Abstract Visible-light-assisted photocatalysis has been recognized as an effective solution to the degradation of various pollutants including antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides, microplastics, and organic dyes. Herein, an n-n heterojunction TiO₂/Fe-MOF photocatalyst is reported, designed via solvothermal synthesis route. TiO₂/Fe-MOF photocatalyst was characterized by XPS, BET, EIS, EDS, DRS, PL, FTIR, XRD, TEM, SEM and HRTEM techniques. Inspired by XRD, FTIR, XPS, EDS, TEM, SEM, and HRTEM analyses, the successful synthesis of n-n heterojunction TiO₂/Fe-MOF photocatalysts was proved. The migration efficiency of the light-induced electron-hole pairs was confirmed by the PL and EIS tests. TiO₂/Fe-MOF exhibited a significant performance for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) removal under visible light irradiation. TC removal efficiency for TiO₂/Fe-MOF (15%) nanocomposite reached 97% within 240 min, ca. 11 times higher than pure TiO₂. The photocatalytic enhancement of TiO₂/Fe-MOF could be attributed to the broadening the light response range, forming an n-n junction between Fe-MOF and TiO₂ components, suppressing charge recombination. Based on recycling experiments, TiO₂/Fe-MOF had a good potential to be used in consecutive TC degradation tests.

Abstract Photocatalysis process is a prominent approach for the degradation of organic contaminants. However, the swift recombination of charge carriers commonly limits the photoactivity. Hence, to create a suitable nanocomposite for removal of pollutants, BiOI and Ag₆Si₂O₇ particles were anchored on the oxygen vacancy rich-TiO₂ (abbreviated as OVs-TO) through a simple approach to construct the OVs-TO/BiOI/Ag₆Si₂O₇ nanocomposites. Then, various structural features of the systems were assayed with different characterization tools. It was found that the photocatalyst with 20 wt% and 30 wt% of BiOI and Ag₆Si₂O₇ exhibits the excellent performance in removal of RhB, which are about 194, 18.1, and 9.59-times higher than the TiO₂ (abbreviated as TO), OVs-TO, and OVs-TO/BiOI (20 %) nanomaterials, respectively. This supreme improved photodegradation activity was allocated to the formed p-n-n heterojunctions between the semiconductors, impressive segregation of charges, significant visible-light absorption of OVs-TO, BiOI, and Ag₆Si₂O₇, and textural enhancement. A suitable mechanism was also offered through the outcomes of Mott-Schottky and the quenching experiments. This research work illustrated that the ternary p-n-n photocatalyst could be efficacious for ameliorating the visible-light photocatalytic ability for environmental and energy applications.

Abstract Pharmaceutical residual contaminants in aquatic ecosystems have caused severe risks to human health. Affordable, eco-friendly and effective photocatalysts to deal with these pollutants has become a hot topic in the scientific community. In this research, Ag₃BiO₃ nanoparticles were embedded on TiO₂ to form n-n heterojunction through a facile hydrothermal method. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), brunauer emmett teller (BET), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), photoluminescence (PL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS) tests, the successful construction of TiO₂/Ag₃BiO₃ heterojunction is proved. TiO₂/Ag₃BiO₃ heterojunctions were employed as photocatalysts to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under visible light irradiation in aqueous solution. Optimum TCH photodegradation efficiency was observed for TiO₂/Ag₃BiO₃ (10%), 15.4 times superior to that of TiO₂. The enhanced TCH photodegradation efficiency of TiO₂/Ag₃BiO₃ results from improved light absorption capacity and the reduction of recombination of photogenerated charge carriers via generation of n-n heterojunctions. The mechanism of increasing the photodegradation efficiency of TCH was determined by employing reactive species quenching experiments. TiO₂/Ag₃BiO₃ (10%) also exhibited an acceptable stability.

