    Abstract Context: Biocompatibility is one of the major prerequisites for safe clinical application of materials. Resin composites release their components into oral environment following restoration which cause adverse reactions.
    Aims: To evaluate and compare the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of flowable, bulk-fill flowable, and nanohybrid composites with glass ionomer cement in human gingival cells using epithelial-based cytome assay.
    Methodology: Sixty healthy patients with noncarious cervical lesions were selected and randomly assigned to four groups (
    Statistical analysis used: The results were subjected to statistical analysis using Friedman's test and Kruskal-Wallis test.
    Results: The highest level of cytotoxicity was noted at T2 time point with a significant decline at T3 time point. Least cytotoxic damage was exhibited by Group A followed by Group D. Highest cytotoxic effect was shown by Group B followed by Group C. There was no significant level of genotoxicity induced by any of the materials tested at different time points.
    Conclusion: There is significant cytotoxicity induced by the tested composite materials which had no long-term effects and no genotoxicity was induced by any of the restorative materials tested.

    Abstract Mycosphaerella musicola, M. fijiensis and M. eumusae are known to cause banana yellow Sigatoka, black Sigatoka and Eumusae leaf spot diseases respectively. However, differentiating the causative species has been challenging and the responses of banana landraces to this pathogen were little known. Purposive sampling surveys were conducted in different agro-climatic zones of Kerala state, India, to collect the leaf samples with Sigatoka leaf spot-like symptoms, to document the symptom expression on different landraces and to confirm the identity of the pathogen at species level. Fields surveyed during the post-monsoon period had 100% disease incidence with highest per cent disease severity of 43.90% in nine-month old cv. Palayankodan, while lowest PDS of 3.33% was observed in three-month old cv. Njalipoovan, during a pre-monsoon survey. Initial symptoms were small brown streaks, later developing into oval or elliptical brown spots with greyish centre and subsequently coalescing for leaf necrosis. Symptoms in different landraces varied across the zones. Sequencing and analysis of the ITS region from 50 isolates collected during the survey showed 99–100% homology with M. eumusae. Phylogenetic analyses further proved the species identity of the local isolates. Comparing the ITS barcodes of the three species of Mycosphaerella along with the local isolates confirmed that the pathogen inciting Sigatoka leaf spot in Kerala state, India, is Mycosphaerella eumusae.

    Abstract Dirofilaria is a parasitic nematode of domestic and wilds animals that can infect humans accidentally via the bite of potential vectors. Zoonotic filariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens (D. repens) is prevalent in several regions of the world. Human D. repens infections in Europe, Africa and Asia is considered an emerging zoonosis in these continents. The resultant infection from dirofilariasis can cause nodular lesions in lung, subcutaneous tissue, peritoneal cavity or eyes. Most of the documented cases of human dirofilariasis recorded in India had ocular infections, but very few subcutaneous dirofilariasis has been reported. This paper reports a case of dirofilariasis involving facial subcutaneous region. The clinical features, diagnostic issues and treatment aspects are considered.

    Abstract Background: Ligneous periodontitis or destructive membranous periodontal disease is a rare condition involving gingival tissues, which is due to plasminogen deficiency and fibrin deposition. Plasminogen deficiency is an ultrarare autosomal recessive disease. The disease is characterized by gingival enlargement and periodontal tissue destruction that leads to rapid tooth loss despite treatment attempts.     Conclusion: Ligneous periodontitis has been rarely reported in India. The reasons could be because of the rarity of the disease or missed diagnosis. The need to take a proper history and perform a proper clinical examination and histopathologic evaluation has to be stressed when diagnosing and treating gingival enlargements. If a genetic condition is suspected, genetic screening is also needed. All these will help the clinician in correctly diagnosing the disease and formulating a proper treatment plan for managing the condition.

    Abstract Background: Metastatic cancers in the oral cavity are usually very rare and are usually an indication of widespread malignancy. In some cases, oral metastasis was found to be the first presentation of distant site tumours. Even though oral metastatic lesions may be found anywhere in the oral cavity, they commonly present in the posterior areas of the jaw bones. Among the soft tissues, the gingiva is the most common site. The presence of inflammation in the gingiva and the role of periodontal microbiota are suggested to play a role in the attraction of metastatic cells. The purpose of this case report is to present a rare case of metastatic breast carcinoma presenting as a gingival enlargement in the maxillary anterior region.
    Conclusion: This case report presents a metastatic oral lesion in the maxillary anterior region of the primary breast cancer site. The young age of patient and an uncommon site of metastatic lesion are the striking features of this case. We would like to highlight the importance of a thorough clinical, radiological, and histological evaluation of any gingival swelling as it could be a metastatic lesion. IHC staining helps in the diagnosis of the primary site of metastatic carcinomas. An early diagnosis and intervention could reduce the morbidity of the lesion and improve the survival rate.

    Abstract Cellulose nanofibers have been extracted from arecanut palm sheath fibers via mild oxalic acid hydrolysis coupled with steam explosion technique. Cellulose nanofibers with diameter of 20.23 nm were obtained from arecanut palm sheath fibers. A series of robust hydrophobic cellulose nanopapers were fabricated by combining the synergistic effect of surface roughness induced by the successful deposition of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoflakes and stearic acid modification via a simple and cost-effective method. In this work, agro-waste arecanut palm sheath was employed as a novel source for the extraction of cellulose nanofibers. 2 wt% of ZnO nanoflakes and 1 M concentration of stearic acid were used to fabricate mechanically robust hydrophobic cellulose nanopapers with a water contact angle (WCA) of 134°. During the deposition of zinc oxide nanoflakes on the CNP for inducing surface roughness, a hydrogen bonding interaction is formed between the hydroxyl groups of cellulose nanofibers and the zinc oxide nanoflakes. When this surface roughened CNP was dipped in stearic acid solution. The hydroxyl groups in zinc oxide nanoflakes undergoes esterification reaction with carboxyl groups in stearic acid solution forming an insoluble stearate layer and thus inducing hydrophobicity on CNP. The fabricated hydrophobic cellulose nanopaper displayed a tensile strength of 22.4 MPa and better UV blocking ability which is highly desirable for the sustainable packaging material in the current scenario. Furthermore, the service life of the pristine and modified cellulose nanopapers was predicted using the Arrhenius equation based on the tensile properties obtained during the accelerated ageing studies. The outcome of this study would be broadening the potential applications of hydrophobic and mechanically robust cellulose nanopapers in sustainable packaging applications.
