Abstract Bing De Ling is a Chinese herbal formula that has been used to treat cancer patients for more than a decade. However, the molecular mechanisms behind its anti-tumor efficacy are still elusive. Here, we show that Bing De Ling inhibits cell proliferation in ovarian cancer epithelial cell lines, OV2008 and C13. It induces G1/S arrest in a p53-dependent manner in that this effect is attenuated in OV2008 cells transfected with dominant-negative p53 plasmid. Moreover, we show that Bing De Ling up-regulates p53 transcriptional activities as well as its downstream target genes, such as p21Cip1, MDM2, and MDMX. In addition, Bing De Ling inhibits MDMX-p53 interaction which may result in stabilization and activation of p53. Collectively, our results suggest that the anti-tumor activity of Bing De Ling may be in part due to activation of p53.

  9. Article: Respiratory activity of ‘Chelan’, ‘Bing’ and ‘Selah’ sweet cherries in relation to fruit traits at green, white-pink, red and mahogany ripening stages

Zhao, Yunyang / Harold P. Collins / N. Richard Knowles / Nnadozie Oraguzie

    2013

Abstract: ... color, which includes green, white-pink, red and mahogany stages. ‘Chelan’, ‘Bing’ and ‘Selah ...

Abstract Sweet cherry fruit development is subjectively sub-divided into four stages on the basis of exocarp color, which includes green, white-pink, red and mahogany stages. ‘Chelan’, ‘Bing’ and ‘Selah’, representing early-, mid- and late-season cultivars, respectively, and three different abscission-responses, were selected to explore the relationships between respiratory activity, fruit quality attributes, and pedicel-fruit retention force (PFRF) at the four developmental stages. Respiratory rate was higher in the early ripening cultivar (‘Chelan’) than in the mid- or late ripening cultivars at maturity. However, the cultivars showed similar respiration patterns with a rapid decline of respiration at the green stage followed by a gradual decline, irrespective of abscission behavior or ripening date. A small respiratory peak was observed from the end of the green stage to the beginning of the white-pink stage. Firmness and pedicel retention force (the force required to break the stem and to separate the stem from the fruit) were positively correlated at all stages of fruit development; however, these attributes were negatively correlated with fruit size, particularly at the white-pink and mahogany stages. Also, both firmness and pedicel retention force were greatest at the transition of green and white-pink stages. Fruit respiration rate increased as PFRF increased and decreased as fruit weight, size, soluble solids content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA) increased in all three cultivars.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate one-stage arterial Switch operation for transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and Taussig-Bing with aortic arch obstruction.
Methods: From January 2001 to June 2004, 8 patients had aortic arch obstruction, 3 with TGA and 5 with Taussig-Bing. Except one patient was 8 months old, all of others were 5 days to 3 months old, the mean operation age was (40 +/- 36) d and the mean weight was (4.3 +/- 0.5) kg. All patients were repaired by one-stage operation. The aortic arch obstruction was repaired in deep hypothermia circulatory arrest, and arterial switch procedure was performed in deep hypothermia and low flow perfusion.
Results: There had 1 death who was 8 months old and had low cardiac output, complete artrioventricular block (AVB) and severe pulmonary hypertension postoperation. One patient was 3 months old who had asphyxia at 5 days postoperatively. Six patients followed up from 5 months to 2 years. One Taussig-Bing with interrupted aortic arch had residual obstruction at the anastomosis of aorta. Two had trivial aortic valve regurgitation, and one had mild pulmonary valve regurgitation.
Conclusions: One-stage repair for TGA and Taussig-Bing with aortic obstruction achieves excellent results. The reasons for the death were pulmonary hypertension and abnormal coronary artery. The operative procedure should be performed as early as possible for the better result.
