    Abstract Sites 1147 (18°50.11'N, 116°33.28'E; water depth = 3246 m) and 1148 (18°50.17'N, 116°33.94'E; water depth = 3294 m) are located on the lowermost continental slope off southern China near the continent/ocean crust boundary of the South China Sea Basin. Site 1147 is located upslope ~0.45 nmi west of Site 1148. Three advanced piston corer holes at Site 1147 and two extended core barrel holes at Site 1148 were cored and combined into a composite (spliced) stratigraphic section, which provided a relatively continuous profile for the lower Oligocene to Holocene (Wang, Prell, Blum, et al., 2000, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.184.2000; Jian, et al., 2001, doi:10.1007/BF02907088) for studying stratigraphy and paleoceanography. A total of 1047 planktonic foraminifers stable isotope measurements were performed on 975 samples covering the upper 409.58 meters composite depth (mcd) at ~42-cm intervals (Tables T1, T2), and a total of 1864 benthic foraminifers measurements were performed on 1650 samples in the upper 837.11 mcd at ~51-cm intervals (Tables T3, T4). We significantly improved the time resolution of the benthic stable isotope record in the upper 476.68 mcd by reducing the average sample spacing to ~29 cm. This translates into an average sampling resolution of ~16 k.y. for the Miocene sequence and ~8 k.y. for the Pliocene-Holocene interval, assuming a change in sedimentation rates from ~1.8 to ~3.5 cm/k.y., as suggested by shipboard stratigraphy. These data sets provide the basis for upcoming studies to establish an oxygen isotope stratigraphy and examine the Neogene evolution of deep and surface water signatures (temperature, salinity, and nutrients) in the South China Sea.

    Abstract Abstract Commercial stainless steel has attracted increasing interest due to their rich content in transition metal elements and corrosion resistance properties. In this work, we design a facile and rapid route to in-situ fabricate the Cr doped FeNi layered double hydroxides nanosheets (LDHs) on modified stainless steel (Cr–FeNi LDH @ ESS) under ambient condition.The ultra small scaled 2D structure only around 20 nm diameter and metal ions with multivalent oxidation state were observed on the in situ fabricated LDHs, which provides high active area and active sites and thus promote excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Cr–FeNi LDH @ESS electrocatalysts exhibit an over potential of 280 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and achieves a Tafel slope of 44 mV dec−1 for OER in the 1.0 M KOH aqueous solution. We anticipate that the operating strategy of our system may promote the development of commercial non-precious productions as the efficient electrocatalysts for energy storage and conversion.

    Abstract Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is becoming the leading cause of chronic kidney disease, especially in the industrialized world. Despite mounting evidence has demonstrated that immunity and inflammation are highly involved in the pathogenesis and progression of DKD, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Substantial molecules, signaling pathways, and cell types participate in DKD inflammation, by integrating into a complex regulatory network. Most of the studies have focused on individual components, without presenting their importance in the global or system-based processes, which largely hinders clinical translation. Besides, conventional technologies failed to monitor the different behaviors of resident renal cells and immune cells, making it difficult to understand their contributions to inflammation in DKD. Recently, the advancement of omics technologies including genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics has revolutionized biomedical research, which allows an unbiased global analysis of changes in DNA, RNA, proteins, and metabolites in disease settings, even at single-cell and spatial resolutions. They help us to identify critical regulators of inflammation processes and provide an overview of cell heterogeneity in DKD. This review aims to summarize the application of multiple omics in the field of DKD and emphasize the latest evidence on the interplay of inflammation and DKD revealed by these technologies, which will provide new insights into the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of DKD and lead to the development of novel therapeutic approaches and diagnostic biomarkers.

    Abstract Objective: Osteoporosis is a common clinical bone disease that occurs most frequently in middle-aged and elderly people. Various traditional herbal medicine formulations have shown significant benefits in models of osteoporosis. In this study, we aim to investigate the osteogenic efficacy of naringin (NRG) in the osteoporotic state.
    Design: We treated Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) with various concentrations of NRG for 3 and 7 days. BMSC proliferation was measured by the MTT assay. The effect of NRG on the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs was detected by ALP and alizarin red staining. The effect of NRG on the BMP2/Runx2/Osterix signaling pathway was analyzed by using real-time PCR. The effect of NRG on the oestrogen receptor was measured by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
    Results: NRG promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Moreover, it also activated the BMP2/Runx2/Osterix signaling pathway. When NRG sustained-release nanoparticles were added

