Abstract The advancement of digital technologies particularly in the domain of mobile health (mHealth) holds great promise in the promotion of health behavior. However, keeping users engaged remains a central challenge. This paper proposes a novel approach to address this issue by supplementing existing and future mHealth applications with an engagement wrapper - a collection of engagement strategies integrated into a single, coherent model. The engagement wrapper is operationalized within the format of an ambient display on the lock screen of mobile devices.

Abstract A search for the decays B_{s}^{0}→e^{+}e^{-} and B^{0}→e^{+}e^{-} is performed using data collected with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2, and 2  fb^{-1}, respectively. No signal is observed. Assuming no contribution from B^{0}→e^{+}e^{-} decays, an upper limit on the branching fraction B(B_{s}^{0}→e^{+}e^{-})<9.4(11.2)×10^{-9} is obtained at 90(95)% confidence level. If no B_{s}^{0}→e^{+}e^{-} contribution is assumed, a limit of B(B^{0}→e^{+}e^{-})<2.5(3.0)×10^{-9} is determined at 90(95)% confidence level. These upper limits are more than one order of magnitude lower than the previous values.

Abstract Autochthonous hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is increasingly reported in industrialized countries and is mostly associated with zoonotic HEV genotype 3 (HEV-3). In this study, we examined the molecular epidemiology of 63 human clinical HEV-3 isolates in Canada between 2014 and 2022. Fifty-five samples were IgM positive, 45 samples were IgG positive and 44 were IgM and IgG positive. The majority of the isolates belong to the subtypes 3a, 3b, and 3j, with high sequence homology to Canadian swine and pork isolates. There were a few isolates that clustered with subtypes 3c, 3e, 3f, 3h, and 3g, and an isolate from chronic infection with a rabbit strain (3ra). Previous studies have demonstrated that the isolates from pork products and swine from Canada belong to subtypes 3a and 3b, therefore, domestic swine HEV is likely responsible for the majority of clinical HEV cases in Canada and further support the hypothesis that swine serve as the main reservoirs for HEV-3 infections. Understanding the associated risk of zoonotic HEV infection requires the establishment of sustainable surveillance strategies at the interface between humans, animals, and the environment within a One-Health framework.

Abstract Design: Study participants were divided equally into three groups being exclusive vapers (never smokers), current exclusive smokers and non-users. Brush biopsy samples of oral epithelial cells were collected. DNA damage quantification was assessed using LA-QPCR, and analysis interrogated a 12.2 kb region of the DNA polymerase beta gene (POLB). An additional gene, hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase 1 (HPRT), was also interrogated for validity. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure plasma cotinine levels. Breath monitoring was measured using Bedfont Micro Smokerlyzer in order to quantify exhaled CO and %COHb levels in participants.
Case selection: 72 subjects, consisting of both males and females of diverse ages, races and ethnicities, were recruited. Comprehensive interviews alongside biochemical studies were used to verify smoking and vaping status. Participants classified as vapers reported a minimum use of e-cigarettes three times weekly for 6 months, with no use of cigarettes or tobacco products in their lifetime. Smokers reported cigarette consumption for a minimum of three times weekly for at least 12 months, less than five vaping sessions ever and no use of other tobacco products in the previous 6 months. Participants reporting no or less than five uses of e-cigarettes or tobacco products were classified as non-users. Former smokers, vapers and those who were dual or poly users of e-cigarettes, cigarettes or tobacco products were excluded.
Data analysis: R environment for statistical computing (RStudio), was used for data analysis. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to evaluate the distribution of data. Student's t test allowed comparison of all variables between two groups (vapers and nonusers, smokers and nonusers, or vapers and smokers), specifically DNA damage levels. A one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by a post hoc Tukey HSD test allowed comparison of damage in three or more groups (heavy vapers, light vapers, and nonusers, as well as heavy smokers, light smokers, and nonusers). DNA damage was also analysed in this manner when assessing e-cigarette device type, liquid type or in non-users. Pearson correlation coefficient analysis allowed examination of relationships between different variables.
Results: Mean levels of DNA damage in the POLB gene was 2.6-fold higher in vapers (p = 0.005) and 2.2-fold higher in smokers (p = 0.020), when compared to non-users. On comparing POLB gene DNA damage in vapers versus smokers, the results were not statistically significant (p = 0.522). Comparing DNA damage in the HPRT gene, levels were much higher in vapers (p = 0.029) and smokers (p = 0.033) versus non-users. Similarly to the POLB gene, DNA damage levels in the HPRT gene in vapers versus smokers were not statistically significant (p = 0.578). When assessing volume of e-cigarette liquid or smoking pack years, levels of DNA damage in increased in the POLB gene in a dose-dependent manner between 'light' and 'heavy' users versus non-users (F = 4.571, p = 0.0156 | Tukey's HSD p = 0.0195 in vapers, F = 4.368, p = 0.0185 | Tukey's HSD p = 0.0135 in smokers). Vaping device type was investigated showing mean level of DNA damage in the oral cells of pod device users was 3.3-fold higher compared to non-users (F = 3.886, p = 0.0152 | Tukey's HSD p = 0.0216). This was followed by a 2.6-fold increase in oral cell DNA damage in Mod device users, and a 1.6-fold increase in multiple device users. Levels of DNA damage was higher in those who consume sweet-flavoured e-liquid (F = 3.238, p = 0.0146 | Tukey's HSD p < 0.05), followed by vapers of multiple flavours, mint or menthol and tobacco, and fruit flavours. No correlation was found between DNA damage of oral cells and cumulative nicotine consumption in vapers (r = 0.3189, p = 0.1288). Plasma cotinine levels, a validated maker of tobacco in cigarettes and e-cigarettes, were not significantly different between vapers and smokers (p = 0.607), but were significantly higher compared to non-users (p < 0.0001). Whist compared to non-users, vapers had similar levels of CO and %COHb, smokers showed significantly increased levels (p = 0.0005 and p = 0.0002, respectively).
Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, there is evidence to support a dose-dependent formation of DNA damage in oral cells in those vapers who have never smoked cigarettes, and in those exclusive cigarette smokers. Additionally, e-cigarette device type and flavour, may also determine levels of DNA damage.

