Abstract Decoding brain states under different cognitive tasks from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data has attracted great attention in the neuroimaging filed. However, the well-known temporal dependency in fMRI sequences has not been fully exploited in existing studies, due to the limited temporal-modeling capacity of the backbone machine learning algorithms and rigid training sample organization strategies upon which the brain decoding methods are built. To address these limitations, we propose a novel method for fine-grain brain state decoding, namely, group deep bidirectional recurrent neural network (Group-DBRNN) model. We first propose a training sample organization strategy that consists of a group-task sample generation module and a multiple-scale random fragment strategy (MRFS) module to collect training samples that contain rich task-relevant brain activity contrast (i.e., the comparison of neural activity patterns between different tasks) and maintain the temporal dependency. We then develop a novel decoding model by replacing the unidirectional RNNs that are widely used in existing brain state decoding studies with bidirectional stacked RNNs to better capture the temporal dependency, and by introducing a multi-task interaction layer (MTIL) module to effectively model the task-relevant brain activity contrast. Our experimental results on the Human Connectome Project task fMRI dataset (7 tasks consisting of 23 task sub-type states) show that the proposed model achieves an average decoding accuracy of 94.7% over the 23 fine-grain sub-type states. Meanwhile, our extensive interpretations of the intermediate features learned in the proposed model via visualizations and quantitative assessments of their discriminability and inter-subject alignment evidence that the proposed model can effectively capture the temporal dependency and task-relevant contrast.

Abstract Layered double hydroxides (LDH) can be transformed from alkaline supercapacitor material into metal-cation storage cathode working in neutral electrolytes through electrochemical activation. However, the rate performance for storing large cations is restricted by the small interlayer distance of LDH. Herein, the interlayer distance of NiCo-LDH is expanded by replacing the interlayer nitrate ions with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic anions (BDC), leading to the enhanced rate performance for storing large cations (Na

Abstract Electrification and vehicle weight reduction (lightweighting) trends are driving demand for wrought aluminum alloys. Given that aluminum scrap is currently downgraded as it is recycled into cast aluminum alloys, an imbalance in aluminum cycles is predicted to occur. We identified secondary aluminum flows by distinguishing alloy type in China with material flow analysis. Considering the adoption of advanced recovery techniques and the trends towards greater use of electric vehicles and vehicle lightweighting, we also estimated changes in the automotive demand for wrought and cast alloys along with aluminum scrap generation, as well as the reduced amount of primary aluminum used in automobiles. The results revealed the potential to recycle about 87−183 kt of wrought alloys in 2019 and about 1,054−7,152 kt in 2050 within a well-managed vehicle recycling system, thereby reducing the amount of primary aluminum ingot required for automobile production by 10−37% between 2019 to 2050.

Abstract Inflammasome activation is of central importance for the process of generation of overwhelming inflammatory response and the pathogenesis of sepsis. The intrinsic molecular mechanism for controlling inflammasome activation is still poorly understood. Here we investigated the role of p120-catenin expression in macrophages in regulating nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD) and leucine-rich repeat (LRR)- and pyrin domain-containing proteins 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation. Depletion of p120-catenin in murine bone marrow-derived macrophages enhanced caspase-1 activation and secretion of active interleukin (IL)-1β in response to ATP stimulation following LPS priming. Coimmunoprecipitation analysis showed that p120-catenin deletion promoted NLRP3 inflammasome activation by accelerating the assembly of the inflammasome complex comprised of NLRP3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC), and pro-caspase-1. Depletion of p120-catenin also increased the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. Pharmacological inhibition of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species nearly completely abolished NLRP3 inflammasome activation, caspase-1 activation, and the production of IL-1β in p120-catenin-depleted macrophages. Furthermore, p120-catenin ablation significantly disrupted mitochondrial function, evidenced by decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and lower production of intracellular ATP. In alveolar macrophage-depleted mice challenged with cecal ligation and puncture, pulmonary transplantation of p120-catenin-deficient macrophages dramatically enhanced the accumulation of IL-1β and IL-18 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. These results demonstrate that p120-catenin prevents NLRP3 inflammasome activation in macrophages by maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and reducing the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species in response to endotoxin insult. Thus, inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation by stabilization of p120-catenin expression in macrophages may be a novel strategy to prevent an uncontrolled inflammatory response in sepsis.
