    Abstract Glaucoma, particularly primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), poses a significant global health concern. Distinguished by intraocular pressure (IOP), POAG encompasses high-tension glaucoma (HTG) and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a multifaceted protein with roles in lipid metabolism, neurobiology, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, controversies persist regarding the impact of APOE single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on open-angle glaucoma and NTG. This study aimed to identify APOE-specific SNPs influencing NTG risk. A cohort of 178 patients with NTG recruited from Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital and 32,858 individuals from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) cohort were included in the analysis. Genotype and haplotype analyses were performed on three promoter SNPs (rs449647, rs769446, and rs405509) and two exonic SNPs (rs429358 and rs7412) located on chromosome 19. Among the five SNPs, rs769446 genotypes exhibited significant differences between cases and controls. The minor allele C of rs769446 emerged as a protective factor against NTG. Furthermore, haplotype analysis of the five SNPs revealed that the A-T-G-T-T haplotype was a statistically significant risk factor for NTG. This study indicated an association between APOE promoter SNPs and NTG in the Korean population. Further studies are required to understand how APOE promoter SNPs contribute to NTG pathogenesis.

    Abstract This study aims to examine the relationship between intrapersonal factors, interpersonal factors, smartphone screen time, and the moderating roles of interpersonal factors, on the basis of the ecological model. This study is a cross-sectional and descriptive study. A total of 428 participants from four public middle schools were selected through convenience sampling (55.1% female; Mean age 13.0 ± 0.78).     Abstract Ir(triNHC) complexes catalyzed glycerol and alcohol dehydrogenative coupling, yielding diverse α-hydroxy acids. Unlike conventional conditions, Ir(triNHC) facilitated additional C-C bond formation after lactic acid production from glycerol, exhibiting high TOFs.     Abstract Background: With the outbreak of COVID-19, school closures and quarantines following social distancing have brought significant changes to children's lifestyles. Therefore, we aimed to compare the population-adjusted incidence of febrile seizures(FS) and epilepsy before and after the COVID-19 outbreak in Korea and to assess the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on the incidence by region and age group. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using nationwide claims data and covid data from January 2019 to December 2020. The incidence of diseases and difference in incidence before (Jan 20 to Dec 30, 2019) and after (Jan 20 to Dec 30, 2020) the COVID-19 outbreak was measured using rate ratio. An Interrupted time series analysis was used to identify the effect of COVID-19 on trends of FS and epilepsy. Subgroup analysis by age, sex, insurance, and risk of coronavirus by area were conducted. Results: Following the onset of the pandemic, the number of newly diagnosed FS cases decreased sharply by 69 % (24,182 to 7238), whereas the incidence of epilepsy, increased to 1.02 times (30,286−29,312), when adjusted in proportion to the population. Notably, a greater decrease in the incidence of FS were found in the regions with high-risk of coronavirus. A result of segmented regression analysis proved the decrease was significant and made immediately after the pandemic started(p < 0.001). In contrast to the incidence of FS, that of epilepsy did not exhibit a significant month-to-month change during the baseline period, immediately after the pandemic started, and during the pandemic. Conclusions: The COVID-19 outbreak and resulting social distancing measures reduced the incidence of febrile seizure immediately rather than gradually. Unlike in the case of acute febrile seizure, the COVID-19 pandemic had no effect on the incidence of chronic epilepsy.

    Abstract Purpose: Research on the interaction between renal and lung functions has been conducted; however, studies on the general adult population are limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum creatinine levels and pulmonary function in Korean adults.
    Methods: From the 2016-2019 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we recruited 11,380 participants who were 40 years or older for this study. Serum creatinine levels were divided into three groups: low, normal, and high. Pulmonary function was divided into three groups: normal, restrictive, and obstructive. The odds ratios for abnormal pulmonary function patterns were calculated using weighted multinomial logistic regression analysis.
    Results: The odds ratios were 0.97 for low vs. normal (0.40-2.33) and 2.00 for high vs. normal (1.18-3.38) for the restrictive pattern, and 0.12 for low vs. normal (0.02-0.49) and 1.74 for high vs. normal (0.90-3.35) for the obstructive pattern after being adjusted for age, sex, smoking status, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, body mass index, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, total energy, and total proteins.
    Conclusion: High serum creatinine levels were associated with an increased odds ratio for restrictive and obstructive pulmonary function patterns. The odds ratio of the restrictive pattern was higher than that of the obstructive pattern. Screening for abnormal pulmonary function in individuals with high serum creatinine levels may be useful to ensure that there is no abnormal pulmonary function before the onset of potential pulmonary problems. Thus, this study highlights the relationship between renal and pulmonary function using serum creatine levels, which can be easily tested in the primary medical environment of the general population.

    Abstract This study aims to examine the relationship between intrapersonal factors, interpersonal factors, smartphone screen time, and the moderating roles of interpersonal factors, on the basis of the ecological model. This study is a cross-sectional and descriptive study. A total of 428 participants from four public middle schools were selected through convenience sampling (55.1% female; Mean age 13.0 ± 0.78). Data were collected through self-report questionnaires that contained questions about sociodemographic characteristics, intrapersonal factors (types of smartphone use, Fear of missing out—FoMO), interpersonal factors (support from parents, teachers, and peers), and smartphone screen time. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression. The daily smartphone screen time was 4.05 ± 2.16 h. Results showed that social media (β = 0.155), games (β = 0.140), and FoMO (β = 0.227) were positively associated with smartphone screen time, while educational videos (β = −0.130) and parental support (β = −0.212) were negatively associated with smartphone screen time. Peers support moderated the association between games and smartphone screen time. Parental support moderated the association between educational videos, videos/movies/TV, and smartphone screen time. The findings highlight the direct and interactive roles of intrapersonal and interpersonal factors in predicting adolescents' smartphone screen time. Based on this study, the intrapersonal and interpersonal factors of adolescents should be comprehensively considered to intervene in their proper smartphone use.
