    Abstract Hypoxia is a common phenomenon in solid tumors, and its presence inhibits the efficacy of tumor chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Accurate measurement of hypoxia before tumor treatment is essential.     Abstract The nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field that has become a hot topic in cancer therapy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials and hybrid composites consisted of organic linkers and metal cations. Despite the wide application of MOFs in other fields, the potential of MOFs for purpose of cancer therapy has been revealed by the recent studies. High surface area and porosity, significant drug loading and encapsulation efficiency are among the benefits of using MOFs in drug delivery. MOFs can deliver genes/drugs with selective targeting of tumor cells that can be achieved through functionalization with ligands. The photosensitizers and photo-responsive nanostructures including carbon dots and gold nanoparticles can be loaded in/on MOFs to cause phototherapy-mediated tumor ablation.     Abstract Analyzing the influence of tourism on carbon emission has significant implications for promoting the sustainable development of tourism. Based on the panel data of 31 tourist cities in China from 2005 to 2022, this study utilizes a structural equation model to explore the carbon reduction effect of tourism development and its influencing mechanism. The results show that: (1) The overall carbon emission efficiency of tourism cities first decreased and then increased, rised to a peak of 0.923 in 2022. (2) Tourism development has a significant positive impact on carbon emission efficiency, and there are three influence paths: tourism → environmental regulation → carbon emission efficiency, tourism → environmental regulation → industrial structure → carbon emission efficiency, and tourism → industrial structure → carbon emission efficiency. (3) The influence of tourism development on carbon emission efficiency mainly depends on the direct effect, and the development of tourism also indirectly affect the industrial structure. Environmental regulation also mainly depends on the direct effect on carbon emission efficiency. (4) Foreign direct investment lead to the reduction of carbon emission efficiency in both direct and indirect aspects.

    Abstract As societal aging intensifies, the incidence of osteoporosis (OP) continually rises. OP is a skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone mass, deteriorated bone tissue microstructure, and consequently increased bone fragility and fracture susceptibility, typically evaluated using bone mineral density (BMD) and T-score. Not only does OP diminish patients' quality of life, but it also imposes a substantial economic burden on society. Conventional pharmacological treatments yield limited efficacy and severe adverse reactions. In contemporary academic discourse, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have surfaced as auspicious novel therapeutic modalities for OP. EVs can convey information through the cargo they carry and have been demonstrated to be a crucial medium for intercellular communication, playing a significant role in maintaining the homeostasis of the bone microenvironment. Furthermore, various research findings provide evidence that engineered strategies can enhance the therapeutic effects of EVs in OP treatment. While numerous reviews have explored the progress and potential of EVs in treating degenerative bone diseases, research on using EVs to address OP remains in the early stages of basic experimentation. This paper reviews advancements in utilizing MSCs and their derived EVs for OP treatment. It systematically examines the most extensively researched MSC-derived EVs for treating OP, delving not only into the molecular mechanisms of EV-based OP therapy but also conducting a comparative analysis of the strengths and limitations of EVs sourced from various cell origins. Additionally, the paper emphasizes the technical and engineering strategies necessary for leveraging EVs in OP treatment, offering insights and recommendations for future research endeavors.

    Abstract Improving carbon emission efficiency is crucial for achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality. This paper analyzes the carbon emission efficiency of Chinese cities using panel data from 275 prefecture-level cities between 2006 and 2020. The super-efficiency SBM (undesirable slacks-based measurement) model of undesired output, combined with kernel density estimation and exploratory data analysis, is employed. This study finds, firstly, from 2006 to 2020, the average efficiency of carbon emissions in Chinese cities declined from 0.53 to 0.48, indicating a downward trend. Secondly, from a temporal perspective, the level of dispersion in urban carbon emission efficiency has become increasingly distinct over time, coupled with a decrease in polarization. Thirdly, in terms of spatial analysis, urban carbon emission efficiency in China shows a positive correlation in a global context. In terms of local spatial correlation, it primarily exhibits high-high and low-low clusters, with a few instances of low-high and high-low clusters. Finally, based on the research findings, this paper proposes suggestions to improve urban carbon emission efficiency.

    Abstract Objective: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, with diarrhea predominant IBS (IBS-D) as the most common subtype. Increasing evidence reported that the gut microbiota-mediated serotonin pathway plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of IBS-D. In this study, potential herbal medicine, plant extracts and its monomers that can be employed as the candidate molecules for IBS-D through gut microbiota-mediated serotonin pathway were reviewed.
    Key findings: The bacteria indigenous to gut microbiota regulates serotonin pathway, mainly increasing tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) and decreasing serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT), by activating cyclooxygenase/prostaglandin E2 (COX/PGE2) signaling. It further accelerated gastrointestinal motility and visceral hyperalgesia. Herbal medicine prescription including Tongxie yaofang and Shugan decoction, as well as some monomers of flavonoid and polyphenol compounds can be regarded as the potential agents for IBS-D. The predominate mechanisms were related to regulating serotonin pathway by driving on the specific bacterial abundance (such as Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes). However, there are few reports on which specific bacteria species play a regulatory role in serotonin pathway, and most of these effective agents were only evidenced by preclinical studies. We hope this review will provide some useful directions for the treatment strategy of IBS-D.

    Abstract Background and objective: Knowledge of electromechanical coupling in cardiomyocyte and how it is influenced by various pathophysiological factors is fundamental to understanding the pathogenesis of myocardial disease and its response to medication, which is however hard to be thoroughly addressed by clinical/experimental studies due to technical limitations. At this point, computational modeling offers an alternative approach. The main objective of the study was to develop a computational model capable of simulating the process of electromechanical coupling and quantifying the roles of various factors in play in the human left ventricular cardiomyocyte.
    Methods: A new electrophysiological model was firstly built by combining several existing electrophysiological models and incorporating the mechanism of electrophysiological homeostasis, which was subsequently coupled to models representing the cross-bridge dynamics and active force generation during excitation-contraction coupling and the passive mechanical properties of cardiomyocyte to yield an integrative electromechanical model. Model parameters were calibrated or optimized based on a large amount of experimental data. The resulting model was applied to delineate the characteristics of electromechanical coupling and explore underlying determinant factors in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) cardiomyocyte, as well as quantify their changes in response to different medications.
    Results: Model predictions captured the major electromechanical characteristics of cardiomyocyte under both normal physiological and HCM conditions. In comparison with normal cardiomyocyte, HCM cardiomyocyte suffered from systemic changes in both electrophysiological and mechanical variables. Numerical simulations of drug response revealed that Mavacamten and Metoprolol could both reduce the active contractility and alleviate calcium overload but had marked differential influences on many other electromechanical variables, which theoretically explained why the two drugs have differential therapeutic effects. In addition, our numerical experiments demonstrated the important role of compensatory ion transport in maintaining electrophysiological homeostasis and regulating cytoplasmic volume.
    Conclusions: A sophisticated computational model has the advantage of providing quantitative and integrative insights for understanding the pathogenesis and drug responses of HCM or other myocardial diseases at the level of cardiomyocyte, and hence may contribute as a useful complement to clinical/experimental studies. The model may also be coupled to tissue- or organ-level models to strengthen the physiological implications of macro-scale numerical simulations.
