    Abstract Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoinflammatory disease that manifests with the unique feature of enthesitis. Gut microbiota, HLA-B*27, and biomechanical stress mutually influence and interact resulting in setting off a flame of inflammation. In the HLA-B*27 positive group, dysbiosis in the gut environment disrupts the barrier to exogenous bacteria or viruses. Additionally, biomechanical stress induces inflammation through enthesial resident or gut-origin immune cells. On this basis, innate and adaptive immunity can propagate inflammation and lead to chronic disease. Finally, bone homeostasis is regulated by cytokines, by which the inflamed region is substituted into new bone. Agents that block cytokines are constantly being developed to provide diverse therapeutic options for preventing the progression of inflammation. In addition, some antibodies have been shown to distinguish disease selectively, which support the involvement of autoimmune immunity in AS. In this review, we critically analyze the complexity and uniqueness of the pathogenesis with updates on the findings of immunity and provide new information about biologics and biomarkers.

    Abstract Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is histologically characterized by nonspecific osteitis. This inflammatory disorder, which lacks an infectious origin, typically presents with chronic pain and swelling at the affected site that can persist for months or even years. However, it is rare for CNO to affect the mandible. A 10-year-old girl presented with a primary complaint of pain in her left mandible. She had no significant medical or dental history. On examination, swelling was visible on the left buccal side, and imaging revealed radiolucent bone deterioration within the left mandible. This case report presents the radiological changes observed over a 12-year follow-up period. Variations in radiopacity, radiolucency, and periosteal reactions were noted periodically. This case highlights the radiological characteristics and findings that are crucial for the diagnosis of CNO, a condition for which no clear diagnostic criteria are currently available.

    Abstract Purpose: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the acceptability of donor remnant liver volume (RLV) to total liver volume (TLV) ratio (RLV/TLV) being <30% as safe in living donor liver transplantations (LDLTs).
    Methods: Online databases were searched from January 2000 to June 2022. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using fixed- or random-effects model.
    Results: One prospective and seven retrospective studies comprising 1935 patients (164 RLV/TLV <30% vs. 1771 RLV/TLV ≥30%) were included. Overall (OR = 1.82; 95% CI [1.24, 2.67]; p = .002) and minor (OR = 1.88; 95% CI [1.23, 2.88]; p = .004) morbidities were significantly lower in the RLV/TLV ≥30% group than in the RLV/TLV <30% group (OR = 1.82; 95% CI [1.24, 2.67]; p = .002). No significant differences were noted in the major morbidity, biliary complications, and hepatic dysfunction. Peak levels of bilirubin (SMD = .50; 95% CI [.07, .93]; p = .02) and international normalized ratio (SMD = .68; 95% CI [.04, 1.32]; p = .04) were significantly lower in the RLV/TLV ≥ 30% group than in the RLV/TLV <30% group. No significant differences were noted in the peak alanine transferase and aspartate transaminase levels and hospital stay.
    Conclusions: Considering the safety of the donor as the top priority, the eligibility of a potential liver donor in LDLT whose RLV/TLV is expected to be <30% should not be accepted.

    Abstract Background: Abnormal new bone formation can occur not only in the vertebral body but also can occur in facet, costovertebral, and costotransverse joints in radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) patients. Little is known about the association between syndesmophyte progression and paravertebral joint ankylosis in r-axSpA.
    Objectives: Costotransverse joint ankylosis in r-axSpA patients was measured. Furthermore, the association between syndesmophyte progression for 2 years assessed by computed tomography syndesmophyte score (CTSS) and facet, costovertebral, and costotransverse joints ankylosis were evaluated.
    Design: Single-center, prospective, cohort study.
    Methods: Whole spine CT images taken at baseline and 2-year follow-up were used to calculate the CTSS of the vertebral body. In addition, ankylosis of the facet/costovertebral/costotransverse joints was scored. CTSS (range, 0-552) and facet joint ankylosis (range, 0-46) were assessed at 23 vertebral units. Costovertebral joints at T1-T12 (range, 0-48) and costotransverse joints at T1-T10 (range, 0-20) were also assessed by independent two readers. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated to determine inter-reader reliability. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated to identify the associations between syndesmophyte progression and the baseline status of facet, costovertebral, and costotransverse joints.
    Results: In all, 50 patients with r-axSpA were included. Readers 1 and 2 identified C7-T3 (facet joints), T5-T7 and T12 (costovertebral joints), and T8-T9 (costotransverse joints), as common sites of ankylosis at baseline and at 2-year follow-up. The ICCs for the facet, costovertebral, and costotransverse joints at baseline were 0.876, 0.952, and 0.753, respectively. OR of baseline costovertebral and costotransverse joint ankylosis for predicting syndesmophyte progression of the vertebral body was 4.644 [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.295-9.398] and 1.524 (95% CI, 1.036-2.244), respectively.
    Conclusion: Costotransverse joint ankylosis in r-axSpA patients can be measured semi-quantitatively on whole spine CT, and ankylosis of the costotransverse and costovertebral joints predicts the progression of syndesmophytes.

