Abstract Researchers treated seed technology and crop yield as exogenous, thereby generating bias estimates. In practice, seed technology increases yield and it’s stimulated by social capital and other factors. This paper develops a choice model of maize-seed exogenously, then tested and corrected for causality. A multistage sampling procedure was adopted using seven Agricultural Development Programme zones drawn from purposively selected Oyo and Osun states. A block each was randomly selected per zone. Twenty-one cells were randomly selected, then data were collected from 385 respondents using a structured questionnaire: Data were analyzed using Ordinary Least Square and Two-Stage Least Square α 0.05. Durbin score chi2(1) = 6.65 (p= 0.009) and Wu-Haussmann F (1,37) = 6.431 (p = 0.012), showed reverse causality that was resolved by the Two-Stage Least Square model. The Two-Stage Least Square result indicated that education (β=-0.53), seed quantity (β=-0.13), seed price (β=-0.08), negatively affected the choice of seed and yield while farm size (β=2.05), fertilizer (β=0.004), herbicide (β=0.22), output-price (β=0.02), meeting attendance index(β=0.02), and improved seed ((β=2.66), had a positive influence. Social capital spurs the use of improved seed, thereby increase maize yield. Consequently, active participation in social groups and the use of improved seed is recommended to increase yield.

Abstract A major complication of acute ischemic stroke is death and disability. The emergence of reperfusion therapy in form of thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy has led to the reversal of this trend in high-income countries. Low- and middle-income countries are yet to benefit maximally from these time-bound treatment options due to some limitations. We intend to highlight some of these in this report. We report an 80-year-old male patient with hypertension and firstdegree AV block admitted 3 hours after the onset of stroke with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score of 13 and Medical Research Council (MRC) muscle power grade 3 in both the left upper and lower limb. Urgent non-contrast brain CT revealed no evidence of hemorrhage. Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was administered at a dose of 0.6 mg/kg 9 hours after symptom onset. He made significant improvement afterward and was discharged. The challenges encountered in his management include prehospital and intrahospital delay, and unavailability of tissue plasminogen activator. There is a need for an improved healthcare delivery system in order to reduce the morbidity associated with acute ischemic stroke.

Abstract Background: Successful implementation of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) is likely to improve pregnancy outcomes and is essential for quality maternity care. Context in implementation is described as factors that enabled or disabled implementation of interventions. While the context of implementation is important for the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions, the context of EmONC implementation has not been widely studied in Nigeria.
Methods: The research design was cross-sectional descriptive. A mixed-methods approach was used to assess and explore the context of implementing EmONC in referral centres in Osun state. A purposive sampling technique was used to select the three tertiary health facilities in Osun State and six secondary health facilities from the six administrative zones in the State. A total of 186 healthcare providers in these referral centres participated in the quantitative part of the study, and eighteen in-depth interviews were conducted for its qualitative aspect. An adapted questionnaire from Context Assessment Index and an interview guide were used to collect data. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 significance level, while qualitative data were analysed using the thematic approach.
Results: The percentage mean score of context strength in EmONC implementation was 63% ± 10.46 in secondary and 68% ± 10.47 in tertiary health facilities. There was a significant difference in the leadership (F (1, 184) = 8.35, p < 0.01), evaluation (F (1, 184) = 5.35, p = 0.02) and overall context (F (1, 184) = 6.46, p = 0.01) of EmONC implementation in secondary and tertiary health facilities. Emerging themes in EmONC context were: Resources for EmONC implementation; Demand for EmONC; Efficiency of funding; Institutional leadership; and Performance evaluation.
Conclusions: The context of EmONC implementation in the referral health facilities was generally weak. The secondary health facilities' weaknesses were worse compared to the tertiary health facilities. The five key contextual factors could inform strategies for improving EmONC implementation in health facilities to ensure improved access to care that will reduce deaths from obstetric complications in Nigeria.

