirm the biological characteristics of AF-MSCs, morphology, proliferation capacity, karyotype, differentiation capacity, gene expression level, and immunophenotype were analyzed after isolating AF-MSCs from equine amniotic fluid. AF-MSCs were differentiated into adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteocytes. Immunophenotype analyses revealed expression levels of ≥95% and ≤ 2% of cells for a positive and negative marker, respectively. Analysis of the MSCs relative gene expression levels of AF-MSCs was approximately at least twice that of the control. The endotoxin level was measured to verify the safety of AF-MSCs and was found to be less than the standard value of 0.5 EU/ml. AF-MSCs were cultured for a long time without any evidence of abnormalities in morphology, proliferation ability, and karyotype. These results suggest that amniotic fluid is a competent source for acquiring equine MSCs and that it is valuable as a cell therapy due to its high stability.

Abstract Several studies have examined the effect of virtual reality (VR) education. However, they are mostly systematic reviews or meta-analyses focusing on doctors and residents; they fail to consider VR medical education for a broader range of learners. We evaluated the effectiveness of VR education for health professionals and identified the essential features of education. Randomized controlled trials published from January 2000 to April 2020 were identified from PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library (n = 299). The randomized studies' bias risk was evaluated using Cochrane's Risk of Bias tool. Meta- and subgroup-analyses were conducted using Review Manager 5.4.1. The overall effect was measured using Hedges' g and determined using Z-statistics (
