Abstract Bidens procera L.C.Xu ex X.W.Zheng (B. procera) as a new species was firstly investigated by phytochemical method, resulting in the isolation of sixteen compounds including eight flavonoids (7–14), four caffeoyl derivatives (3–6), two coumarins (1–2), one alkaloid (15), and one aliphatic (16). Their structures were elucidated by analyses of their NMR and MS spectroscopic data as well as by comparison of these data with those published in the literature. Compounds 2, 9, 15, 16 were reported from the Compositae family for the first time. Chemotaxonomic studies indicated that there were close relationships between species B. procera and Bidens pilosa L. (B. pilosa), as well as genera Bidens and Chrysanthemum.

Abstract Using the traditional Chinese medicine theory of “Bi-zheng" caused by kidney deficiency, combined with modern medical science and technology, this study assessed the relationships among organ weight, cytokines, pathological manifestations, and traditional Chinese medicine kidney deficiency syndrome in rats with rheumatoid arthritis.Sixty Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal, collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model, and kidney deficiency arthralgia model groups. Rats in the kidney deficiency arthritis group underwent removal of the testis or ovary and administration of an inflammatory agent. Rats in the control group solely received an inflammatory agent. Type II collagen-induced arthritis was induced within 1 week of the winter solstice or summer solstice, in order to sample organs and observe the mental state, posture, fur color, activity level, excrement, body weight, and organ weight of the rats.Compared with the normal and CIA model groups, the kidney deficiency arthralgia model group showed fast and acute onset, prominent symptoms, most obvious potential joint swelling, worst general state, and least amount of weight gain. Compared with the normal group, the proportion of thymus, spleen, and adrenal glands of model rats were larger in winter, with varying degrees of hyperplasia and hypertrophy; these differences were statistically significant (P < .05). In summer, model coefficients were greater than normal in the spleen, while the thymus and adrenal gland coefficients were significantly different between the normal and kidney deficiency arthralgia groups. In summer, the thymus in the kidney deficiency arthralgia group exhibited hypertrophy and hyperplasia, whereas the thymus in the control group did not; this difference was statistically significant (P = .015). Thymus and adrenal gland proportions exhibited seasonal differences in CIA model rats; these were statistically significant (P < .05), with high performance in winter and low performance in summer. The spleen proportion exhibited a trend of high performance in winter and low performance in summer in the kidney deficiency arthralgia model rats.Kidney deficiency is an internal condition linked with the occurrence of arthralgia, and seasonal factors exhibit an impact on the morbidity of arthritis in rats.

Abstract Background: Zheng represents pattern differentiation in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as the basic unit and a key concept in TCM therapeutic theory, is based on the physiology and pathology of TCM. None of the outcome measurements of atopic dermatitis (AD) are Zheng-specific. The effectiveness of TCM is likely to be underestimated without a Zheng-related symptom-specific instrument. The aim of this study was to develop an instrument for measuring the Zheng-related symptom-specific status of patients with AD.
Methods: We followed standard methodology to develop the instrument, including item generation and selection, item reduction and presentation, and pretesting, and recruited 188 patients with AD involved in a six-center randomized-controlled trial (ChiCTR-TRC-08000156) to validate the questionnaire. We conducted construct validity, reliability, and responsiveness analysis. The standardized effect size (SES) and standardized response mean (SRM) were used to calculate the responsiveness of additional items and the total score for the rating items.
Results: ZRADSQ has 15 items, with 12 rating items and 3 additional items. The 12 rating items fall within three domains: AD symptoms (n = 6 items); Heat (n = 4 items) and Mood (n = 2 items). Confirmatory factor analysis provided good support for a three-factor model (d.f. = 51, x2=97.11, RMSEA = 0.07, CFI = 0.96), and the Pearson's correlation coefficient between ZRADSQ and Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) was 0.40 (P < 0.001). The reliability was also good, with a Cronbach's alpha value for ZRADSQ of 0.84, a split-half coefficient of 0.75, and a test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.98. The standardized effect size and standardized response mean were close to or larger than 1, which indicated moderate to good responsiveness.
Conclusions: The ZRADSQ demonstrates promising reliability, validity, and responsiveness. It can be used to determine whether Zheng-specific or symptom-specific treatments relieve the symptom that is most bothersome the patient.
