    Abstract Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the potential occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, following exposure to traumatic events, in Italian midwives and their consequent influence on the quality of midwives' professional lives. In addition, data were collected on the major traumatic events described by midwives.
    Method: A cross-sectional study related the socio-demographic characteristics of 286 midwives with the scores obtained on two assessment scales, one for post-traumatic stress disorder (IES-R) and the other for quality of life (ProQOL V). The percentage of midwives who obtained a score higher than the predetermined threshold value in both questionnaires was noted, and the correlations that emerged were highlighted. Through this qualitative method, their significant work-related traumatic events were investigated to finally detect the prevalence percentage of each category.
    Results: The proportion of midwives scoring higher than 33 on the IES-R scale, indicating a higher likelihood of PTSD, was 48.6%. Freelancers or outpatient clinic midwives had lower mean IES scores (
    Conclusions: The emerging data may confirm the data in the literature, namely those showing that midwives are prone to developing work-related PTSD, particularly due to their exposure to traumatic events such as maternal and neonatal death.

    Abstract Background: Almost 44 million people are currently living with dementia worldwide. This number is set to increase threefold by 2050, posing a serious threat to the sustainability of healthcare systems. Overuse of antipsychotic drugs for the management of the symptoms of dementia carries negative consequences for patients while also increasing the health expenditures for society. Supportive care (SC) interventions could be considered a safer and potentially cost-saving option. In this paper we provide a systematic review of the existing evidence regarding the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of SC interventions targeted towards persons living with dementia and their caregivers.
    Methods: A systematic literature review was performed between February 2019 and December 2021 through searches of the databases PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Library, CENTRAL, Embase and PsycINFO. The search strategy was based on PRISMA 2020 recommendations. We considered studies published through December 2021 with no lower date limit. We distinguished between five categories of SC strategies: cognitive therapies, physical activity, indirect strategies (organisational and environmental changes), interventions primarily targeted towards family caregivers, and multicomponent interventions.
    Results: Of the 5,479 articles retrieved, 39 met the inclusion criteria. These studies analysed 35 SC programmes located at different stages of the dementia care pathway. Eleven studies provided evidence of high cost-effectiveness for seven interventions: two multicomponent interventions; two indirect interventions; two interventions aimed at caregivers of community-dwelling persons with dementia; one community-based cognitive stimulation and occupational programme.
    Conclusion: We find that the most promising SC strategies in terms of cost-effectiveness are multicomponent interventions (targeted towards both nursing home residents and day-care service users), indirect strategies (group living and dementia care management at home), some forms of tailored occupational therapy, together with some psychosocial interventions for caregivers of community-dwelling persons with dementia. Our results suggest that the adoption of effective SC interventions may increase the economic sustainability of dementia care.

    Abstract Chronic kidney disease affects many people around the world, leading those affected to replacement therapy such as hemodialysis. People who undergo hemodialysis generally undertake 2-3 treatments per week, lasting about 3-4 h each; patients spend many hours per week in contact with nurses, building a therapeutic relationship. The purpose of this work is to assess the quality of nurses' perceived caring attitudes and behaviors and to determine their perceptions regarding the importance of the therapeutic relationship with the assisted patients. A self-reported questionnaire composed of three sections was administered to nurses; the first section included sociodemographic questions, the second the Caring Nurse-Patient Interaction Scale (CNPI-23), and the third part of the questionnaire was composed of open-ended questions investigating patients' expectations according to nurses, the relevance of the therapeutic relationship on their work, and its effect on themselves and/or their own job satisfaction. Statistically significant correlations and trends have been observed between nurses' sociodemographic data and the CNPI-23 items. In the clinical care area, nurses who have a post-basic degree or more years of experience feel more competent than those in other categories; in the relational care area, women tend to feel more competent than men. No correlations were found between the humanistic and comfort care areas. According to the results, the post-basic training of dialysis nurses and the adoption of organizational strategies that encourage nurse retention should be enhanced. This study was not registered.

