Abstract While the strong interaction between the internal unit and the fullerene cage inside metallofullerenes is widely acknowledged, how the cage transformation interacts with the cluster configuration remains elusive. For this purpose, we herein synthesized three metallofullerene molecules with an easy-to-compare cluster configuration and cage arrangement, namely Lu

Abstract Background: To develop a novel machine learning-based intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formula for highly myopic eyes.
Methods: A total of 1828 eyes (from 1828 highly myopic patients) undergoing cataract surgery in our hospital were used as the internal dataset, and 151 eyes from 151 highly myopic patients from two other hospitals were used as external test dataset. The Zhu-Lu formula was developed based on the eXtreme Gradient Boosting and the support vector regression algorithms. Its accuracy was compared in the internal and external test datasets with the Barrett Universal II (BUII), Emmetropia Verifying Optical (EVO) 2.0, Kane, Pearl-DGS and Radial Basis Function (RBF) 3.0 formulas.
Results: In the internal test dataset, the Zhu-Lu, RBF 3.0 and BUII ranked top three from low to high taking into account standard deviations (SDs) of prediction errors (PEs). The Zhu-Lu and RBF 3.0 showed significantly lower median absolute errors (MedAEs) than the other formulas (all P < 0.05). In the external test dataset, the Zhu-Lu, Kane and EVO 2.0 ranked top three from low to high considering SDs of PEs. The Zhu-Lu formula showed a comparable MedAE with BUII and EVO 2.0 but significantly lower than Kane, Pearl-DGS and RBF 3.0 (all P < 0.05). The Zhu-Lu formula ranked first regarding the percentages of eyes within ± 0.50 D of the PE in both test datasets (internal: 80.61%; external: 72.85%). In the axial length subgroup analysis, the PE of the Zhu-Lu stayed stably close to zero in all subgroups.
Conclusions: The novel IOL power calculation formula for highly myopic eyes demonstrated improved and stable predictive accuracy compared with other artificial intelligence-based formulas.

Abstract Background: Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in the progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Damaged mitochondria produce excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can cause apoptosis. Mitochondrial dynamics control the quality and function of mitochondria. Targeting mitochondrial dynamics may reduce ROS-induced apoptosis and improve renal injury in DKD. Modified Hu-lu-ba-wan (MHLBW) shows distinct clinical effects on DKD patients, which are related to its role in antioxidant stress modulation. However, the relevant mechanisms of MHLBW have not been clearly explored.
Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of MHLBW on spontaneous DKD mice and clarify the potential mechanisms.
Methods: The main components of MHLBW were identified by HPLC. Using db/db mice as DKD models, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of MHLBW on mice after an 8-week administration. We investigated the molecular mechanism of MHLBW in regulating mitochondrial dynamic homeostasis, podocyte apoptosis, and glomerular damage. After that, computational docking analysis and in vitro experiments were conducted for further mechanism verification.
Results: Intragastric administration of MHLBW for 8 weeks in db/db mice significantly improved glucose metabolism, basement membrane thickening, mesangial expansion, glomerular fibrosis, and podocyte injury. MHLBW can reverse podocyte apoptosis via promoting mitochondrial dynamic homeostasis, which was related to regulating the PKM2/ PGC-1α/Opa1 pathway. Berberine (BBR), one of the components of MHLBW, exhibited preeminent affinity with PKM2 as reflected by computational docking analysis. In cultured podocytes, BBR can also prevent apoptosis by promoting PKM2-mediated mitochondrial dynamic homeostasis.
Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that MHLBW can treat DKD by inhibiting glomerular damage and podocyte apoptosis through positive regulation of PKM2-mediated mitochondrial dynamic homeostasis. These results may provide a potential strategy against DKD.

