Abstract Advances in the knowledge of the neuroendocrine system are closely related to the development of cellular imaging and labeling techniques. This synergy ranges from the staining techniques that allowed the first characterizations of the anterior pituitary gland, its relationship with the hypothalamus, and the birth of neuroendocrinology; through the development of fluorescence microscopy applications, specific labeling strategies, transgenic systems, and intracellular calcium sensors that enabled the study of processes and dynamics at the cellular and tissue level; until the advent of super-resolution microscopy, miniscopes, optogenetics, fiber photometry, and other imaging methods that allowed high spatiotemporal resolution and long-term three-dimensional cellular activity recordings in living systems in a conscious and freely moving condition. In this review, we briefly summarize the main contributions of cellular imaging techniques that have allowed relevant advances in the field of neuroendocrinology and paradigm shifts that have improved our understanding of the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary axes. The development of these methods and equipment is the result of the integration of knowledge achieved by the integration of several disciplines and effort to solve scientific questions and problems of high impact on health and society that this system entails.

Abstract Vascular diseases are the underlying pathology in many life-threatening illnesses. Human cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in angiogenesis are complex and difficult to study in current 2D in vitro and in vivo animal models. Engineered 3D in vitro models that incorporate human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) derived endothelial cells (ECs) and supportive biomaterials within a dynamic microfluidic platform provide a less expensive, more controlled, and reproducible platform to better study angiogenic processes in response to external chemical or physical stimulus. Current studies to develop 3D in vitro angiogenesis models aim to establish single-source systems by incorporating hPSC-ECs into biomimetic extracellular matrices (ECM) and microfluidic devices to create a patient-specific, physiologically relevant platform that facilitates preclinical study of endothelial cell-ECM interactions, vascular disease pathology, and drug treatment pharmacokinetics. This review provides a detailed description of the current methods used for the directed differentiation of human stem cells to endothelial cells and their use in engineered 3D in vitro angiogenesis models that have been developed within the last 10 years.

Abstract Property prediction is a key interest in chemistry. For several decades there has been a continued and incremental development of mathematical models to predict properties. As more data is generated and accumulated, there seems to be more areas of opportunity to develop models with increased accuracy. The same is true if one considers the large developments in machine and deep learning models. However, along with the same areas of opportunity and development, issues and challenges remain and, with more data, new challenges emerge such as the quality and quantity and reliability of the data, and model reproducibility. Herein, we discuss the status of the accuracy of predictive models and present the authors' perspective of the direction of the field, emphasizing on good practices. We focus on predictive models of bioactive properties of small molecules relevant for drug discovery, agrochemical, food chemistry, natural product research, and related fields.

Abstract The present study evaluated the performance of the fungus Trichoderma reesei to tolerate and biodegrade the herbicide diuron in its agrochemical presentation in agar plates, liquid culture, and solid-state fermentation. The tolerance of T. reesei to diuron was characterized through a non-competitive inhibition model of the fungal radial growth on the PDA agar plate and growth in liquid culture with glucose and ammonium nitrate, showing a higher tolerance to diuron on the PDA agar plate (inhibition constant 98.63 mg L

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic that we are currently suffering bears important similitudes to the Ebola epidemic that shook Western Africa in 2013-2016. This article aims to highlight and analyse the common grounds of both crises, highlighting their sudden appearance, the fact that both diseases qualify as «caregiver´s diseases» and that they were faced with an important lack of resources. Once these structural vulnerabilities have been highlighted, this article proposes some points of systemic reinforcement, concerning both the national healthcare systems’ capacities and the international level, paying especial attention to the role of the WHO and of the International Health Regulations.

Abstract Auto-labeling is one of the main challenges in 3D vehicle detection. Auto-labeled datasets can be used to identify objects in LiDAR data, which is a challenging task due to the large size of the dataset. In this work, we propose a novel methodology to generate new 3D based auto-labeling datasets with a different point of view setup than the one used in most recognized datasets (KITTI, WAYMO, etc.). The performance of the methodology has been further demonstrated with the development of our own dataset with the auto-generated labels and tested under boundary conditions on a bridge in a fixed position. The proposed methodology is based on the YOLO model trained with the KITTI dataset. From a camera-LiDAR sensor fusion, it is intended to auto-label new datasets while maintaining the consistency of the ground truth. The performance of the model, with respect to the manually labeled KITTI images, achieves an F-Score of 0.957, 0.927 and 0.740 in the easy, moderate and hard images of the dataset. The main contribution of this work is a novel methodology to auto-label autonomous driving datasets using YOLO as the main labeling system. The proposed methodology is tested under boundary conditions and the results show that this approximation can be easily adapted to a wide variety of problems when labeled datasets are not available.
