Abstract Objective: E. M. Jellinek is considered one of the founders of alcohol science. On the 125th anniversary of his birth, the authors wish to contribute to existing, incomplete bibliographies of his work by offering a more comprehensive bibliography that includes his non-alcohol-studies publications as well as newly discovered alcohol-related items.
Method: After we reviewed the two existing Jellinek bibliographies, records were checked against the full-text items to correct errors and discrepancies. This led to the consolidation of the two bibliographies as well as the discovery of various reprints and republished titles. Based on the authors' parallel biographical investigations into Jellinek's lesser researched past, it was established that he had started his scientific career much earlier than previously documented. Additional publications attributed to E. M. Jellinek under various names were sought, located, and collected from geographically diverse sources in several languages, with the help of an international network of academic librarians. References were organized and separated by publication type, with reprinted and republished texts arranged underneath the original entries.
Results: Jellinek's comprehensive bibliography covers 70 years, from 1912 to 1982, with 165 original publications, as compared with the 90 and 96 publications, respectively, of the previous bibliographies. When reprints and republished items were included, the number of publications totals 308, as compared with the previous respective totals of 117 and 116.
Conclusions: The new Jellinek bibliography highlights his multidisciplinary approach to several scientific disciplines and provides the potential to reevaluate his contributions and total scholarly impact.

Abstract: ... works and personal and institutional records by or about E. M. Jellinek were assembled and ... Conclusions: With the help of E. M. Jellinek, the modern era of addiction science was launched ...

Abstract Objective: Elvin Morton Jellinek (1890-1963) was one of the founders of modern addiction science. This overview is a brief survey of his life and achievements, intended to re-introduce alcohol scholars to his contributions (and possible failings) as well as stimulate interest and historical research in the field.
Method: The article draws largely from the archival collection of the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies (CAS) Library and the Jellinek memorial issue of the CAS Information Services Newsletter. Scholarly works and personal and institutional records by or about E. M. Jellinek were assembled and, when necessary, translated into English.
Results: Born in 1890 in New York and raised in Hungary, Jellinek studied at several European universities and worked for various institutions and organizations in Budapest (1914-1920), Sierra Leone, Honduras, and at the Worcester State Hospital, in Massachusetts. In 1941 he became an associate professor of applied physiology at Yale University, where he directed the Yale Summer School of Alcohol Studies from 1941 to 1950. After more than a decade of work with the World Health Organization and several Canadian institutions, he taught and conducted research at the Institute for the Study of Human Problems at Stanford University until his death in 1963. Jellinek was a pioneer in research on the nature and causes of alcoholism and was an early proponent of the disease theory of alcoholism.
Conclusions: With the help of E. M. Jellinek, the modern era of addiction science was launched with an international outlook that included critical attention to the physical infrastructure and intellectual capital needed to form an interdisciplinary field of basic research, applied science, and clinical practice.

Abstract The term athlete does not currently have an agreed definition or standardized use across the literature. We analyzed the use of the term "athlete" amongst review studies specific to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rehabilitation to investigate if the term was justified in its use. A comprehensive review of a database was performed to identify review papers which used the term "athlete" in the title, and which were related to ACL rehabilitation and surveillance. These papers were analyzed and their source papers were extracted for review. Twenty-eight review papers were identified. Source studies were extracted and analyzed. After removal of duplicates 223 source papers were identified. Despite using the term "athlete" in the review study titles only 5/17 (10.7%) sufficiently justified the use of this term. The term athlete was used in 117/223 (52.5%) of the source studies. Of those, 78/117 source studies (66.7%) justified the term athlete. The remaining 39/117 (33.3%) papers where participants were stated to be athletes, gave no justification. The ambiguous use of the term athlete amongst published studies highlights the need for a definition or justification of the term to be used in studies. The lack of a standard definition leads to the potential for studies to dilute high quality data by the potentially differing rehabilitation requirements and access to resources available to those with varying exercise levels. The indiscriminate use of the term athlete could lead to participants with widely ranging physical activity levels being included in the same study, and being used to create clinical advice for all. Advice could potentially vary across those of differing physical activity levels.

Abstract We find conditions for optimal phase coherence among sums of phase-offset sine wave pairs of two frequencies, e.g., gamma and alpha. Optimal phase coherence occurs when the respective phase offsets match. Then, using stochastic rate models instead of firing models for both cortical and pulvinar activity, we show that for roughly matching phase offsets of alpha and gamma oscillations there is optimal phase coherence and information transmission between modelled cortical regions.

Abstract Research and enquiry (R&E) is an integral part of veterinary training. It is a foundation of evidence-based practice. In the University of Sydney Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree R&E culminates in a cap-stone experience in Year 3: a 'professionally focused project', a student-driven and academic supported individual research project. The project provides an authentic experience within a veterinary discipline. Students work with an academic advisor who provides guidance for developing and achieving meaningful educational and professional goals. Successful advising depends upon a shared understanding of, and commitment to, the advising process by students, advisors and the university. The R&E mission can be broadly defined as - veterinarians recognise that evidence-based approach to practice, which is based on the scientific method, leads to the generation of new knowledge that underpins the veterinary medical profession.

Abstract Objectives: Research suggests that clinical decision making for assessing and treating patients with swallowing dysfunction varies significantly, and decisions may harm patients. The study aimed to investigate clinical practice of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) assessing and treating swallowing in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs).
Design: Retrospective review of 120 medical records of patients recommended for a flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES).
Setting and participants: 120 SNF patients.
Methods: Records from 25 SNFs were reviewed to determine which patients were receiving swallowing therapy, their diet level pre- and post-FEES, and if they received prior imaging studies. Recordings of FEES were assigned severity ratings based on the Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity-FEES scores to determine the relationship between diet and liquid recommendations before and after FEES, how often patients consume a modified diet in the absence of dysphagia, percentage of patients without dysphagia receiving swallowing treatment, percentage of patients receiving alternative means of nutrition without dysphagia, and the percentage of patients with a feeding tube without an imaging assessment.
Results: Chi-square tests revealed no agreement between pre- and postimaging diet levels. Ordinal regressions indicated preimaging diets did not fit the DIGEST severity rating model; however, investigators found a good fit with postimaging diet recommendations. Descriptive statistics indicated that 67% of the patients receiving a modified solid and/or liquid did not have dysphagia. Treatment was provided to 100% of the patients without dysphagia. Sixty-one percent of patients with feeding tubes had no dysphagia. Forty-five percent of NPO (nothing by mouth) patients had imaging during their acute stay.
Conclusions and implications: The results strongly suggest that the practice of continuing acute care diet recommendations in a SNF increases cost and may negatively impact patient quality of life. The practice may also lead to negative health consequences. A new imaging assessment is required to inform treatment when medical status changes.
