    Abstract In the modern times of technological development, it is important to select adequate methods to support various food and industrial problems, including innovative techniques with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Effective analysis and the speed of algorithm implementation are key points in assessing the quality of food products. Non-invasive solutions are being sought to achieve high accuracy in the classification and evaluation of various food products. This paper presents various machine learning algorithm architectures to evaluate the efficiency of identifying blackcurrant powders (i.e., blackcurrant concentrate with a density of 67 °Brix and a color coefficient of 2.352 (E520/E420) in combination with the selected carrier) based on information encoded in microscopic images acquired via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Recognition of blackcurrant powders was performed using texture feature extraction from images aided by the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). It was evaluated for quality using individual single classifiers and a metaclassifier based on metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The research showed that the metaclassifier, as well as a single random forest (RF) classifier most effectively identified blackcurrant powders based on image texture features. This indicates that ensembles of classifiers in machine learning is an alternative approach to demonstrate better performance than the existing traditional solutions with single neural models. In the future, such solutions could be an important tool to support the assessment of the quality of food products in real time. Moreover, ensembles of classifiers can be used for faster analysis to determine the selection of an adequate machine learning algorithm for a given problem.

The microbiome takes part in the digestion of food and the generation of crucial nutrients such as short chain fatty acids (SCFA), but is also impacts the host's metabolism, immune system, and even brain functions. Due to its indispensable role, microbiota has been implicated in both the maintenance of health and the pathogenesis of many diseases. Dysbiosis in the gut microbiota has already been implicated in many neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, not much is known about the microbiome composition and its interactions in Huntington's disease (HD).     Abstract The human intestinal microbiota is a diverse and dynamic microenvironment that forms a complex, bi-directional relationship with the host. The microbiome takes part in the digestion of food and the generation of crucial nutrients such as short chain fatty acids (SCFA), but is also impacts the host’s metabolism, immune system, and even brain functions. Due to its indispensable role, microbiota has been implicated in both the maintenance of health and the pathogenesis of many diseases. Dysbiosis in the gut microbiota has already been implicated in many neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, not much is known about the microbiome composition and its interactions in Huntington’s disease (HD). This dominantly heritable, incurable neurodegenerative disease is caused by the expansion of CAG trinucleotide repeats in the huntingtin gene ( HTT ). As a result, toxic RNA and mutant protein (mHTT), rich in polyglutamine (polyQ), accumulate particularly in the brain, leading to its impaired functions. Interestingly, recent studies indicated that mHTT is also widely expressed in the intestines and could possibly interact with the microbiota, affecting the progression of HD. Several studies have aimed so far to screen the microbiota composition in mouse models of HD and find out whether observed microbiome dysbiosis could affect the functions of the HD brain. This review summarizes ongoing research in the HD field and highlights the essential role of the intestine-brain axis in HD pathogenesis and progression. The review also puts a strong emphasis on indicating microbiome composition as a future target in the urgently needed therapy for this still incurable disease.

    Abstract Over the last decade, there has been increased interest in applying biomass as a raw material for producing biofuels used for thermochemical conversions. Extensive use of biomass could lead to controversial competition for arable land, water, and food; therefore, only waste materials and agricultural by-products and residues should be used to produce biofuels. One suitable by-product of agricultural production is crop residue from the harvest of maize for grain (corn stover). The harvest residues of corn stover consist of four fractions, i.e., husks, leaves, cobs, and stalks, which are structurally and morphologically distinct. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected maize cultivars with distinct FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) earliness classifications on the chemical and energetic properties of their corn cob cores. We determined the chemical properties based on elemental analysis, and the energy properties based on the heat of combustion and calorific values. The content of ash and volatile compounds in the corn cobs were also determined. The results indicated that the heat of combustion of fresh and seasoned corn cob cores ranged from 7.62-10.79 MJ/kg and 16.19-16.53 MJ/kg, respectively. The heat of combustion and calorific value of corn cob cores in the fresh state differed significantly and were strongly correlated with maize cultivars with distinct FAO earliness.

    Abstract Among the main challenges in further advancing therapeutic strategies for Huntington's disease (HD) is the development of biomarkers which must be applied to assess the efficiency of the treatment. HD is a dreadful neurodegenerative disorder which has its source of pathogenesis in the central nervous system (CNS) but is reflected by symptoms in the periphery. Visible symptoms include motor deficits and slight changes in peripheral tissues, which can be used as hallmarks for prognosis of the course of HD, e.g., the onset of the disease symptoms. Knowing how the pathology develops in the context of whole organisms is crucial for the development of therapy which would be the most beneficial for patients, as well as for proposing appropriate biomarkers to monitor disease progression and/or efficiency of treatment. We focus here on molecular peripheral biomarkers which could be used as a measurable outcome of potential therapy. We present and discuss a list of wet biomarkers which have been proposed in recent years to measure pre- and postsymptomatic HD. Interestingly, investigation of peripheral biomarkers in HD can unravel new aspects of the disease pathogenesis. This especially refers to inflammatory proteins or specific immune cells which attract scientific attention in neurodegenerative disorders.