    Abstract Seed longevity is a complex trait that depends on numerous factors. It varies among species and populations, and within different seed morphs produced by the same plant. Little is known about variation in longevity in different seed morphs or the physiological and molecular basis of these differences. We evaluated the longevity and oxidative stress status in heteromorphic seeds aged in two different storage conditions. We compared controlled ageing tests (seed storage at 45°C and 60% relative humidity; a method of accelerated ageing used to estimate longevity in genebank conditions) with storage in a genebank for up to 40 years (-18°C and 8% seed moisture content).     Abstract In this study, marine biofilms were cultured in a flow-lane, semi-continuous photobioreactor at different irradiances and flows to evaluate their combined effect on biofilms' phototrophic composition and photosynthetic activity. Taxon richness, evaluated by different microscopy techniques, including transmission and scanning electron microscopy, resulted to be heavily reduced from source communities to mature cultures.     Abstract In this study, marine biofilms were cultured in a flow-lane, semi-continuous photobioreactor at different irradiances and flows to evaluate their combined effect on biofilms' phototrophic composition and photosynthetic activity. Taxon richness, evaluated by different microscopy techniques, including transmission and scanning electron microscopy, resulted to be heavily reduced from source communities to mature cultures. The strongest decrease was observed for diatoms, which were overcome by cyanobacteria and green algae over time. Photosynthetic performance was investigated by pulse amplitude modulated fluorescence. Irradiance was the main driver of data distribution of the photosynthetic parameters rel.ETRₘₐₓ and Iₖ, while flow rate affected α and ΔF/Fₘ’. The combination of irradiance and flow rate affected ΔF/Fₘ’ reflecting the photosynthetic performance of the most relatively abundant taxa. Higher ΔF/Fₘ’ was attained when cyanobacteria and green algae were dominating, whilst lower ΔF/Fₘ’ when diatoms occurred in the initial phase of biofilm development.

    Abstract Photosynthetic performance of algal-bacterial biofilms from an Italian wastewater treatment plant was studied in a flow-lane photobioreactor at different irradiances, temperatures, and flow regime to evaluate the effects of these environmental parameters on biofilms’ functioning, in view of application of these communities in wastewater biological treatment. Pulse amplitude modulated fluorescence was used to estimate the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΔF/F<inf>m</inf>’) of the light-acclimated biofilms and to perform rapid light curves (RLCs) for the determination of the photosynthetic parameters (rel.ETR<inf>max</inf>, α, I<inf>k</inf>). Chl a, ash free dry weight (AFDW), and dry weight (DW) were measured to assess phototrophic and whole biofilm biomass development over time. From the analysis of photosynthetic parameter variation with light intensity, temperature and flow rate, it was possible to identify the set of experimental values favoring biofilm photosynthetic activity. Biomass increased over time, especially at the highest irradiances, where substrata were fastly colonized and mature biofilms developed at all temperatures and flow conditions tested.

    Abstract Aims: The work investigates the impact of grapes processing at the beginning of winemaking on the composition of microbiota during the oenological fermentations and on the composition of obtained wines.
    Methods and results: The experiments were conducted in a biodynamic winery to exclude interference due to microbial starters. Three winemaking protocols, with different pre-fermentative management of grapes, were followed by plate count and next generation sequencing on 16S for bacteria and internal transcribed spacer sequencing (ITS) for yeast. Chemical and sensory characterization of wine was performed. The grape processing influenced the evolution of microbiota (especially lactic and acetic acid bacteria) and the fermentation rate. The highest biodiversity was observed in the experiment carried out with whole grapes and carbonic maceration, with the presence of bacterial groups not usually found in winemaking (Bacteroidales, Clostridiales, Oscillospira). The different microbiotas influenced the organic acid profile of wines, the content of biogenic ammines and the perception of organoleptic descriptors linked to the vine cultivar (Syrah).
    Conclusions: Carbonic maceration impacts on the evolution of the microbiota and the wine features. The absence of addition of starters and sulphur dioxide would seem to be correlated with the high microbial biodiversity.
    Significance and impact of the study: Carbonic maceration is a traditional winemaking practice, today there are difficulties in its managing because the anaerobiosis stimulates spoilage micro-organisms. The work elucidates the reasons of these difficulties and identified some microbial groups rarely associated with winemaking. The ratio of ethanol accumulation along with physical management of grapes and the supply of oxygen during the early stages of winemaking are powerful instruments of oenological variability, able to offer new possibilities to winemakers in order to defining the quality of red wines.