    Abstract Background: A standard graft-to-recipient weight ratio (GRWR) ≥0.8% is widely accepted in living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT); however, the potential donor pool is expanded to patients adopting small-for-size graft (SFSGs) with GRWR <0.8%. This study aimed to investigate the effect of SFSG on short- and long-term outcomes following LDLT.
    Methods: Electronic databases were searched from January 1995 to January 2022 for studies comparing short- or long-term outcomes between patients with SFSG (GRWR <0.8%, SFSG group) and sufficient volume graft (GRWR ≥0.8%, non-SFSG group). The primary outcomes were one-, three-, and five-year overall survival (OS) and graft survival (GS), while the secondary outcome was postoperative complications.
    Results: Twenty-four studies comprising 7996 patients were included. In terms of OS, SFSG group had poor three-year OS (HR: 1.48, 95% CI [1.01, 2.15], p = 0.04), but there were no significant differences between two groups in one-year OS (HR: 1.50, 95% CI [0.98, 2.29], p = 0.06) and five-year OS (HR: 1.40, 95% CI [0.95, 2.08], p = 0.02). In GS, there were no significant differences in one-year (HR 1.31, 95% CI [1.00, 1.72], p = 0.05), three-year (HR 1.33, 95% CI [0.97, 1.82], p = 0.07), and five-year GS (HR 1.17, 95% CI [0.95, 1.44], p = 0.13). The SFSG group had comparable postoperative complications, except for a high incidence of vascular complications and small-for-size syndromes.
    Conclusions: Expanding the potential donor pool in LDLT to SFSG with GRWR <0.8% can be acceptable in terms of comparable long-term OS and GS, despite the risk for vascular complications and small-for-size syndrome.

    Abstract Objective: Pork belly is a cut of meat with high worldwide demand. However, although the belly is comprised of multiple muscles and fat, unlike the loin muscle, research on their genetic parameters has yet to focus on a representative cut. To use swine breeding, it is necessary to estimate heritability against pork belly traits. Moreover, estimating genetic correlations is needed to identify genetic relationship among the traditional carcass and meat quality traits. This study sought to estimate the heritability of the carcass, belly, and their component traits, as well as the genetic correlations among them, to confirm whether these traits can be improved.
    Methods: A total of 543 Yorkshire pigs (406 castrated males and 137 females) from 49 sires and 244 dam were used in this study. To estimate genetic parameters, a total of 12 traits such as lean meat production ability, meat quality and pork belly traits were chosen. The heritabilities were estimated by using genome-wide efficient mixed model association software. The statistical model was selected so that farm, carcass weight, sex, and slaughter season were fixed effects. In addition, its genetic parameters were calculated via MTG2 software.
    Results: The heritability estimates for the 7th belly slice along the whole plate and its components were low to moderate (0.07±0.07 to 0.33±0.07). Moreover, the genetic correlations among the carcass and belly traits were moderate to high (0.28±0.20 to 0.99±0.31). Particularly, the rectus abdominis muscle exhibited a high absolute genetic correlation with the belly and meat quality (0.73±52 to 0.93±0.43).
    Conclusion: A moderate to high correlation coefficient was obtained based on the genetic parameters. The belly could be genetically improved to contain a larger proportion of muscle regardless of lean meat production ability.

    Abstract Biosorptive treatment of industrial wastewater contaminated with heavy metals has been recognized as one of the most effective green tools, competing with traditional physical/chemical treatment processes. This study delves into the detailed investigation of the biosorbent prepared from fermentation biowaste, particularly focusing on the mechanism behind permanganate (Mn(VII)) removal. Various parameters including pH, biosorbent dosage, initial concentration, and temperature were examined. Among these factors, solution pH emerged as the most crucial in removing Mn(VII) using the biosorbent. The significant removal of Mn(VII) was attributed to both reduction and adsorption, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Depending on the experimental conditions, the removal of Mn(VII) was influenced not only by simple adsorption but also by oxidation-reduction and precipitation processes. This study not only advances our understanding of biosorptive treatment but also highlights the promising potential of fermentation biowaste-based biosorbents for effective Mn(VII) removal.
