Abstract Quantifying the timing and extent of Quaternary mountain glaciations can help us in understanding the cause of ice-age cycles. As such, impressive achievements have been made in glacial dynamics across many mountain ranges around the world, such as the Himalayas. Yet, the Marine Isotope Stage 6 (MIS 6) glacial histories have not been well determined across the Himalayan regions due to a lack of adequate chronological controls. Here, we present a ¹⁰Be surface-exposure chronology northwest of Mt. Gang Benchhen, Paiku Gangri. Twelve ¹⁰Be exposure-ages show that the outermost hummocky moraine outside of the Laqu Valley was formed around ∼165.7 ka, reflecting the MIS 6 glacial maximum in the central Himalaya. The minimum age constraint is consistent with the low atmospheric CO₂ levels as well as low summer solar insolation intensity at northern high-latitude, which indicate that glaciers in the Laqu Valley culminated during cold climate condition. Also, we identified a potential correlation between the MIS 6 glacial advance in the central Himalaya and Heinrich-like event. We thus hypothesize that there seems to be a response of Himalayan glaciers to the combined forcing of the boreal summer solar insolation intensities, atmospheric CO₂ concentrations, and North Atlantic climate oscillations during the MIS 6 glaciation.

Abstract Heavy metals and metalloids (HMMs) inhibit the biodegradation of organic pollutants. The degree of inhibition depends not only on the concentration and bioavailability of HMMs but also on additional factors, such as environmental variables (e.g., inorganic components, organic matter, pH, and redox potential), the nature of the metals, and microbial species. Based on the degradation pattern and metal concentrations causing half biodegradation rate reductions (RC50s), the inhibition of biodegradation was: Hg

Abstract Recently, it has been reported that the skyrmion Hall effect can be suppressed in an elliptical skyrmion-based device. Given that defects are unavoidable in materials, it is necessary and important to investigate the dynamics of an elliptical skyrmion in a defective racetrack device. In this work, the current-driven dynamics of an elliptical skyrmion in a defective racetrack device are systematically studied using micromagnetic simulations. The system energy analysis reveals that the magnetic parameters of the circular defect play critical roles in determining the type (repulsive or attractive) and the magnitude of the force on the elliptical skyrmion. The simulated trajectories show that the primary motion modes of the elliptical skyrmion in the defective racetrack can be divided into four types, which are dependent on the values of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) constant

Abstract Water possesses unique advantages, including abundance, environmental friendliness and mild effects. Undoubtedly, it is an ideal solvent or reagent in chemical syntheses. Water also shows unique abilities in catalytic asymmetric synthesis. It can accelerate reaction rates, improve diastereo- or enantioselectivities, initiate reactions, diversify chemo, diastereo- or enantioselectivities through various effects (hydrophobic, hydrogen bonding, protonation). Several reviews have demonstrated the positive effects of water in asymmetric synthesis. In this review, we summarize water-enabling strategies in the last decade, and focus on advances which reveal how water affects a reaction.

Abstract DEAD-box helicases are important players in mitochondrial gene expression, which is necessary for mitochondrial respiration. In this study, we characterized Schizosaccharomyces pombe Mss116 (spMss116), a member of the family of DEAD-box RNA helicases. Deletion of spmss116 in a mitochondrial intron-containing background significantly reduced the levels of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded cox1 and cob1 mRNAs and impaired mitochondrial translation, leading to a severe respiratory defect and a loss of cell viability during stationary phase. Deletion of mitochondrial introns restored the levels of cox1 and cob1 mRNAs to wide-type (WT) levels but could not restore mitochondrial translation and respiration in Δspmss116 cells. Furthermore, deletion of spmss116 in both mitochondrial intron-containing and intronless backgrounds impaired mitoribosome assembly and destabilization of mitoribosomal proteins. Our findings suggest that defective mitochondrial translation caused by deletion of spmss116 is most likely due to impaired mitoribosome assembly.
