    Title translation The psychometric value of the Verbal Short-Term Memory Scale by Arnold & Kohlmann in psychiatry.
    Abstract Objective: Of various tests used to determine verbal short-term-memory deficits in mentally ill persons the Verbal Short-Term Memory Scale by Arnold and Kohlmann meets the important criteria of being fast, user-friendly and every day life-like, despite its old norms and questionable validity. The aim of this study was to assess the psychological value of this instrument by correlating it with those two subtests of the standardized Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), which assess verbal shortterm memory.
    Methods: 478 random patients at a university psychiatric hospital, who were referred for psychological testing, were examined with the Verbal Short-Term Memory Scale by Arnold & Kohlmann and the subtests "Logical Memory" and "Verbal Paired Associates" of the Wechsler Memory Scale.
    Results: Performance by the total sample on both memory tests was in the lowest or just below the range of dispersion for normal values. All scales of both tests showed significant positive correlation.
    Conclusions: Despite its age the Verbal Short-Term Memory Scale by Arnold & Kohlmann is especially recommended for quick differential diagnosis of a patient's memory in an acute psychiatric examination.

    Abstract Arnold Durig (1872-1961) grew up in the Austrian mountains in the period when intense exploration of the Alps started. As an enthusiastic mountaineer, scientist, and physician, he became one of the pioneers exploring physiological and pathophysiological aspects of humans sojourning to high altitudes. At the beginning of the 20(th) century, Durig was one of the great physiologists whose knowledge covered the whole field of physiology. Durig founded a renowned School and his students spread all over the world. He stayed in close contact with many colleagues and famous scientists, such as Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud. Although he was an extremely productive and acknowledged physiologist and teacher at that time, his work and life are not very well known at the beginning of the 3(rd) millennium, even by high altitude physiologists. Thus, this article provides an overview on Durig's life and work, highlighting the most important scientific studies he performed at moderate and high altitudes, in an attempt to provide a few links to the development of high altitude research in the late 19(th) and early 20(th) centuries, complemented by some comments from a current point of view.

    Abstract Anliegen: Unter den verschiedenen Verfahren zur Erhebung des verbalen Kurzzeitgedächtnisses bei Menschen mit psychischen Störungsbildern erfüllt der Kurzzeitgedächtnistest von Arnold und Kohlmann trotz fraglicher Testgütekriterien wichtige Anforderungen wie Zeitökonomie, Anwenderfreundlichkeit und Alltagsnähe. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es, dieses etwas in Vergessenheit geratene Verfahren auf seinen testpsychologischen Gehalt anhand der Übereinstimmungsvalidität mit einem anderen gut genormten Gedächtnistest mit ausgewiesener Reliabilität und Validität zu prüfen. Methode: 478 unselektierte Patienten des Departments für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie Innsbruck, welche einer psychologischen Testung zugewiesen wurden, wurden sowohl mit dem Arnold- Kohlmann-Gedächtnistest als auch mit denjenigen 2 Subtests der Wechsler Memory Scale, welche speziell das verbale Kurzzeitgedächtnis erfassen, untersucht. Ergebnisse: Die Skalen beider Verfahren korrelieren signifikant positiv. Die Leistungen beider Gedächtnistests liegen in der Gesamtstichprobe im untersten bzw. knapp unter dem Streubereich der Norm. Schlussfolgerungen: Für eine zeiteffiziente differentialdiagnostische Einschätzung des verbalen Kurzzeitgedächtnisses von Patienten einer Akutpsychiatrie erweist sich der Arnold-Kohlmann-Gedächtnistest als praktikables und ausreichend valides Verfahren.
