    Abstract Objective: To examine the association between menopause hormone therapy (MHT) and physical performance among women from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.
    Study design: Cross-sectional study of 12,506 postmenopausal Canadian women.
    Main outcome measures: Grip strength (kg), gait speed (m/s), timed up and go (s), chair rise (s), and balance (s) were assessed following standard procedures. The association between MHT and physical performance was evaluated using linear regression models adjusted for age, education, study site, smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, and hysterectomy.     Results: Compared with those who never used MHT, prior or current use was associated with better performance on the timed up and go test (β: -0.19; 95%CI: -0.28; -0.11) and faster gait speed (β = 0.01, 95%CI = 0.00; 0.02). No association was found for grip strength, balance, and chair rise. Results did not change by body mass index, physical activity, or duration of MHT use. When stratified by age at study visit, the effect remained significant only in among those aged 65 years or more. Starting MHT <5 years after menopause was associated with better physical performance.
    Conclusions: MHT was associated with better physical performance in gait speed and timed up and go tests. The cross-sectional design of the study limits causal interpretation. Prospective studies are needed to confirm our results.

    Abstract (1) Background: Infections are a main cause of morbidity and mortality among burn patients. The spectrum of microorganisms depends on the epidemiological context and treatment practices. We aimed to describe the evolution of microbial flora colonizing burn wounds among patients hospitalized during 15 or more days at the National Burn Center in 2015. (2) Methods: Demographic data, length of stay, total body surface area burn, and status at discharge were collected from electronic records and culture results from the laboratory database. (3) Results: Among 98 included patients, 87 were colonized. The mean length of stay was 39 days overall and 16 days in the ICU.

    Abstract We propose a numerical approach to study mesoscopic fluctuations in quantum dots with chiral symmetry. Our method involves applying the random-hopping model to a tight-binding Hamiltonian, allowing us to calculate the conductance and shot-noise power distributions for systems belonging to the three chiral symmetry classes of random matrix theory. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the spectral fluctuations of quantum dots belonging to the Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes of random matrix theory can be obtained by applying the random-hopping model to a scattering region that was originally integrable, thus bypassing the need to use the boundaries of chaotic billiards.

    Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD), a pressing global health issue, affects millions and leads to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Hemodialysis (HD) is a crucial treatment for ESRD, yet its limited efficiency in removing protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) results in high morbidity and mortality rates. A high affinity of pharmaceutical drugs for human serum albumin (HSA) can be leveraged to compete effectively with PBUTs for the same HSA binding sites, thereby enabling them to be capable of displacing these toxins. One such drug is ibuprofen (IBF), known for its very high affinity for HSA and sharing the same binding site as indoxyl sulfate (IS). This study explores the development of IBF-immobilized cellulose acetate-based (CA-based) thin films. The films were created by reacting CA with IBF-modified silica precursors at varying concentrations.     Abstract The objective of this systematic review is to analyze the diagnostic accuracy of rapid dengue diagnostic tests. The search was conducted in the following databases: LILACS, Medline (Pubmed), CRD, The Cochrane Library, Trip Medical Database and Google Scholar. ELISA and PCR assays were adopted as reference methods. Thirty-four articles were included in this systematic review. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and Forest Plot were performed to evaluate sensitivity and specificity for each parameter analyzed (NS1, IgM and IgG). The results revealed that the combined analysis of the IgM antibody with the NS1 antigen resulted in greater sensitivity than the isolated analysis of IgM. The three analytes together showed the best performance, with a combined sensitivity of 90 % (95 % CI: 89-92 %) using ELISA as a comparator. Thus, the present review provides relevant knowledge for decision-making between the available rapid diagnostic tests.

    Abstract Background: Adequacy of learning models and their ability to engage students and match session's objectives are critical factors in achieving the desired outcome. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we assess the methodological approach, content, and effectiveness of training initiatives addressing medical students' knowledge, attitudes, confidence and discrimination perception towards LGBTQIA + people.
    Method: PubMed, Web of Science, Medline and Scopus were searched to identify published studies, from 2013 to 2023, on effectiveness of training initiatives addressing medical students' knowledge, attitudes, confidence and discrimination perception towards LGBTQIA + people. The risk of bias of the selected studies was assessed by the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument. Overall effect sizes were calculated using a Mantel-Haenszel method, fixed effect meta-analyses.
    Results: A total of 22 studies were included, representing 2,164 medical students. The interventions were highly diverse and included seminars, lectures, videos, real-case discussions, roleplay, and group discussions with people from the LGBTQIA + community. After the interventions, there was a significant improvement in self-confidence and comfort interacting with patients and in the understanding of the unique and specific health concerns experienced by LGBTQIA + patients.
    Conclusion: Our findings indicated that the outcomes of interventions training actions for medical students that promote knowledge and equity regarding LGBTQIA + people, regardless of their scope, methodology and duration, result in a considerable increase in students' self-confidence and comfort interacting with LGBTQIA + patients, highlight the need for more actions and programs in this area promoting a more inclusive society and greater equity.

    Abstract We investigate the critical behavior of the two-dimensional spin-1 Baxter-Wu model in the presence of a crystal-field coupling Δ with the goal of determining the universality class of transitions along the second-order part of the transition line as one approaches the putative location of the multicritical point. We employ extensive Monte Carlo simulations using two different methodologies: (i) a study of the zeros of the energy probability distribution, closely related to the Fisher zeros of the partition function, and (ii) the well-established multicanonical approach employed to study the probability distribution of the crystal-field energy. A detailed finite-size scaling analysis in the regime of second-order phase transitions in the (Δ,T) phase diagram supports previous claims that the transition belongs to the universality class of the four-state Potts model. For positive values of Δ, we observe the presence of strong finite-size effects, indicative of crossover effects due to the proximity of the first-order part of the transition line. Finally, we demonstrate how a combination of cluster and heat-bath updates allows one to equilibrate larger systems, and we demonstrate the potential of this approach for resolving the ambiguities observed in the regime of Δ≳0.
