Abstract ABSTRACT Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) has been attracting great interest due to the beauty of the colors of flowers, the firmness of stems, and postharvest durability. However, knowledge of lisianthus irrigation and fertigation has generally been based on recommendations from other countries. This study aimed to establish parameters for the rational management of lisianthus fertigation under a protected environment by determining the best lower limit of soil moisture, associated with the determination of the optimal potassium concentration to be maintained in the soil solution. The treatments consisted of five soil moisture limits for the start of irrigation and maintenance of five potassium concentrations in the soil solution, with four replications. Plots of 0.7 by 0.5 m were arranged in a completely randomized block design in a factorial scheme. The soil solution was monitored by measuring moisture as well as potassium (K+) concentrations using a TDR100 reflectometer and solution extractors, respectively, during two cycles. The evaluated variables were the leaf area index, shoot fresh and dry matter, commercial yield, and average stem diameter. Lisianthus cultivation under the lower limit of soil moisture equal to 0.20 cm3 cm−3 ensured the best results for all variables of commercial interest. No effect of potassium concentrations was observed on variables of commercial interest.

Abstract Produced water (PW) is a by-product generated throughout oil exploration. Geological formation and geographical location of the reservoir influence its physical, chemical and biological characteristics. Xanthan gum (XG), an exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by Xanthomonas campestris, has been widely used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology because of its high viscosity, pseudoplastic behavior, stability in function of salinity, temperature and alkaline conditions. The production of XG may be affected by the composition of the PW, where the acetyl and pyruvyl radicals may be present in the mannoses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the composition of XG produced by X. campestris, particularly the amount of Xanthan, acetyl and pyruvyl groups, in culture mediums containing distilled (DW) or produced (PW) water in different concentrations, by means of dispersive Raman spectroscopy (1064 nm). The spectra of XG showed peaks referred to the main constituents of the Xanthan (glucose, mannose and glucuronic acid). Spectral features assigned to pyruvyl were seen in all samples mainly at ~1010 cm⁻¹, with higher intensity when using DW and 25% PW. PCA loadings showed that the peaks assigned to pyruvyl are consistent to presence of sodium pyruvate (~1040/~1050 and ~ 1432 cm⁻¹) and were higher in the samples obtained in 25% PW. ANOVA GLM applied to Raman peaks of interest (~1010 and ~ 1090 cm⁻¹) and to PCA scores (Score 1 to Score 3) showed that both were influenced by the type of water used in the culture medium, where the XG were strongly reduced in the groups PW compared to DW while the pyruvyl content increased proportionally with the concentration of PW. The results suggest that the composition of the water used in the bacteria's culture medium influenced the composition of XG, including the amount of Xanthan and particularly the pyruvyl content, and therefore needs to be considered when using this approach of injecting XG in oil fields as pyruvyl content affects viscosity.

Abstract Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with potentially life threatening cardiovascular complications, including fulminant myocarditis and cardiac tamponade. Optimal management strategies are still unclear, including the role of immunomodulatory therapies and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the context of cardiogenic shock. We report a case of a middle-aged female with COVID-19 who developed respiratory distress and hemodynamic deterioration with elevated troponin levels on the seventh day of symptoms. Echocardiography demonstrated pericardial effusion with diastolic restriction of the right ventricle. Cardiac arrest developed during pericardiocentesis, resulting in emergency thoracotomy and pericardial drainage. Venoarterial ECMO was subsequently initiated due to refractory cardiogenic shock. Tocilizumab, immunoglobulin, methylprednisolone and convalescent plasma were added to supportive care, with progressive recovery of cardiac function and successful weaning from mechanical ventilation. This case highlights the potential role of ECMO, convalescent plasma and immunomodulatory therapies in the management of cardiogenic shock associated with COVID-19 myopericarditis.

