Abstract Recently, scholars have been increasing concerned about microplastics (MPs). Unfortunately, information is lacking on the spatial distribution patterns of MPs in coastal seas; therefore, our understanding of the extent of offshore MP contamination remains incomplete. MP distribution in the seawater and surface sediments of an aquaculture area (AA), artificial reef area (AR), and comprehensive effect area (CEA) in Haizhou Bay were investigated in this study. The results showed that the mean abundances of MPs in the surface, middle and bottom seawater were 6.98 ± 3.01 n/m

Abstract Sediment samples were collected from nine sites of three sections, in the intertidal zone of Haizhou bay in July 2018. The abundance and characteristics of microplastics in the sediments (and ragworms within the sediments) were then determined to identify the source of microplastics in ragworms, and to explore the effects of ragworms on microplastics in sediment. The average abundance of microplastics in tidal flat sediments was (0.49±0.17) n·g

Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are widely found in the ocean and cause a serious risk to marine organisms. However, fewer studies have been conducted on benthic organisms. This study conducted a case study on the pollution characteristics of MPs on 16 marine benthic organisms in Haizhou Bay, and analyzed the effects of habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode on the MPs pollution characters. The results showed that MPs were detected in all 16 organisms with an average abundance of 8.84 ± 9.14 items/individual, which is in the middle-high level in the international scale. Among the detected MPs, the main material was cellophane. This study showed that benthic organisms can be used as indicator organisms for MPs pollution. MPs in organisms can be affected by their habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode. Comprehensive analysis of MPs in benthic organisms will contribute to fully understand the characterization and source resolution of MPs pollution.

Abstract Since 1990s, harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Kareniaceae, primarily caused by species of Karenia and Karlodinium and rarely by Takayama species, have been substantially increasing in frequency and duration in the coastal waters of China. In this study, we recorded a bloom of high abundance of T. acrotrocha in the Haizhou Bay, the Yellow Sea in September 2020, which is the first record of a Takayama bloom in the temperate coastal waters of China. We found that high concentrations of DON and DOP accelerated the proliferation of T. acrotrocha in the Haizhou Bay. Intensive mariculture, and terrestrial nitrogen and phosphorus input may be responsible for the eutrophication in the Haizhou Bay featuring high concentrations of DON and DOP, and high DIN/DIP ratios. The results suggested that, under ocean warming, the HABs of Kareniaceae are becoming increasingly dominant in eutrophic temperate coasts with intensive mariculture activities.

Abstract With the rapid marine economic development, the problem of the marine ecological environment has become progressively prominent. Mariculture monitoring plays an essential role in sustaining ecological stability, rational planning, and green economic development of sea areas. Using the Landsat image, the raft-mariculture area information of Haizhou Bay and its adjacent southern waters were extracted by the object-oriented classification method based on remote sensing techniques. Landscape pattern index and principal component analysis were used to analyze the spatiotemporal expansion and structural changes of mariculture areas, and to quantify the effects of natural, socio-economic factors on the spatiotemporal variations of mariculture areas. This study discusses the correlation between the mariculture area and the outbreak scale of Enteromorpha Enteromorpha green tide. Results show that the object-oriented classification method has the highest accuracy, with total classification accuracy and Kappa coefficient of more than 90% and 0.79, respectively. The total area, patch density, and landscape shape index of mariculture areas in Haizhou Bay increase yearly, which demonstrates that the heterogeneity and fragmentation increase with the expansion of the mariculture area. The landscape pattern changes in the mariculture area are predominantly impacted by annual mean sea surface temperature (SST), annual average wind speed, social development level, and population density, etc. The larger the area of raft-aquaculture, the wider the outbreak scale of the Enteromorpha prolifera disaster. Study results can provide scientific references for the further development of mariculture in Haizhou Bay and marine environmental protection.

Abstract Global microplastic (MP) pollution is a serious environmental problem that has been found in various ecosystems, especially marine ecosystems. In this study, the water (surface, middle and bottom water), sediment and fish (pelagic, demersal and benthic fish) in the artificial reef area and adjacent waters in Haizhou Bay were collected, and the mechanism of MP transmission among the three media was analyzed. The results showed that >96 % of the plastics in the region were MPs. The shape of MPs was mainly fibrous (water (73.3 %), sediment (56 %), fish (95.3 %)), color was mainly blue (water (49.3 %), sediment (47 %), fish (72.3 %)), and the material was mainly PET (water (39.6 %), sediment (33 %), fish (86.6 %)). We found that, except for the natural deposition of MPs, MPs could be ingested by pelagic fish and transmitted through vertical movement in the water, while there was an interaction between MPs in benthic fishes and the middle-bottom waters. In addition, as relevant variables, body length and body weight were more likely to explain the number of MPs ingested by fishes than were δ