Abstract Tuberculosis (TB) has continued to be a global public health issue, especially in developing countries, where Nigeria accounts for 4% of the global TB burden. However, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals targets for 2030, there is a need for adequate and robust awareness campaigns to ensure that individuals in the communities are aware of the total TB program package. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) towards TB of the residents of two communities affected by the TB scourge in Osun State, Nigeria. An interviewer-administered, semi-structured questionnaire adapted from the WHO-KAP study guide was employed, and the data generated were analysed using the SPSS statistical package. A total of 280 respondents participated in the study comprising 162 (57.9%) males and 118 (42.1%) females, a large percentage of the respondents (273/97.5%) know about TB and know that anybody can be infected (63.6%). However, in this study, we obtained the following KAP scores: overall good knowledge of TB: 60% (Iwo- 54.7% and Ikire-65.2%), overall good attitude towards TB: 50% (Iwo- 53.3% and Ikire- 46.7%) and overall good TB preventive practices 65.2% (Iwo- 66.6% and Ikire- 63.8%). Ikire respondents were significantly more knowledgeable than Iwo respondents (p = .002), while Iwo respondents had better TB attitudes than Ikire respondents (p = .03). Predictors of good KAP scores were accommodation type, education, age and main source of income of respondents. This study assessed the level of community TB-KAP and reinforced the need for a more robust awareness campaign for better TB health service utilisation.

Abstract Forest encroachment is a common practice that has led to the destruction of canopy trees in the Guinea savanna part of Nigeria. This study investigated the influence of human activities on vegetation health and species composition of Doma forest reserve located in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Landsat satellite data from 1986 to 2021 were utilized to assess forest cover change, land surface temperature (LST), and vegetation indices (VIs). The results show that dense woodland vegetation in the Doma forest reserve depreciated between 1991 and 1999 by 17.82% before increasing by 7.37% between 1999 and 2021. Similarly, vegetation greenness (measured by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Chlorophyll Vegetation Index (GCVI), and leaf area index (LAI)) of the forest mirrored the changes observed in the forest cover. The LST extracted for each year was correlated with all VIs, and an inverse relationship was observed in all relationships analyzed. The decline in greenness between 1999 and 2011 was attributed to increasing lumbering, bush burning, and sand dredging activities. Results also showed the current diversity state (H1 = 0.23), evenness (0.63), and the volume of tree (1.31 m

Abstract Background: Neurological disorders are common and contribute significantly to disease burden, disability-adjusted life years and death.
Objective: To assess the distribution of neurological disease in patients presenting to our hospital.
Methods: The records of the Adult Neurology Clinic in Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria were reviewed retrospectively for the years 2003-2005 and 2010-2014, and diagnoses as made by the Consultant were obtained and analyzed.
Results: The total number of complaints was 1,524 and 86.4% of these were neurological in nature. Episodic and paroxysmal disorders (ICD-10) accounted for 54.1% of the diagnoses, and epilepsy and stroke were the most common of these. Of the 1,226 patients seen during the period, 91.4% had neurological disorders. The peak occurrence of these disorders was within the first three decades of life.
Conclusion: Epilepsy and stroke are the commonest neurological disorders in the outpatient setting and there should be more studies in the community on their prevalence and impact.

Abstract Background: Aflatoxin-contaminated grain consumption over the years has been known to result in serious health hazards for its consumers. The present study investigated the effects of harvest seasons and drying methods on aflatoxins in freshly harvested maize. A 2 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design was used; two harvesting seasons (dry and wet), maize varieties (P3966W, P4063W and P4226), moisture contents (0.15, 0.12, and 0.10 g kg
Results: P3966W and P4063W with an initial moisture content of (0.226 and 0.234 g kg
Conclusion: Variety, type of dryer and season affect aflatoxin contamination of maize. The adoption of MFSD drastically reduced the duration of drying and consequently controlled contamination by aflatoxins. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