Abstract The construction of efficient photocatalysts based on TiO₂, with sever activity under visible light, has gained significant attention for the treatment of water contaminations. Therefore in this work, Bi₂SiO₅ nanoparticles were combined with TiO₂ to fabricate binary TiO₂/Bi₂SiO₅ nanocomposites with n-n heterojunction using a facile hydrothermal method. The performance of TiO₂/Bi₂SiO₅ photocatalysts was assessed by the degradation of Malachite green, Fuchsine, methyl orange, Congo red, and Rhodamine B contaminants under visible light. The results of photocatalytic experiments revealed that TiO₂/Bi₂SiO₅ photocatalysts have an outstanding potency in the removal of these organic contaminants. The best photocatalytic ability was observed for the TiO₂/Bi₂SiO₅ (5%) nanocomposite with the activity of 4.5, 4.6, 7.1, 5.2, and 6.6 times as much as Bi₂SiO₅ and 9.2, 11.2, 17.5, 10.9, and 16.7 folds greater than TiO₂ in the degradation of Fuchsine, Malachite green, methyl orange, Congo red, and Rhodamine B contaminants, respectively. The suppression of charges through the formation of n-n heterojunction, enhanced visible-light absorption, and boosted surface area have caused improvement in the photocatalytic activity TiO₂/Bi₂SiO₅ nanocomposites. Moreover, the TiO₂/Bi₂SiO₅ (5%) nanocomposite exhibited good photostability. This study suggests efficient design of visible-light-responsive photocatalysts based on TiO₂, which could have appropriate potential in sewage treatment.

Abstract Background: Circularization of RNA mediated by association of translation factors and RNA elements in 5' and 3' UTRs is a common feature for translation control in eukaryotes. There is no information about translation in plant rhabdoviruses and little information is known in animal rhabdoviruses.
Methods: The role of 5' and 3' UTRs in two genes of EMDV in translation were studied using luciferase constructs and RNA structures of these sequences were analyzed by SHAPE and Inline probing.
Results: We have found that efficient translation of N and X mRNAs of nucleorhabdovirus Eggplant mottled dwarf virus (EMDV) requires elements present in both 5' and 3' UTRs. Luciferase reporter constructs containing precise 5' and 3' UTRs of the N and X genes had substantially higher translational activity compared with constructs containing only the 5' or 3' UTR. The 3'UTR of carmovirus Turnip crinkle virus, which contains a well-characterized cap-independent translation enhancer, was unable to complement the lack of EMDV 3' UTR. Addition of cap analog to luciferase constructs containing the UTRs of the N gene did not restore translation, and translation of the reporter construct in the absence of the 5' cap was higher than the capped construct. No RNA-RNA interactions between 5' and 3' UTRs were detected by EMSA or in-line cleavage structural assays. Deletion of 11 nucleotides from the 3' terminus negated the synergistic activity of the 3'UTR.
Conclusions: The results with RNA-RNA interaction suggesting that translational synergy between the UTRs may utilize alternative means. Mutation analysis in 3'UTR suggesting that the polyadenylation signal sequence contained in this location may play a critical role in translation.

Abstract Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia following open-heart surgery. Agents with antioxidant properties may reduce postoperative complications like postoperative AF (POAF) in patients undergoing open-heart surgery. This study was conducted to assess the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in prevention of AF following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
Methods: Three hundred patients who underwent CABG surgery were entered in the study. Patients with contraindications for beta-blockers and patients were simultaneously replacing or repairing the valve with open-heart surgery were excluded. The patients were randomly divided into two groups (n = 150) and they were received NAC plus carvedilol or carvedilol. The patients were monitored for 5 days after surgery and the incidence of AF during hospitalization was recorded.
Results: AF was detected in 14 patients in the NAC with Carvedilol group (9.33%) and 23 patients in Carvedilol group (15.33%). There was no significant difference in the incidence of POAF between the two groups (p value = 0.112). The result of multivariable regression model represented that although the incidence of POAF was lower in NAC plus carvedilol group, it wasn't statistically significant (p value = 0.10).
Conclusions: NAC was not associated with a decreased incidence of AF following CABG surgery.

Abstract Herein, TiO₂/NiCr₂O₄ nanocomposites with p-n heterojunctions were synthesized via a refluxing method and used with peroxydisulfate (PDS) to produce extensive reactive radicals. Textural, optical, photoelectrochemical, structural, and morphological properties of the prepared materials were extensively investigated. After adding 1.48 mM PDS, the removal rate constant of tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) over the TiO₂/NiCr₂O₄ (20%)/PDS system was almost 20.5, 7.24, and 5.91-times as high as the pristine TiO₂, TiO₂/PDS, and TiO₂/NiCr₂O₄ (20%) samples, respectively. Therefore, the synergistic effect of PDS and heterogeneous photocatalysis remarkably impacted the degradation reaction of TH. It was proposed that all h⁺, •O₂⁻, •OH, and SO₄•⁻ contributed to the degradation reaction. According to the formation of heterojunction between n-TiO₂, and p-NiCr₂O₄ semiconductors, a plausible mechanism for removal of different contaminants in the TiO₂/NiCr₂O₄/PDS system was discussed.
