Abstract The American Short Story Cycle shows the roots of modernism and postmodernism winds through the short story cycle.Reviewers ranging from the The New York Times to Amazon do not know what to call books like Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad or Jhumpa Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth. Why do such popular and acclaimed books spark debates about what they are and how they should be read? The American Short Story Cycle provides a history of this genre that has been hiding in plain sight. Dating back to the early nineteenth century and proliferating to the present, the short story cycle has been wildly popular both in the US and around the world. Stories in a cycle, which can be read singly but mean more together, reflect the individualism and pluralism that shape modern experience. This book gives a name and theory to the genre that has fostered the aesthetics of fragmentation and recurrence that characterize fiction today

Abstract Patients with low platelet counts are a concern to the obstetric anaesthetist as, although rare, there is a risk of a spinal epidural haematoma following central neuraxial blockade. Although conventional plasma-based tests are frequently used to guide central neuraxial blockade in patients with thrombocytopenia, interest in the use of viscoelastic haemostatic assays is increasing.

Abstract Most people experience trauma at some point in their lives. The sources of trauma can include accidents, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, combat, torture, or the death of a loved one. Experiencing or witnessing any of these, or other terrifying events, may make one susceptible to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a trauma- and stressor-related mental health condition. The common symptoms and consequences of PTSD include intrusive and distressing thoughts, memories, or flashbacks related to the traumatic event; avoidance of situations, people, or activities that remind one of the traumatic event; irritability, sleep difficulties, or hypervigilance; feelings of guilt, shame, or fear; substance use; strains on relationships; and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. These consequences can have devastating effects on the individual and their family members, friends, co-workers, peers, and communities. Effectively treating PTSD, therefore, is critical not only for the individual but also for the well-being of families, communities, and society at large. However, while treatments for PTSD exist, effectively treating patients with PTSD remains elusive. Further, despite the recognition that people's experiences are essential in understanding PTSD and provide valuable insights into what interventions are effective and how they impact recovery, patient perspectives and experiences of care and recovery have not been well-explored. We conducted a scoping review to address the following question: what is known about the experiences and perspectives of care and recovery for individuals with PTSD? We searched the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Embase, American Psychological Association's (APA) PsycInfo, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PTSDPubs, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed and grey literature that used qualitative methods to report on the recovery or care experiences of adults with lived experiences of PTSD. We extracted information about study objectives, study characteristics, and key findings; reported summary statistics; and performed content and thematic analyses. We identified 14 relevant studies that provide insight into the participants' lived experiences and perspectives of PTSD care and recovery. Though limited, the body of literature sheds light on critical themes and processes in the journey of care of PTSD, which we organized into four overarching categories: pre-treatment understanding and experiences of PTSD, the experience of care or treatment, the importance of relationships and social support, and expanding the understandings of recovery. Living with and healing from PTSD are a unique and individualized human experience of developing and redeveloping relationships with oneself, with others, and with society. The recommendations for practice include educating and establishing well-informed support networks for individuals with PTSD, training healthcare practitioners in all aspects of formal and informal PTSD treatment and care needs, ensuring a continuum of care, and understanding the human experience of PTSD.

Abstract Center of mass (COM) state, specifically in a local reference frame (i.e., relative to center of pressure), is an important variable for controlling and quantifying bipedal locomotion. However, this metric is not easily attainable in real time during human locomotion experiments. This information could be valuable when controlling wearable robotic exoskeletons, specifically for stability augmentation where knowledge of COM state could enable step placement planners similar to bipedal robots. Here, we explored the ability of simulated wearable sensor-driven models to rapidly estimate COM state during steady state and perturbed walking, spanning delayed estimates (i.e., estimating past state) to anticipated estimates (i.e., estimating future state). We used various simulated inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor configurations typically found on lower limb exoskeletons and a temporal convolutional network (TCN) model throughout this analysis. We found comparable COM estimation capabilities across hip, knee, and ankle exoskeleton sensor configurations, where device type did not significantly influence error. We also found that anticipating COM state during perturbations induced a significant increase in error proportional to anticipation time. Delaying COM state estimates significantly increased accuracy for velocity estimates but not position estimates. All tested conditions resulted in models with R

Abstract Small rodent animal models that recapitulate the symptomology and pathology of the human disease caused by Nipah virus (NiV) are crucial not only to study virus-induced disease but also a critical component for the development of vaccine and therapeutic candidates. The Syrian golden hamster is the most commonly used small animal model for NiV and develops clinical symptoms and pathologies that closely resemble NiV disease in humans. In this chapter, we describe standard techniques used to infect hamsters and conduct evaluation of therapeutics and vaccine candidates.

Abstract Anatomy has often been regarded as an immutable discipline where everything that needs to be known is known. This article focuses on the teaching of vulval anatomy, the diversification of gender in contemporary society, and the increasing popularity of the Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery (FGCS) industry. The binary language and singular structural arrangements contained in lectures and chapters on "female genital anatomy" are nowadays rendered exclusive and incomplete. A series of 31 semi-structured interviews with Australian anatomy teachers identified barriers and facilitators for teaching vulval anatomy to contemporary student cohorts. Barriers included lack of connection to contemporary clinical practice, time and technical difficulty involved in regularly updating online presentations, the crowded curriculum, personal sensitivity to teaching vulval anatomy, and reluctance to introduce inclusive terminology. Facilitators included lived experience, regular use of social media, and institutional initiatives toward inclusivity including the support of queer colleagues.