Abstract Plastic pollution has become a threat to the global marine environment. Many studies have shown that marine organisms are at risk of plastic ingestion, but there is still a lack of relevant research in the artificial reef area and adjacent waters of Haizhou Bay, located in the western Yellow Sea. The study of MPs will provide useful information for MPs pollution in the artificial reef food webs, as well as the understanding of MPs trophic transfer by reef fish. In this study, we quantified plastic ingestion by marine fish in artificial reef areas and adjacent waters (Natural area, NA; Aquaculture area, AA; Estuary area, EA; Artificial reefs area, AR and Comprehensive effective area, CEA) and analysed the related possible influencing factors. Of the 146 fish samples examined, 100% of fish ingested plastics, and 98.9% of these particles were microplastics (MPs) (<5 mm), with 3.00 ± 2.63 pieces/fish. The main types and colours of MPs were fibre (95.9%) and blue (84%). The MP quantity of AR and AA were significantly higher than that of CEA (P < 0.05) and there is no significant difference among other habitats. The MP ingestion by pelagic fishes was significantly lower than that of demersal fishes (P < 0.05). MP ingestion by omnivores was significantly higher than that by carnivores and planktivores (P < 0.05). The body length (body weight) of four species (Larimichthys polyactis: 17.7-16.7 cm (16.01-59.41 g); Collichthys lucidus: 8.1-14.3 cm (19.65-56.92 g); Tridentiger barbatus: 5.9-9.2 cm (3.37-19.1 g); Cynoglossus joyneri: 10.1-18.7 cm (5-45 g)) had no significant correlation with MP ingestion (P > 0.05). Our results showed that MPs in this region are ubiquitous (i.e., the MP ingestion rate was as high as 100%). We infer that there is a transfer mechanism in MPs from pelagic to benthic fish in this area, and there is weak biomagnification with the trophic transfer of the food chain (TMF = 1.62). However, more practical studies still need to verify whether MPs are actually transferred to humans through trophic transfer from the marine food web.

Abstract The set-net fishery resources in Haizhou Bay, China have been over-exploited because of overfishing and environmental deterioration. To better understand the current situations and the development trends of fishery resources, the temporal change of biological characteristics and community compositions were analyzed from 2011 to 2018. Meanwhile, we evaluated the impact of the summer moratorium of marine fishing (SMMF) on the set-net fishery. Results show that the mean total length of the six principal species showed varying degrees of decreasing trends, while the changing patterns for the mean weight proportion of the six groups varied. For the whole communities, the similarities of the inter-annual community diversities and compositions were high. SMMF is meaningful to help reproductive success and support recruitment. Every year, the catch per unit efforts of the six principal species after SMMF were significantly higher than before SMMF except for Octopus ocellatus. The target groups showed a higher mean weight proportion after SMMF than before SMMF in eight years, while the non-target groups were converse. Therefore, the resources of the set-net fishery are changing in the study periods; and SMMF is an important factor influencing biological characteristics and community structure. Despite some challenges, SMMF is still one of the most appropriate policy tools to protect the set-net fishery resources under the reality of China.

Abstract To address the pollution problem of acid mine drainage (AMD) characterized by high concentrations of Fe 2+ , Mn 2+ , and SO 4 2− , a combination of coal gangue (CG) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was employed. The effects of coal-gangue dosage, SRB inoculation concentration, and temperature on AMD treatment with coal-gangue-loaded SRB were determined through single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) experiments. By considering the principles of adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, and reduction kinetics, the removal mechanisms of SO 4 2− , Fe 2+ , and Mn 2+ in AMD using coal gangue-loaded SRB in the the Haizhou open-pit mine was revealed. The results showed that the overall effectiveness of the four types of coal-gangue-loaded SRB in repairing AMD was as follows: 3# CG-loaded SRB > 2# CG-loaded SRB > 1# CG-loaded SRB > 4# CG-loaded SRB, with coal-gangue-loaded SRB in the the Haizhou open-pit mine showing the best performance. According to the RSM test, the optimum conditions for repairing AMD with coal-gangue-loaded SRB in the open-pit mine were a coal-gangue dosage of 52 g, SRB inoculation concentration of 11.7%, and temperature of 33.4 °C. The order of factors affecting the removal of SO 4 2− and Fe 2+ from AMD by SRB loaded on coal gangue was SRB inoculation concentration > temperature > coal-gangue dosage. For Mn 2+ , the order of influence was temperature > SRB inoculation concentration > coal-gangue dosage. In the process of repairing Fe 2+ with coal-gangue-loaded SRB in the the Haizhou open-pit mine, the biological activity metabolism of SRB played a leading role, while the adsorption isotherm of Mn 2+ followed the Freundlich model. The adsorption kinetics of coal-gangue-loaded SRB in the the Haizhou open-pit mine for Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ in AMD conformed to Lagergren’s second-order kinetic model, while the reduction kinetics of SO 4 2− conformed to a first-order reaction model.