Abstract Smoking cessation is the most effective intervention to reduce mortality in patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), with 'e-cigarettes' becoming an increasingly used intervention to achieve smoking cessation. The current review aims to summarise the current evidence base for their efficacy and safety in the ASCVD cohort. A search of the PUBMED and MEDLINE databases using the terms 'e-cigarette', 'cessation', 'safety' and 'efficacy' since 2012 yielded 706 results. Both observational and experimental studies were included, while those with an unavailable full text, non-English or duplicates were excluded, yielding 78 relevant articles, with 13 subsequent additional articles included from a search of reference lists, for a total of 91 included papers. E-cigarette vapour contains many known pro-atherosclerotic substances and has been demonstrated to potentiate traditional atherosclerotic mechanisms. While e-cigarettes may be more effective in promoting smoking cessation in the general population over a medium term (>6 months), when compared with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), few studies specifically examined those with ASCVD, despite the latter having a higher baseline quit rate (52% vs 2%). Most studies compare e-cigarettes with NRT alone and do not include pharmacotherapy, which may be more effective in the ASCVD cohort. The single randomised controlled trial addressing the research question favoured traditional methods. Those that successfully quit smoking using e-cigarettes are more likely to continue to use the intervention at 1 year (90% vs 9%). Conflicting advice exists regarding the utilisation of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. E-cigarettes may be inferior to standard care for smoking cessation in those with ASCVD, and their use is likely to promote the key drivers of the atherosclerotic process already active in this cohort.

Abstract Carcinogen and toxicant uptake by e-cigarette users have not been fully evaluated. In the study reported here, we recruited 30 e-cigarette users, 63 nonsmokers, and 33 cigarette smokers who gave monthly urine samples over a period of 4-6 months. Their product use status was confirmed by measurements of exhaled CO, urinary total nicotine equivalents, cyanoethyl mercapturic acid (CEMA), and total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol. Urinary biomarkers of exposure to the carcinogens acrolein (3-hydroxypropyl mercapturic acid, 3-HPMA), benzene (

Abstract The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic challenges healthcare systems worldwide. Within inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) the vulnerable subgroup of intoxication-type IMDs such as organic acidurias (OA) and urea cycle disorders (UCD) show risk for infection-induced morbidity and mortality. This study (observation period February 2020 to December 2021) evaluates impact on medical health care as well as disease course and outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infections in patients with intoxication-type IMDs managed by participants of the European Registry and Network for intoxication type metabolic diseases Consortium (E-IMD). Survey's respondents managing 792 patients (n = 479 pediatric; n = 313 adult) with intoxication-type IMDs (n = 454 OA; n = 338 UCD) in 14 countries reported on 59 (OA: n = 36; UCD: n = 23), SARS-CoV-2 infections (7.4%). Medical services were increasingly requested (95%), mostly alleviated by remote technologies (86%). Problems with medical supply were scarce (5%). Regular follow-up visits were reduced in 41% (range 10%-50%). Most infected individuals (49/59; 83%) showed mild clinical symptoms, while 10 patients (17%; n = 6 OA including four transplanted MMA patients; n = 4 UCD) were hospitalized (metabolic decompensation in 30%). ICU treatment was not reported. Hospitalization rate did not differ for diagnosis or age group (p = 0.778). Survival rate was 100%. Full recovery was reported for 100% in outpatient care and 90% of hospitalized individuals. SARS-CoV-2 impacts health care of individuals with intoxication-type IMDs worldwide. Most infected individuals, however, showed mild symptoms and did not require hospitalization. SARS-CoV-2-induced metabolic decompensations were usually mild without increased risk for ICU treatment. Overall prognosis of infected individuals is very promising and IMD-specific or COVID-19-related complications have not been observed.
