Abstract This study constitutes an investigation into the acoustic variability of intervocalic alveolar taps in a corpus of spontaneous speech from Madrid, Spain. Substantial variability was documented in this segment, with highly reduced variants constituting roughly half of all tokens during spectrographic inspection. In addition to qualitative documentation, the intensity difference between the tap and surrounding vowels was measured. Changes in this intensity difference were statistically modeled using Bayesian finite mixture models containing lexical and phonetic predictors. Model comparisons indicate predictive performance is improved when we assume two latent categories, interpreted as two pronunciation variants for the Spanish tap. In interpreting the model, predictors were more often related to categorical changes in which pronunciation variant was produced than to gradient intensity changes within each tap type. Variability in tap production was found according to lexical frequency, speech rate, and phonetic environment. These results underscore the importance of evaluating model fit to the data as well as what researchers modeling phonetic variability can gain in moving past linear models when they do not adequately fit the observed data.

Abstract It is axiomatic in medicinal chemistry that optimization of the potency of a small molecule at a macromolecular target requires complementarity between the ligand and target. In order to minimize the conformational penalty on binding, both enthalpically and entropically, it is therefore preferred to have the ligand preorganized in the bound conformation. In this Perspective, we highlight the role of allylic strain in controlling conformational preferences. Allylic strain was originally described for carbon-based allylic systems, but the same principles apply to other types of structure with sp

Abstract Importance: While mindfulness as a treatment for addiction has been objectively studied in a variety of settings, relatively little focus has been given to the subjective experience of program participants.
Objective: To elicit best practices for mindfulness work in addiction recovery.
Design and setting: Participant observation and semi-structured interviews with participants in a mindfulness course set within a residential addiction recovery program.
Results: Many participants found the practice to be a useful skill for relaxation and impulse control. Most planned to continue with mindfulness practice upon completion of the course. Of particular emphasis was the importance of genuine relationships, trust, and mutual respect between participants and instructors. Some participants reported feelings of patronization, which led to decreased investment in the coursework.
Conclusion: Mindfulness is a promising treatment for addiction. Several benefits and barriers were identified. This study was limited by a small sample size; generalizability may be limited due to particularly severe socioeconomic stressors of the study population. Abstract Objectives: To determine the rate of vision screening among children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the rate of photoscreening compared with visual acuity screening, and the effect of demographic factors on vision screening for children with ASD.
Methods: Data from well visits for 3- to 5-year-olds between January 2016 and December 2019 were collected via PEDSnet. Billing codes for vision screening were a proxy for the completion of vision screening. χ2 analysis examined the relationship of age, sex, race, ethnicity, region, and socioeconomic status to vision screening rate and rate of photoscreening versus visual acuity screening. Multivariate logistic regression assessed factors that impacted the odds of vision screening.
Results: We analyzed 63 829 well-child visits. Children with ASD were less likely to have a vision screening (36.5%) compared with children without ASD (59.9%). The lowest rates of screening occurred during the 3-year visit. Of those with ASD, Black children had a lower screening rate (27.6%) than white (39.7%) and other/multiracial children (39.8%). The use of photoscreening was higher in Hispanic children, increasing the overall rate of vision screening greater than non-Hispanic children. Practice region influenced the rates of vision screening for children with ASD because of more photoscreening.
Conclusions: Children with ASD are less likely to receive vision screening at well visits compared with typically developing children. This disparity was greatest among younger children and Black children. One practice region used more photoscreening and had higher rates of screening. Photoscreening is a useful tool to decrease disparity, especially among high-risk patient groups.