Abstract Oil is expected to continue to be one of the most important sources of energy in the world and world's energy matrix for the foreseeable future. However, high demand for energy and the decline of the production of oil fields makes oil recovery a challenge. Most techniques used for the recovery process are expensive, non-sustainable and technically difficult to implement. In this context, microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) represents an attractive alternative. It employs products derived from the metabolism of microorganisms that produce biopolymers. Certain bacteria species (e.g., Xanthomonas campestris) produce polysaccharides (exopolysaccharides - EPS) such as the well-known Xanthan gum (XG). We hypothesized that the use of produced water (PW) water in combination photo-stimulation with laser/LED could influence the production and composition of XG. Raman spectroscopy has been used for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the biochemical composition of XG biopolymer under light stimulation. Abstract Oil is expected to continue to be one of the most important sources of energy in the world and world's energy matrix for the foreseeable future. However, high demand for energy and the decline of the production of oil fields makes oil recovery a challenge. Certain bacteria species (e.g., Xanthomonas campestris) produce polysaccharides (exopolysaccharides – EPS) such as the well-known Xanthan gum (XG). We hypothesized that the use of produced water (PW) water in combination photo-stimulation with laser/LED could influence the production and composition of XG. Raman spectroscopy has been used for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the biochemical composition of XG biopolymer under light stimulation. X. campestris cultures in either distilled water or dialysis-produced water were studied under the absence or presence of laser irradiation (λ = 660 nm, CW, spot size 0.040 cm², 40 mW, 444 s, 8.0 J/cm²) or LED (λ = 630 nm ± 2 nm, CW, spot size 0.50 cm², 140 mW, 500 s, 12 J/cm²). XG produced by these cultures was analyzed by Raman spectroscopy at 1064 nm excitation and subjected to principal component analysis (PCA). Results of the exploratory analysis and ANOVA general linear model (GLM) suggested that the extent of XG and pyruvate (pyruvyl mannose) production was affected differentially in X. campestris when cultured in distilled water plus LED photo-stimulation versus dialysis-produced water plus LED photo-stimulation. XG production increased in the distilled water culture. In contrast, both pyruvate acetyl mannose content went up in the dialysis-water culture. These results open a wide field of opportunities in the use of metal-enriched cultures in combination with photo-biomodulation to direct and optimize bacterial production of compounds (i.e., XG) that may be of great benefit in the implementation of sustainable practices for oil extraction.

Abstract Kounis syndrome (KS) consists of an association between hypersensitivity reactions triggered by various environmental and pharmacological factors and acute coronary syndromes. Blood supply may be compromised by either vasospasm (type I), native plaque destabilization (type II) or stent thrombosis (type III). Although the prognosis is generally favorable, treatment should include aggressive anti-thrombotic and anti-allergic therapies. A case compatible with type III KS, manifested as a macular rash followed by two episodes of stent thrombosis after primary angioplasty (PCI) of the right coronary artery is presented, and complemented by a review on the topic.

Abstract The main aim of this paper is to answer the research question, “Is the Gompertz model suitable for studying the diffusion of the ISO 22000 standard in Europe?” Forecasting models adopting the Gompertz model were developed to estimate to which extent the Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) based on the ISO 22000 standard are expected to be implemented and certified in the European continent. To provide a forecast for the next few years, data from the diffusion of renowned ISO standards, namely, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, were extrapolated in order to overcome the shortcoming since data concerning ISO 22000 certification was only available for the period 2007 to 2018. The results provide a cross-sectional portrayal of the European diffusion of ISO 22000 certification and suggest an interval of the estimated number of certificates issued in Europe. This research paper presents the first attempt to empirically analyze the dynamic of diffusion of the European ISO 22000 certification. A more accurate fitting with real results may be expected with further information available in the forthcoming years.

Abstract The aims of this study were to examine the medium-term effects of previous experiences during early stages of sport development on physical capacities of under-13 (U-13) talented basketball players and, to identify variables that discriminated under-14 (U-14) national team training camp selection. Anthropometrical and physical measurements were collected during a basketball training camp. Previous sport experiences (6-10 years), maturity offset, power outputs for jumping and sprinting were determined. A cluster analysis was used to allocate the subjects according to their different levels of sport experiences (more specialized vs. less specialized) to allow creating a dummy variable for the subsequent analysis of the physical variables. A stepwise discriminant analysis was computed to identify the construct that best classifies selected and non-selected players for U-14 national team training camp. The less specialized group outscored more specialized in all physical parameters, irrespectively of gender. The Abalakov Jump Peak Power and Predicted Adult Height (PAH) could successfully discriminate selected from non-selected players for U-14 national team training camp in boys and PAHin girls. The diversified and non-specific sport stimulus during early ages seem to be determinant to the acquisition and development of fundamental movement skills of talented basketball players.
