Abstract Many approaches have been investigated to eliminate pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants during the last decades. However, a lack of sustainable and efficient solutions exists for the removal of hormones by advanced oxidation processes. The aim of this study was to synthesize and test new photoactive bio composites for the elimination of these molecules in wastewater effluents. The new materials were obtained from the activated carbon (AC) of

Abstract The multiscale structural and rheological features of a series of dilute and semidilute low-methoxyl (LM) pectin solutions and a representative pectin/calcium sol-gel sample were systematically explored using a comprehensive combination of dynamic (DLS) and static light/X-ray scattering (SALS/SLS/SAXS), rheology, and microscopy (OM/SEM) characterizations. The study focused on the rarely explored colloidal aspect of LM pectin solutions and sol-gel transition, in contrast to the polymeric features extensively explored in previous studies. A highly uniform colloid-like, micron-sized agglomerate species was revealed in dilute solutions, with a progressively increased degree of flocculation in the semidilute regime (≥1.5 wt%). The agglomerate species in these solutions was resolved to be formed by random associations of individual pectin chains (

Abstract Bone is a flexible and electro active tissue that is vulnerable to various traumatic injuries. The self-healing of damaged bone tissue towards reconstruction is limited due to the lack of proper niche compliances. Nevertheless, the classical grafting techniques like autograft/allograft for bone repair pose challenges like bacterial infections and donor-site morbidity with unsatisfactory outcomes. The use of appropriate biomaterial with osteogenic potential can meet these challenges. In this regard, bioactive glass ceramics is widely used as a bone filler or graft material because of its bonding affinity to bone leading towards bone reconstruction applications without the challenge of post implant infections. Hence, the current study is aimed at addressing this potentiality of zinc (Zn) for doped the bioglass at nano-scale advantages for bone tissue repair. Since, Zn has been demonstrated to have not only antibacterial property but also the stimulatory effect on osteoblasts differentiation, mineralization by enhancing the osteogenic genes expression. In view of these, the present study is focused on sol-gel synthesis and pysico-chemical characterization of Zinc-doped bioglass nanoparticles (Zn-nBGC) and also analyzing its biological implications. The surface morphological and physiochemical characterizations using SEM, EDX, FT-IR and XRD analysis has shown the increased surface area of Zn-nBGC particles providing a great platform for biomolecular interaction, cytocompatibility, cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. The obtaining hydroxy apatite groups have initiated in vitro mineralization towards osteogenic lineage formation. Zn has not only involved in enhancing cellular actions but also strengthen the ceramic nanoparticles towards antibacterial application. Hence the finding suggests a biomaterial synthesis of better biomaterial for bone tissue engineering application by preventing post-operative bacterial infection.

Abstract We herein report transparent self-cleaning coatings based on polyimide-fluorinated silica sol (PIFSS) nanocomposite. Polyamic acid-silica sol (PASS) suspensions were synthesized by adding four different amounts of a silica sol suspension to each end-capped polyamic acid solution. The PASS suspensions were spin-coated on glass slides, thermally imidized and treated with triethoxy-1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfluorodecylsilane (TEFDS) to prepare PIFSS coatings. The PIFSS coatings showed high resistance to separation from glass substrates and thermal stability. Furthermore, the PIFSS coatings on the glass substrate could be cleanly removed using polar aprotic solvents and repeated coating was possible. As the amount of silica sol particles in the PIFSS coating was increased, the hydrophobic contact angle increased. Among them, PIFSS-10 and PIFSS-15 coatings showed nearly superhydrophobic contact angles (144° and 148°, respectively) and good self-cleaning property. It was confirmed by SEM and AFM studies that their hydrophobic and self-cleaning properties are due to uniform particle distribution and relatively high surface roughness. PIFSS-10 coating showed a high transmittance value (88%) at 550 nm and good self-cleaning property, therefore suitable as a transparent self-cleaning coating. The advantages of the coating are that the fabrication process is simple, and the substrate is reusable. The PIFSS coating is expected to be applied in solar cell panels, windows, lenses and safety goggles.

The DSSC device using the modified PB matrix electrolyte improved the conductivity, and the charge transfer ability showed the outstanding stability of the device.

Abstract: ... by sol-gel method under various amount of precursor and support, water to precursor ratio, pH, aging time ...

Abstract The development of immobilized photocatalyst as a strategy for problematic electronics wastewater reuse is described in this study. The strategy was to perform separate rinsing, mostly consisting of low molecular weight compounds, and to decompose them with a simple process, based on the advanced oxidation process (AOP). Extensive studies were performed on the preparation conditions of immobilized photocatalysts by sol-gel method under various amount of precursor and support, water to precursor ratio, pH, aging time, and calcination conditions. The optimized preparation conditions were chosen by measuring removal efficiencies of isopropyl alcohol as a representative target compound with supportive SEM and XRD analyses. Removal efficiencies with photocatalyst and UV irradiation in synthetic wastewater simulating electronics wastewater were evaluated over time. Removal efficiencies of alcohol, acetone, ethanol, and acetaldehyde reached 97.2%, 71.2%, 99.0%, and 99.0%, respectively, in 2 h. Reaction constants of each compound were determined by fitting experimental data to the first order kinetic equation and the trial and error method with consecutive reaction pathway. As analysis results of reaction constants, UV with prepared photocatalyst was found to be effective and the decomposition of acetone was found to be the rate-determining step. The immobilized photocatalyst developed in this study would be useful for application of wastewater reuse with high removal efficiencies, mild preparation conditions, and mechanical stability.
