    A Precision Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum with Sub-percent Energy Resolution

    Abstract The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.

    Abstract Heterojunctions of Ta₂O₅ and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been successfully synthesized by a facile and cost-effective hydrothermal method, with a super thin and uniform Ta₂O₅ shell wrapped around the MWCNT. The combination of Ta₂O₅ and MWCNTs at the interface not only modifies the morphology but also forms the p-n heterojunction, which contributes to the reconstruction of band structure, as well as the low resistance of matrix and highly chemisorbed oxygen content. The Ta₂O₅@MWCNT p-n heterojunction exhibits ultrasensitive performance to ethanol at room temperature, with a response of 3.15 toward 0.8 ppm ethanol and a detection limit of 0.173 ppm. The sensor has a high reproducibility at various concentrations of ethanol, superior selectivity to other gases, and long-term stability. The strategy of hybriding metal oxide semiconductors with MWCNT promises to provide a feasible and further developable pathway for high-performance room-temperature gas sensors.

    Abstract Background: Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO, Buerger's disease) is an inflammatory and obstructive vasculopathy, which leads to limb ischemic rest pain and ulcerations in the acute stage.
    Objectives: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of excimer laser-assisted balloon angioplasty (BA) for patients with acute infrapopliteal TAO.
    Method: This was a single-center retrospective cohort study. In this study, 220 patients with 210 target limbs between January 2012 and September 2021 were involved. Among them, 52 target limbs have received endovascular excimer laser-assisted balloon angioplasty from January 2017. The ankle brachial index (ABI), rest pain score, ulcer, Rutherford classification, and TASC II classification were assessed. The follow-up time was 6 months.
    Results: The technical success rate of laser + BA and BA groups was 71.15 and 65.82% (
    Conclusion: Excimer laser debulking-assisted angioplasty is a feasible, effective, and safe method to treat acute infrapopliteal TAO.

    Abstract The crevice theory proposed by professor WANG Juyi is analyzed in this article. In the crevice theory, it is believed that the meridians are located among "skin, pulse, flesh, tendon and bone", and the crevice is the path for the transportation of qi-blood and body fluid in the body, which is the essential condition for vital movement. This is in agreement with the idea of "action through inaction" from Tao Teh King. Based on crevice theory, the abnormalities of meridians can reflex the deficiency and excess of diseases, and regulating meridians is a significant way to treat diseases, and maintaining smooth meridian is important for healthcare.

    Abstract Objective: Divided orbital fibroblasts from patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) into CD90⁺ and CD90⁻ subsets respect to surface CD90 expression, then determined whether CD90⁺ and/or CD90⁻ fibroblasts were capable of differentiating into lipofibroblasts.
    Methods: Fibroblasts subset separation into CD90⁺ and CD90⁻ subsets was accomplished by three to four rounds of magnetic bead selection, then treated with 3-isobutyl-1-lmethylxanthine (IBMX), insulin and dexamethasone which was an known inducer of the lipofibroblastic phenotype, then the cells were observed every day to find Lipid droplets. Oil red O staining were conducted at 5 d, 10 d, 15 d, 20 d and 25 d after inducing. The percent of lipofibroblasts were calculated.
    Results: The ratio in fibroblast derived from extraocular muscles of differentiating into lipofibroblast is less than from connective/adipose tissue (P < 0.05). The ratio of CD90⁺ fibroblast is less than CD90⁻ fibroblast (P < 0.05). CD90⁺ cells derived from extraocular miscles could not be induced to differentiate into lipofibroblast. The ratio in CD90⁻ fibroblast from connective/adipose tissue is highest (P < 0.05).
    Conclusion: Orbital fibroblast which has the function of differentiating into lipofibroblast is mainly CD90⁻ connective/adipose tissue.

    Abstract The newborn screening of homocystinuria in Taiwan has never been formally reported before. Since 1984, out of 5 million newborns screened, only 3 newborns (Han Taiwanese) suffering from homocystinuria were detected in this newborn screening program. Four mutations (p.R121L [c.362G>T], p.E176K [c.526G>A], p.V320G [c.959T>G] and p.G259D [c.776G>A]) were identified in these 3 patients. Unexpectedly, we recently found 8 patients presenting with homocystinuria in an Austronesian Taiwanese Tao tribe. Out of them, three patients participated in the newborn screening program but were unidentified by the current newborn homocystinuria (using methionine as a marker) screening. All the Tao patients are homozygous for a new p.D47E (c.141T>A) mutation. Among the 428 adult islanders screened for the D47E mutation, approximately 1 in 7.78 is a carrier of the mutation, and an estimated 1 in 240 islanders suffered from homocystinuria. This is the highest known prevalence of homocystinuria worldwide. The result of expression studies of all the mutations identified in Taiwan revealed that, except for p.D47E mutation, all mutations were severely limited in their ability to form functional tetramers. The clinical manifestations of the Tao patients varied widely, despite sharing the same mutation and very similar genetic and environmental backgrounds. Comparisons of clinical and biochemical phenotypes of these patients were presented in this report.

    Abstract The conduction mechanism of a Pd/TaOx/Ta/Pd selector device, which exhibits high non-linearity (∼10(4)) and excellent uniformity, has been systematically investigated by current-voltage-temperature characterization. The measurement and simulation results indicate two dominant processes of selector current at opposite biases: thermionic emission and tunnel emission. The current-voltage-temperature behaviors of the selector can be well explained using the Simmons' trapezoidal energy barrier model. The TaOx-based selective layer was further integrated with a HfO2-based resistive switching layer to form a selector-less resistive random access memory (RRAM) device structure. The integrated device showed a reliable resistive switching behavior with a high non-linearity (∼5 × 10(3)) in the low resistance state (LRS), which can effectively mitigate the sneak path current issue in RRAM crossbar arrays. Evaluations of a crossbar array based on these selector-less RRAM cells show less than 4% degradation in read margin for arrays up to 1 Mbit in size. These results highlight the different conduction mechanisms in selector device operation and will provide insight into continued design and optimization of RRAM arrays.

    Abstract We show that tourism activities severely impact the ecology of Orchid Island, its natural resources, and the culture of the Tao tribe. For example, highway widening, in response to the increased traffic volumes caused by tourism, required many Pandanus trees to be cut and removed, which has placed the coconut crabs in danger of extinction. To promote eco-tourism, observation trips to observe Elegant Scops owls and Birdwing butterflies have taken place, which has affected the breeding of these two protected species. The Elegant Scops owls- and Birdwing butterflies-related tourism activities also break the "evil spirits" taboo of the Tao people and have caused the disappearance of the specifications for using traditional natural resources, causing natural ecosystems to face the threat of excessive use. In addition to promoting and advocating aboriginal tourism of the Tao people on Orchid Island, the Taiwanese government should help the Tao people to develop a management model that combines traditional regulations and tourism activities.
