Abstract We theoretically study topological features, band structure, and localization properties of a dimerized two-leg ladder with an oscillating on-site potential. The periodicity of the on-site potential can take either rational or irrational values. We consider two types of dimerized configurations; symmetric and asymmetric models. For rational values of the periodicity as long as inversion symmetry is preserved both symmetric and asymmetric ladders can host topological phases. Additionally, the energy spectrum of the models exhibits a fractal structure known as the Hofstadter butterfly spectrum, dependent on the dimerization of the hopping and the strength of the on-site potential. In the case of irrational values for the periodicity, a metal-insulator phase transition occurs with small values of the critical strength of the on-site potential in the dimerized cases. Our models incorporate the effects of lattice configuration and quasi-periodicity, paving the way for establishing platforms that host both topological and non-topological phase transitions.

Abstract With the emergence of COVID-19, it is important to address the possible scenarios of SARS-CoV-2 virulence. Although several researchers have addressed the possible mechanisms of enveloped virus transfection, for example, influenza, here, the relationship between exhaled virus laden-particles, the climate, and transfection probability is discussed by interpreting the findings of prior studies. Importantly, the higher probability of viral transfection in cold and dry public spaces such as near cold shelves of groceries is illustrated. Thus, additional protective measures in such spaces are recommended.

Abstract We study an s-wave superconductivity in a one-dimensional dimerized diamond lattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field. The considered diamond lattice, comprising of three sublattices per unitcell and having flat band, has two dimerization patterns; the intra unitcell hoppings have the same (opposite) dimerization pattern as the corresponding inter unitcell hoppings, namely, neighboring (facing) dimerization. Using the mean-field theory, we calculate the superconducting order parameter self-consistently and examine the stability of the superconducting phase against the spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman splitting, dimerization, and temperature. We find that the spin-orbit coupling or Zeeman splitting individually has a detrimental effect on the superconductivity, mostly for the facing dimerization. But their mutual effect revives the superconductivity at charge neutrality point for the facing dimerization.

Abstract In this work, the process of designing and simulating optical sensors based on photonic crystal (PC) micro-ring resonators (MRRs) has been investigated. According to the PC type, different waveguides and resonators can be designed, and various topologies can be proposed from their combination, for optical sensor applications. Here, the investigated MRR is of the symmetrical micro-hexagonal ring resonator (MHRR) type. Different arrays of MHRR arrangement have been designed to investigate their effects on the output spectrum. The results of the design and simulation of different topologies have been analyzed and compared with other numerical researches. Considering all the necessary aspects of PC optical sensors, a detailed and comprehensive algorithm has been presented for designing these devices and choosing the optimal structure. In a more complementary process, the effects of reflector rods have been investigated, which indicates the existence of similarity and compatibility in the design between the distance of reflector rods and the length of MHRRs to obtain the optimal structure. Finally, the effect of different values of lattice constant and radius of dielectric rods on FWHM, transmission (TR) and resonant wavelength is studied, and the most optimal mode is presented. In order to measure the performance of the proposed optimal sensor, its application for gas detection has been analyzed. TR, FWHM, quality factor (QF), sensitivity (S) and figure of merit (FOM) of the proposed sensor were equal to 96%, 0.31 nm, 2636, 6451 nm/RIU and 2960 RIU

Abstract Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that damages myelinated fibers within the central nervous system. Data obtained using optical coherence tomography (OCT) have recently been identified as a potential biomarker for this disease. We aimed to measure circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (cpRNFLT) using OCT and to compare the results in healthy participants with those of individuals having clinically definitive MS with and without a history of optic neuritis.
Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited patients with clinically confirmed MS, with and without optic neuritis, and healthy individuals as a control group. We documented demographic characteristics, duration of MS, and time elapsed since the episode of optic neuritis. All participants underwent a thorough ocular examination and measurement of total, superior, and inferior cpRNFLT using swept-source OCT.
Results: In participants with MS, women outnumbered men in the subsets with (90%) and without (64%) optic neuritis. The control group comprised approximately similar numbers of men and women. There was a statistically significant difference in total, superior, and inferior cpRNFLT between study groups (all
Conclusions: Patients with clinically confirmed MS, with or without optic neuritis, had a significantly decreased cpRNFLT compared to that of healthy individuals. There was a significant inverse correlation between age and total cpRNFLT and a difference in cpRNFLT between the sexes, indicating that age and sex may influence the measurement of cpRNFLT using OCT in patients with MS. As a screening tool, OCT should be used along with other existing diagnostic modalities for patients with definite or suspected MS. Further longitudinal studies including various classifications of MS with or without isolated episodes of optic neuritis, along with diagnostic accuracy studies, could provide more robust conclusions on the suitability of OCT as a biomarker of MS.

Abstract We consider a disordered topological insulator thin film placed on the top of a ferromagnetic insulator with a perpendicular exchange field M and subjected to a perpendicular electric field. The presence of ferromagnetic insulator causes that bottom surface states of the topological insulator thin film become spin polarized and the electric field provides a potential difference V between the two surface states, resulting in breaking of time-reversal and inversion symmetry in the system. Using Kubo formalism and employing the first Born approximation as well as the self-consistent Born approximation, we calculate the spin Hall conductivity. We find that for small values of V, a large spin conductivity can be generated through large values of M away from the charge neutrality point. But for large values of V, the spin conductivity can be promoted even with small values of M around the charge neutrality point. The effect of vertex corrections and the stability of the obtained large spin conductivity against disorders are also examined.
