Abstract Richard M. Suinn, an eminent psychologist known for his work in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), sports psychology, ethnic minority issues, and professional association leadership, passed away on January 5, 2024, in Fort Collins, Colorado, at the age of 90 years. Suinn was born on May 8, 1933, in Hawai'i. Suinn was an expert in anxiety management and developed the widely used Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale. He was the first psychologist appointed team psychologist to a U.S. Olympic team, applying his CBT expertise to five Olympic teams. Suinn developed the Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation Scale, the most widely used measure of Asian American acculturation. He served as a president of the American Psychological Association (APA) where he opened the door for APA presidents of color, and the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) and a member of the Board of Directors of APA, the American Psychological Foundation, American Board of Professional Psychology, Association for the Advancement of Psychology, ABCT, and the Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA). Abstract Transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) holds great promise for treating a broad spectrum of hematological disorders including cancer. However, the limited number of HSCs in a single hUCB unit restricts its widespread use. Although extensive efforts have led to multiple methods for ex vivo expansion of human HSCs by targeting single molecules or pathways, it remains unknown whether it is possible to simultaneously manipulate the large number of targets essential for stem cell self-renewal. Recent studies indicate that N

Abstract An 11 year old female-neutered Labrador presented for facial swelling. Clinicopathological abnormalities included hyperglobulinemia, azotemia, hypercalcemia, nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and spurious hypoglycemia. Normoglycemia was subsequently confirmed using a cage-side analyzer (AlphaTRAK, Zoetis, UK). Serum and urine protein electrophoresis documented monoclonal (immunoglobulin M) gammopathy with Bence-Jones proteinuria. Computed tomography imaging revealed a monostotic osteolytic bone-lesion, and bone marrow cytology and histopathology documented plasmacytosis with multiple myeloma oncogene 1 / interferon regulatory factor 4 positivity, consistent with multiple myeloma. Infectious disease testing initially indicated seropositivity for Leishmania, Borrelia, and Anaplasma spp.; however, Leishmania PCR (splenic and bone marrow aspirates), and paired serological titers for Borrelia and Anaplasma were negative. Consequently, initial serological results were considered to be false positive because of paraproteinemia-associated assay interference. Chemotherapy (prednisolone and melphalan combination therapy) was initiated, but the dog was euthanased 30 days later because of the development of pericardial effusion. This is a report of spurious serological (and other laboratory) results occurring secondary to monoclonal gammopathy in a dog.

Abstract While most detailed analyses of antibiotic resistance plasmids focus on those found in clinical isolates, less is known about the vast environmental reservoir of mobile genetic elements and the resistance and virulence factors they encode. We selectively isolated three strains of cefotaxime-resistant Escherichia coli from a wastewater-impacted coastal wetland. The cefotaxime-resistant phenotype was transmissible to a lab strain of E. coli after one hour, with frequencies as high as 10

Abstract Global spread of antimicrobial multidrug resistance (MDR) in human and veterinary medicine relies upon diagnostics, surveillance and stewardship to guide mitigation. Utilizing surveillance of fecal samples from our service area for detecting MDR Escherichia coli carriage in humans (2143), dogs (627), and cattle (130), we found isolates resistant to third/fourth generation cephems present in 3.7 %, 13.1 %, and 51.5 %, respectively. CMY-2, CTX-M-15-like and CTX-M9 group genes in descending order were predominant in all hosts and accounted for 83.3 % of non-wild-type gene targets. MDR carriage mirrored cephem non-susceptibility rates as published in annual antibiograms for humans and dogs; notably, no carbapenem-resistant carriage isolates were detected. Given the scale of MDR E. coli carriage in cattle (14X) and dogs (3.5X) compared to humans, bench-marking of the resistance gene pool by host species utilizing regional One Health surveillance may aid in assessing occupational and geographic risks for acquiring resistance and for monitoring of mitigation strategies.

Abstract On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85_{-14}^{+21}  M_{⊙} and 66_{-18}^{+17}  M_{⊙} (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of being below 65  M_{⊙}. We calculate the mass of the remnant to be 142_{-16}^{+28}  M_{⊙}, which can be considered an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH). The luminosity distance of the source is 5.3_{-2.6}^{+2.4}  Gpc, corresponding to a redshift of 0.82_{-0.34}^{+0.28}. The inferred rate of mergers similar to GW190521 is 0.13_{-0.11}^{+0.30}  Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}.

Abstract: ... Zoetis, UK). Serum and urine protein electrophoresis documented monoclonal (immunoglobulin M) gammopathy ...

Abstract Abstract An 11 year old female‐neutered Labrador presented for facial swelling. Clinicopathological abnormalities included hyperglobulinemia, azotemia, hypercalcemia, nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and spurious hypoglycemia. Normoglycemia was subsequently confirmed using a cage‐side analyzer (AlphaTRAK, Zoetis, UK). Serum and urine protein electrophoresis documented monoclonal (immunoglobulin M) gammopathy with Bence‐Jones proteinuria. Computed tomography imaging revealed a monostotic osteolytic bone‐lesion, and bone marrow cytology and histopathology documented plasmacytosis with multiple myeloma oncogene 1 / interferon regulatory factor 4 positivity, consistent with multiple myeloma. Infectious disease testing initially indicated seropositivity for Leishmania, Borrelia, and Anaplasma spp.; however, Leishmania PCR (splenic and bone marrow aspirates), and paired serological titers for Borrelia and Anaplasma were negative. Consequently, initial serological results were considered to be false positive because of paraproteinemia‐associated assay interference. Chemotherapy (prednisolone and melphalan combination therapy) was initiated, but the dog was euthanased 30 days later because of the development of pericardial effusion. This is a report of spurious serological (and other laboratory) results occurring secondary to monoclonal gammopathy in a dog.
