Abstract Plants consist of fundamental units of growth called phytomers (leaf or bract, axillary bud, node, and internode), which are repeated and modified throughout shoot development to give plants plasticity for survival and adaptation. One phytomer modification is the suppression or outgrowth of bracts, the leaves subtending the flowers. The floral meristem identity regulator LEAFY (LFY) and the organ boundary genes BLADE-ON-PETIOLE1 (BOP1) and BOP2, have been shown to suppress bract development in Arabidopsis, as mutations in these genes result in bract outgrowth. However, much less is known about the mechanisms that promote bract outgrowth in Arabidopsis mutants such as these. Further understanding of this mechanism may provide a potential tool for modifying leaf development. Here, we showed that the MADS-box genes SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS1 (SOC1), FRUITFUL (FUL), and AGAMOUS-LIKE24 (AGL24) play more important roles than BOP1/2 and LFY in bract suppression, and that AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) and the partially redundant AINTEGUMENTA-LIKE6 (AIL6) are necessary for bract outgrowth in these mutant backgrounds. We also showed that misexpression of AIL6 alone is sufficient for bract outgrowth. Our data reveal a mechanism for bract suppression and outgrowth and provide insight into phytomer plasticity.

Abstract Porous biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics are widely used in bone tissue engineering, and the mechanical properties of BCP implants must be reliable. However, the effects of pore structure (e.g., shape and size) on the mechanical properties are not well understood. In this study, we used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of pore shape and size on the mechanical behavior of BCP nanoparticles. BCP void models with cylindrical and cuboid pores ranging from 2 to 16 nm in diameter were constructed, and the elastic moduli were calculated. In addition, uniaxial tensile and compressive tests were performed on the models. We found that the pore size had a more significant impact on the mechanical properties of BCP than pore shape. Further, the elastic moduli decreased nonlinearly with increasing pore size. In addition, the tensile and compressive strength also decreased with the increase in pore size, but the ductility improved. Furthermore, deformation and fracture were more likely to occur near the pores and at the phase interfaces as a result of high atomic local strain in the calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite area. The results of this work reveal the effects of pore parameters on the mechanical properties of porous BCP at the nanometer level, which may aid the design of improved porous and multiphase CaP-based biomaterials for bone regeneration.

Abstract Isocyanate esters are widely recognized for their superior curing capabilities. Leveraging this attribute, the current research formulated a modified cold-mixed asphalt blend using 4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). Tests and analyses of the MDI-modified asphalt with varying inclusion percentages of MDI revealed that a mixture containing 15% rock asphalt and 15% MDI-modified asphalt exhibited a more balanced, comprehensive performance. We also conducted an examination of the role and properties of MDI in asphalt modification using molecular dynamics simulations. The cold-curing properties of MDI-modified asphalt as compared to petroleum asphalt were evaluated based on its density, free volume analysis, cohesive energy density, and glass transition temperature. Implementing the LB-13 gradation-a cold-mixed asphalt gradation with a nominal particle size of 13.2 mm recommended by Chinese specifications-we prepared MDI-modified cold-mixed asphalt and carried out analyses of its mechanical characteristics, high-temperature performance, and water damage resistance. The results demonstrated that MDI-modified asphalt showcases excellent ductility, flexibility, and aging resistance, surpassing the performance of petroleum asphalt. The stability, high-temperature rutting, and water damage resistance of the MDI-modified cold-mixed asphalt exceeded the requirements for hot-mixed asphalt. This research provides theoretical and experimental support for isocyanate ester applications in asphalt engineering, presenting significant value for practical engineering applications.

Abstract The juvenile-to-adult phase transition during vegetative development is a critical decision point in a plant's life cycle. This transition is mediated by a decline in levels of miR156/157 and an increase in the activities of its direct targets, SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) proteins. In Arabidopsis, the juvenile-to-adult transition is characterized by an increase in the length to width ratio of the leaf blade (a change in the distal region of a leaf), but what mediates this change in lamina shape is not known. Here, we show that ectopic expression of SPL9 and SPL13 produces enlarged and elongated leaves, resembling leaves from the blade-on-petiole1 (bop1) bop2 double mutant. The expression of BOP1/BOP2 is down-regulated in successive leaves, correlating with the amount of miR156 and antagonistic to the expression of SPL9 and SPL13 in leaves. SPL9 and SPL13 bind to the promoters of BOP1/BOP2 directly to repress their expression, resulting in delayed establishment of proliferative regions in leaves, which promotes more blade outgrowth (the distal region of a leaf) and suppresses petiole development (the proximal region of a leaf). Our results reveal a mechanism for leaf development along the proximal-distal axis, a heteroblastic character between juvenile leaves and adult leaves.

Abstract The facile and rapid design of efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts holds paramount significance for energy conversion devices, such as water electrolyzers and fuel cells. Despite substantial progress in catalyst synthesis and performance exploration, the design and selection processes remain inefficient. In this context, we integrate patent analysis with catalyst design, leveraging the scholarly research functionalities within patent analyses to aid in the design and synthesis of a NiFeRu-carbon catalyst as a high-performance OER catalyst. The results demonstrate that the NiFeRu-Carbon catalyst with low Ru loading (0.3 wt %) exhibits an overpotential of only 219 mV at 10 mA cm