Abstract Rationale: Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is a common sensory, motor, and reflex disorder. Numbness, a common subjective symptom of CSR, lacks objective quantitative indicators and recognized effective treatments, but is also difficult to recover from. We present a case report describing a traditional acupuncture treatment for CSR, utilizing a special acupuncture method and point, namely the Yunmen point.
Patient concerns: A 40-year-old woman presented with unilateral arm numbness caused by CSR.
Diagnoses: A diagnosis of CSR was made in the orthopedic department of a local hospital.
Interventions: We attempted acupuncture at the Yunmen (LU 2) acupoint combined with neck-seven-acupoint under computed tomographic guidance.
Outcomes: After 10 times treatment sessions, the patient no longer experienced weakness, coldness, or numbness in the affected upper limb. In addition, the stiffness in the neck and shoulders was reduced. On physical examination, the patient's left brachial plexus traction test was negative; reassessment of the CSR-20-point score scale showed a perfect score, and the visual analog scale score was 0.
Lessons: Our report indicates that acupuncture at the LU 2 acupoint combined with neck-seven-acupoint is effective in treating numbness and coldness of the arm, and other neurological symptoms caused by cervical spondylosis. Moreover, with the appropriate acupuncture technique, the risk of acupuncture at the LU 2 acupoint can be minimized.

Abstract The magnetic properties of undoped, bulk CeO2 are not fully understood. In contrast to nanocrystalline ceria that exhibits paramagnetism attributed to Ce3+ at grain surfaces, bulk ceria is weakly paramagnetic, despite the absence of magnetic ions. In the present work, the magnetic susceptibility of bulk ceria ceramics doped with Lu3+, which has neither spin nor orbital angular momentum, was measured in order to assess the relative contributions of the crystal lattice, residual Ce3+ and oxygen vacancies to the overall bulk magnetization. We observed a magnetic response consisting of two parts: temperature independent (5-300 K) magnetic susceptibility, and Curie-Weiss paramagnetism. The temperature independent susceptibility decreases linearly with Lu content, and becomes diamagnetic at 30 mol% Lu. The Curie-Weiss magnetism visible at low temperatures was identified as resulting from a few ppm of Fe contaminant. However, Fe contamination does not contribute to the temperature independent paramagnetism. No contribution from Ce3+ could be detected. The fact that the magnetization decreases with Lu content, even though the concentration of oxygen vacancies, and the lattice defects associated with them, increases, indicates that neither is coupled to the magnetic field. Weak, temperature-independent paramagnetism in non-metals is usually attributed to a second order, Van Vleck-type magnetization. However, Van Vleck paramagnetism requires that the population of the first excited state be constant within the range of temperatures investigated. We discuss possible modifications of the large band gap electronic structure of undoped ceria which could account for our observations.

Abstract The artiopodans represent a diverse group of euarthropods with a typically flattened dorsal exoskeleton that covers numerous pairs of biramous ventral appendages, and which are ubiquitous faunal components of the 518-million-year-old Chengjiang Lagerstätte in South China. Despite their abundance, several Chengjiang artiopodans remain poorly known, such as the large euarthropoda Retifacies abnormalis, Hou, Chen & Lu, 1989, which is distinguished by the presence of mesh-like ornamentation on its dorsal exoskeleton. Although only a few ventral details were described in a single study in 25 years, it has been frequently featured in phylogenetic analyses that explore the relationships between Cambrian euarthropods. Here, we employ micro-CT and fluorescent microphotography to investigate the exceptionally preserved ventral morphology of R. abnormalis and explore its phylogenetic implications through maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference. Detailed morphology revealed here better supports R. abnormalis as a sister group to the diminutive artiopod Pygmaclypeatus daziensis , also known from Chengjiang, and strengthens the close relationship of these taxa that have been suggested by previous studies as early-branching representatives of Trilobitomorpha. Cephalic appendages suggest this animal might be a scavenger, possibly feeding on soft-bodied organisms. Different pairs of pygidial appendages suggest an anamorphic post-embryonic ontogeny, which adds to the understanding of the developmental mode of Cambrian artiopods, and further supports the statement that post-hatching segment addition occurred in the ancestor of Euarthropoda.