    Abstract Currently, society expects convenience food, which is healthy, safe, and easy to prepare and eat in all conditions. On account of the increasing popularity of modified potato starch in food industry and its increasing scope of use, this study focused on improving the physical modification of native starch with temperature changes. As a result, it was found that the suggested method of starch modification with the use of microwave power of 150 W/h had an impact on the change in starch granules. The LF-NMR method determined the whole range of temperatures in which the creation of a starch polymer network occurs. Therefore, the applied LF-NMR technique is a highly promising, noninvasive physical method, which allows obtaining a better-quality structure of potato starch gels.

    Abstract Common valerian is a medicinal plant. The underground organs of this species are used as a mild sedative and sleeping aid. Poland is one of the largest producers of this raw material in Europe, with local cultivar 'Lubelski' as a primary cultivated form. Although valerian is the subject of more or less deliberate selection carried out by farmers, it is still genetically unstable. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity of the 'Lubelski' cultivar originating from four regions of Poland (forms: L1-L4) in relation to wild-growing populations of the species. The plants were assessed in terms of the mass of underground organs and the content of valerenic acids and essential oils (EOs). The content of valerenic acids was determined using HPLC, whereas the content of EOs was determined using hydrodistillation. The composition of EOs was assessed using GC-MS GC-FID. The ploidy level of the analyzed objects was determined as well. Wild-growing populations (diploids) were characterized by lower masses of underground organs and lower contents of valerenic acid than cultivated forms (tetraploids). However, they produced higher contents of EOs. All the cultivated forms were strongly diversified with respect to the analyzed traits, including the mass of the roots (CV 49-75%), the content of valerenic acids (CV 18-55%), and the content of EOs (CV 28-57%). A total of 44 compounds were identified in the EOs. The dominant compound of both wild-growing populations and the 'Lubelski' forms were: α-fenchene, bornyl acetate, and valerenal. Among 'Lubelski' forms, the most interesting seems to be the L2 form, which was characterized by a relatively high yield and high content of valerenic acids and EOs. Thus, it appears to be a promising source of objects for further valerian cultivar improvement.

    Abstract Background: Advanced degenerative hip joint disease is bilateral in approximately 20% of cases, prompting questions of whether it is necessary to perform two separate surgical procedures, whether simultaneous bilateral hip replacement makes the surgical treatment too extensive, and whether it significantly affects the postoperative course.
    Material and methods: The study analysed the duration of hospitalisation, perioperative complications, and the need for blood transfusion in 30 patients (27 men and 3 women) with bilateral hip osteoarthritis who underwent simultaneous bilateral total hip replacement from a minimally invasive direct anterior approach followed by a fast track protocol for optimisation of perioperative management between 2014 and 2017. The mean age of patients was 60.2 years (range 43 to 77 years) and the mean follow-up period was 28 months (range 18 to 48 months).
    Results: Mean duration of hospitalisation was 4.5 days (range 3 to 9 days). A total of 4 patients (13%) required allogeneic blood transfusion. No patient developed thromboembolic or infectious complications or implant dislocation after surgery. Apart from one case where the acetabulum was not selected correctly, which resulted in postoperative loosening, there were no other significant medical events potentially related to the surgical treatment.
    Conclusions: Simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty using a minimally invasive direct approach and a fast track protocol for optimisation of perioperative management does not increase the need for perioperative blood transfusion or the number of surgical complications and constitutes a safe, effective, and recommendable method of treatment in patients with advanced bilateral degenerative disease of the hip joints.

    Abstract The study concentrates on researching possibilities of using computer image analysis and neural modeling in order to assess selected quality discriminants of spray-dried chokeberry powder. The aim of the paper is the quality identification of chokeberry powders on account of their highest dying power, the highest bioactivity, as well as technologically satisfying looseness of the powder. The article presents neural models with vision techniques backed up by devices such as digital cameras, as well as an electron microscope. The reduction in size of input variables with PCA has an influence on improving the processes of learning data sets, thus increasing the effectiveness of identifying chokeberry fruit powders included in digital pictures, which is shown in the results of the conducted research. The effectiveness of image recognition is presented by classifying abilities, as well as low Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), for which the best results are achieved with a typology of network type Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP). The selected networks type MLP are characterized by the highest degree of classification at 0.99 and RMSE at 0.11 at most at the same time.
