Abstract Background: COVID-19 created a general challenge to healthcare systems throughout the world and was an important cause of mortality.
Aim: The aim of the present study was to report the general evolution of patients with COVID-19 at a teaching hospital and analyze differences by age group and sex considering mortality rates in the years 2020 and 2021 among patients older than 60 years of age.
Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of COVID-19 confirmed by RT-PCR at the São Jose do Rio Preto university hospital between March 2020 and March 2022. The patients were male and female patients, of varying ages belonging to the region of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, were accommodated in the wards or intensive care units (ICUs). Overall mortality was analyzed for the hospital as well as in the ICUs and wards. This analysis was performed separately in two years considering age group, sex, and main comorbidities in patients older than 60 years of age.
Results: A total of 8032 patients with COVID-19 were hospitalized between March 2020 and March 2022: 2866 patients with 658 deaths (22.92%) in 2020; 4324 patients with 1168 deaths (27.01%) in 2021; and 842 patients with 205 deaths (24.35 %) in 2022 up to the month of March. More than half (53.60%) of the patients were hospitalized in the ICUs and 46.39% were hospitalized in the wards. Differences in the mortality rate were found for the different age groups in the comparison of the years, with more deaths occurring among individuals up to 90 years of age in the second year (p <0.05). Men were affected more and had a higher mortality rate (p <0.0001). The main comorbidities were cardiovascular disease (70.93%), diabetes (37.76%), and obesity (23.68%).
Conclusions: The mortality rate of older people hospitalized with COVID-19 was higher than the average, it was higher in 2021 compared to 2020 and increased with age. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity were the main comorbidities.

Abstract Background and aims – Malanea (Rubiaceae) is a Neotropical genus of ca 40 species, 15 of which occur in Brazil, with nine found in the Atlantic Forest domain. This study aims to present a taxonomic treatment of the species occurring in the Atlantic Forest domain. Material and methods – We studied collections deposited in 15 Brazilian herbaria, ALCB, BHCB, BHZB, CEPEC, HUEFS, HUFU, IPA, JPB, MAC, OUPR, PEUFR, RFA, RB, UFP, and UFRN, and collections in NY were studied online. Specimens were identified using protologues and digital images of types available online. Key results – Of the nine species of Malanea previously recognized in the Atlantic Forest domain, we accepted seven, six of which are endemic. Malanea macrophylla has a wide distribution also occurring in other Brazilian phytogeographic domains, and adjacent countries. We expanded the distribution of four species and identified Bahia as the possible centre of diversity for the group in the domain. In addition, an identification key to the species, detailed descriptions, taxonomic notes, typifications, illustrations, maps of geographic distribution, and assessments of conservation status are provided. The names Malanea evenosa, M. forsteronioides, M. macrophylla, M. martiana, and M. spicata are here typified. The calculated conservation status revealed three Endangered species, two Vulnerable ones, M. forsteronioides as Near Threatened, and M. macrophylla with a status of Least Concern.

Abstract Background: Injectable laryngoplasty with hydroxyapatite and hyaluronic acid is frequently used for the treatment of glottic incompetence. The effectiveness of these substances is controversial due to the heterogeneity of studies.
Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment for glottic incompetence using hydroxyapatite and hyaluronic acid.
Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis.
Data sources: MEDLINE, PUBMED, LILACS, SCOPUS, EMBASE, Cochrane, clinicaltrials.gov, published and unpublished trials, Web of Science.
Eligibility criteria: Studies that evaluated vocal fold function before and after 4-6 weeks and 6 months of hydroxyapatite and hyaluronic acid injection in adults with glottic incompetence.
Exclusion criteria: studies with outcome, follow-up time or type of intervention outside the predetermined pattern or systematic review and meta-analysis.
Synthesis of methods: Primary outcome - Maximum Phonation Time. Secondary outcomes - Voice Handicap Index (VHI)-30, Parameters G and B of GRBAS Scale. Outcomes were analyzed for mean differences with the corresponding 95% CI.
    Results: Six hundred forty-four studies identified, 12 included (5 CaHA; 6 HA; 1 HA and CaHA). After 4-6 weeks the mean difference were: MPT (+5.86), IDV (-39.32), G (-1.14), and B (-1.46). After 6 months: MPT (+5.97), IDV (-30.13), G (-1.33), and B (-1.33).
Limitations: Studies comparing injectable drugs are small, as well as the number of patients in each one, making the isolated comparison of substances difficult.
Conclusions and implications: There is an evidence that the injectable substances HA and CaHA are effective in the treatment of glottic incompetence, however, it is important that more studies are carried out comparing the two substances.

Abstract Objectives: to describe the experience of reopening a Brazilian higher education institution during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: experience report of a step-by-set approach to reopening a nursing higher education institution in São Paulo, Brazil, from May 2020 to May 2021.
Results: the plan was created and operated by a group including students, professors, and technical-administrative workers. Weekly or by-weekly meetings occurred according to changes in the epidemiological situation and the needs to review the local technical and political agreements.
Conclusions: we suggest that reopening plans during the COVID-19 pandemic should be politically and technically legitimated by all members of the community of a higher education institution so that they can take place quickly and sustainably. The early identification of COVID-19 cases and the adoption of local administrative measures are necessary to reduce the risk of outbreaks.

Abstract This is a cost analysis study based on hospital admissions, conducted from the perspective of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), carried out in a cohort of patients hospitalized at the University Hospital of Brasília (UHB) due to Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) caused by COVID-19, from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022. An approach based on macro-costing was used, considering the costs per patient identified in the Hospital Admission Authorizations (HAA). Were identified 1,015 HAA from 622 patients. The total cost of hospitalizations was R$ 2,875,867.18 for 2020 and 2021. Of this total, 86.41 % referred to hospital services and 13.59 % to professional services. The highest median cost per patient identified was for May 2020 (R$ 19,677.81 IQR [3,334.81-33,041.43]), while the lowest was in January 2021 (R$ 1,698.50 IQR [1,602.70-2,224.11]). The high cost of treating patients with COVID-19 resulted in a high economic burden of SARI due to COVID-19 for UHB and, consequently, for SUS.