    Abstract This work investigated the effect of oscillation-assisted hydrothermal process on extraction of caffeic acid and ferulic acid from sorghum straws. The results showed that the oscillation-assisted hydrothermal process efficiently improved extraction of caffeic acid and ferulic acid. The oscillation-assisted hydrothermal process resulted in the extraction rates of 1275.48 and 1822.64 mg/L.h for caffeic acid and ferulic acid, respectively. Moreover, the oscillation-assisted hydrothermal process exerted destructive effects on hemicellulose, lignin and the amorphous regions of cellulose, contributing to the release of caffeic acid and ferulic acid in pretreated sorghum straws. The scavenging activities for hydroxyl, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radicals of the caffeic acid and ferulic acid extracts obtained by the oscillation-assisted hydrothermal process were determined to be 83.69 %, 84.17 % and 88.45 %, respectively.

    Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of blindness in the elderly worldwide. Multiple studies have shown that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of AMD. Isorhamnetin (Isor) is a flavonoid compound that inhibits EMT in tumor cells. However, whether it can also attenuate EMT in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is unknown. Therefore, our study was designed to probe the possible impact of Isor on EMT process in both mouse retina and ARPE-19 cells. C57BL/6 mice were utilized to establish a dry AMD model. Isor and LCZ (a mixture of luteine/β-carotene/zinc gluconate) were administered orally for 3 months. The effects of Isor on the retina were evaluated using fundus autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography, and transmission electron microscopy. Transwell and wound healing assay were employed to assess ARPE-19 cell migration. Western blotting and immunofluorescence were used to measure the protein expressions associated with EMT, Nrf2 and AKT/GSK-3β pathway. The findings indicated that Isor alleviated dry AMD-like pathological changes in vehicle mice retina, inhibited the migration of Ox-LDL-treated ARPE-19 cells, and repressed the EMT processes in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, Isor activated Nrf2 pathway and deactivated AKT/GSK-3β pathway in both vehicle mice and ARPE-19 cells. Interestingly, when Nrf2 siRNA was transfected into ARPE-19 cells, the inhibitory effect of Isor on EMT and AKT/GSK-3β pathway was attenuated. These results suggested that Isor inhibited EMT processes via Nrf2-dependent AKT/GSK-3β pathway and is a promising candidate for dry AMD treatment.

    Abstract Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is a prevalent form of oral malignancy, with increasing incidence. Unfortunately, the 5-year survival rate for patients has not exceeded 50%. Studies have shown that sex-determining region Y box 9 (SOX9) correlates with malignancy and tumor stemness in a variety of tumors. To investigate the role of SOX9 in TSCC stemness, we analyzed its influence on various aspects of tumor biology, including cell proliferation, migration, invasion, sphere and clone formation, and drug resistance in TSCC. Our data suggest a close association between SOX9 expression and both the stemness phenotype and drug resistance in TSCC. Immunohistochemical experiments revealed a progressive increase of SOX9 expression in normal oral mucosa, paracancerous tissues, and tongue squamous carcinoma tissues. Furthermore, the expression of SOX9 was closely linked to the TNM stage, but not to lymph node metastasis or tumor diameter. SOX9 is a crucial gene in TSCC responsible for promoting the stemness function of cancer stem cells. Developing drugs that target SOX9 is extremely important in clinical settings.

    Abstract Background: Several lines of evidence point to an interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors in the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD). This study is aimed to investigate the pathogenesis of MDD by identifying key biomarkers, associated immune infiltration using bioinformatic analysis and human postmortem sample.
    Methods: The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database of GSE98793 was adopted to identify hub genes linked to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related genes (ERGs) in MDD. Another GEO database of GSE76826 was employed to validate the novel target associated with ERGs and immune infiltration in MDD. Moreover, human postmortem sample from MDD patients was utilized to confirm the differential expression analysis of hub genes.
    Results: We discovered 12 ER stress-related differentially expressed genes (ERDEGs). A LASSO Cox regression analysis helped construct a diagnostic model for these ERDEGs, incorporating immune infiltration analysis revealed that three hub genes (ERLIN1, SEC61B, and USP13) show the significant and consistent expression differences between the two groups. Western blot analysis of postmortem brain samples indicated notably higher expression levels of ERLIN1 and SEC61B in the MDD group, with USP13 also tending to increase compared to control group.
    Limitations: The utilization of the MDD gene chip in this analysis was sourced from the GEO database, which possesses a restricted number of pertinent gene chip samples.
    Conclusions: These findings indicate that ERDEGs especially including ERLIN1, SEC61B, and USP13 associated the infiltration of immune cells may be potential diagnostic indicators for MDD.
