Abstract Marine fisheries are undeniably important to Taiwan in terms of economic development and industrial strategies. In the past 10 years, Taiwan’s fishery GDP accounted for 14% to 21% of all agriculture, forestry, fishery, and animal husbandry, which is higher than both animal husbandry and forestry. Since the domestic population structure of Taiwan has changed, the domestic fishery industrial labor force has gradually been replaced by migrant fishing workers. The issue of migrant fishing workers’ protection has received attention from non-governmental organizations, and cross-national recruitment administration has become the greatest challenge faced by Taiwan’s authority. Therefore, this paper describes the necessary protection of the labor conditions and interests of migrant fishermen by analyzing their status and human rights protection in the historical development of Taiwan’s marine fisheries. In addition, considering the well-being of migrant fishing workers, this paper conducts a feasibility assessment on the operation of the “Nan-Fang-Ao Fishermen’s Hostel” at the Nan-Fang-Ao Fishing Harbor and illustrates the urgent need to re-examine the migrant fishing workers’ protection. This paper suggests that the government agencies should actively advise employers to accept migrant fishermen’s requests for better living environments onshore and guarantee basic living conditions.

Abstract Gold–Cu skarn deposits are characterized by a diverse mineral assemblage, whose in-situ major/trace elements and isotope compositions can provide key constraints to the migration and enrichment of Au during hydrothermal processes. The Yi’nan Tongjing Au–Cu deposit is located in the central part of the Luxi district, and both skarn and Au–Cu ore bodies occur at the contact between the Early Cretaceous diorite porphyry and the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian carbonate rocks. Five stages of mineralization were identified: 1) early skarn (garnet–diopside–wollastonite); 2) late skarn (magnetite–epidote–actinolite±tremolite); 3) oxide (specularite–hematite); 4) sulfide (pyrite–chalcopyrite–sphalerite–quartz–chlorite); and 5) late quartz–calcite. The mineralization process in the Tongjing Au-Cu deposit was revealed by detailed scanning electron microscope-backscattered electron imaging, electron probe microanalysis, in-situ trace element, sulfur and lead isotope analysis. Magnetite is enriched in chalcophile elements (Cu, Zn, Pb), Co and Ni, probably due to hydrothermal overprint. The substitution of As and other elements in the formation of pyrite is conducive to the entry of Au into pyrite. The increase of Se and As contents in pyrite from stage IVa to IVb indicates that the temperature, salinity and oxygen fugacity of the ore-forming fluid decrease while the pH rises, resulting in the unloading of Au. The temperature of Au mineralization based on the Se content in pyrite does not exceed 300°C. Furthermore, V positively correlated with Ti and Ni/Cr ratios ≥1 in magnetite and most Co/Ni ratios in pyrite >10 all confirm their hydrothermal origins. The restricted sulfur (δ34SV-CDT = −0.5–1.2‰; mean = 0.4‰) and lead (206Pb/204Pb = 17.323–17.383; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.424–15.452; 208Pb/204Pb = 37.367–37.454) isotopic compositions suggest that the deep magma provided the primary mineralized material, accompanied by a relatively small amount of shallow crustal material. The Yi’nan Tongjing Au–Cu skarn deposit was formed in the ...

Abstract Objective: To understand the epidemiological characteristics of patients with advanced schistosomiasis in Hunan Province, so as to provide the evidence for formulating the advanced schistosomiasis prevention strategies and measures.
Methods: The data of advanced schistosomiasis patients were collected and analyzed retrospectively with the cross section research method and description method in Hunan Province, 2012.
Results: There were 5 722 advanced schistosomiasis patients in Hunan Province, and among them, 4 112 patients were male (71.86%), and 1610 were female (28.14%). Totally 5311 patients came from the schistosomiasis endemic areas (92.82%) and 411 patients from non-schistosomiasis endemic areas (7.18%). The prevalence rate of advanced schistosomiasis was 8.46/10,000. The mean age of advanced schistosomiasis patients was 60.30 +/- 11.63 years, and the youngest was 17 years old and the oldest 92 years old. In the age composition of advanced schistosomiasis patients, the greatest number of cases was in the 60-70 years age group (32.72%). There were 3 595 cases of ascites type (62.83%), 2107 cases of splenomegaly type (36.82%), 11 cases of dwarf type (0.16%), and 11 cases of colon proliferation type (0.35%).
Conclusion: The prevalence rate of advanced schistosomiasis is relatively stable in Hunan Province, and the age of the patients showed an old aging trend. The salvation of advanced schistosomiasis patients in non-endemic areas should be strengthened.

Abstract Tidally induced, sudden temperature drops in Nan Wan, particularly pronounced during the spring tide, of ten bear eco logical consequences. We use an Ocean Nowcast/Forecast System (ONFS) at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) to examine a widely publicized cold-water intrusion event in July 2008, and com pare it with what we perceived as a normal intrusion event in June 2007. For a normal cold-water intrusion, cold anomalies eventually propagate away in forms similar to internal Kelvin waves. For early July of 2008, the NRL ONFS suggested an anomalous, subtidal and essentially east ward cur rent near Nan Wan. The subtidal current, super imposed on the ebb cur rent, blocks the prop a gation of cold anomalies in the direction of in ternal Kelvin waves, inducing anomalous and in efficient cold-water dispersal. The NRL ONFS also suggested the anomalous subtidal current as a post-typhoon response to the passage of Typhoon Fengshen.

Abstract The soil sampled from GAN NAN navel orange plant area was selected as research object, and the feasibility of analyzing the total nitrogen (TN) and soil organic matter (SOM) of soil was investigated by near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) techniques in the wavelength range of 4 000 - 7 500 cm(-1). Different pretreatment methods including multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), first derivative(1st D), second derivative (2nd D), Savitzkv-Golay (SG), standard normalized variate (SNV) and baseline were used. The partial least square regress (PLS) was built for the calibration models. The best TN model using SG pretreatment features the prediction correlation coefficients (r(c)) of 0.802, the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 2.754, the calibration correlation coefficients (r(p)) of 0.715, and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 3.077 in the wave-length range of 4 000 - 7 500 cm(-1). The best SOM model using SNV pretreatment has r(c) of 0.848, RMSEC of 0.128, r(p) of 0.790, and RMSEP of 0.152. The results showed that the NIR diffuse reflectance can be used for quick estimate of the TN and SOM contents in soil with the wavelength range of 4 000 - 7 500 cm(-1).

Abstract Sodium azide (NaN 3 ) ( 2 mM ) was used to induce mutation in black soybean variety CRWD for improvement of isofla vone content. The individual selections were made in M6, M7 and M8 generations, respectively. Both high levels of isoflavones and medium seed size traits were used as selection criteria. Across three growth seasons, the selected five NaN 3 -induced mutants accumulated more total isoflavones (average increases of 5 % to 25%) than their wild type vari ety CRWD. Four mutants yielded more (average increases of 17 % to 25%) than CRWD. Both mutants SA-M-03 (yel low cotyledon) and SA-M-05 (green cotyledon) are rich in isoflavones and may be useful in food and other applica tions.
