Abstract Four-membered rings with a P2BCh core (Ch = S, Se) have been synthesized via reaction of phosphinidene chalcogenide (Ar*P=Ch) and phosphaborene (Mes*P=BNR2). The mechanistic pathways towards these rings are explained by detailed computational work that confirmed the preference for the formation of P-P, not P-B, bonded systems, which seems counterintuitive given that both phosphorus atoms contain bulky ligands. The reactivity of the newly synthesized heterocycles, as well as that of the known (RPCh)n rings (n = 2, 3), was probed by the addition of N-heterocyclic carbenes, which revealed that all investigated compounds can act as sources of low-coordinate phosphorus species.

Abstract The synthesis and crystal structure determination (at 293 K) of the title complex, Cs[Fe(C(8)H(6)BrN(3)OS)(2)], are reported. The compound is composed of two dianionic O,N,S-tridentate 5-bromosalicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazonate(2-) ligands coordinated to an Fe(III) cation, displaying a distorted octahedral geometry. The ligands are orientated in two perpendicular planes, with the O- and S-donor atoms in cis positions and the N-donor atoms in trans positions. The complex displays intermolecular N-H...O and N-H...Br hydrogen bonds, creating R4(4)(18) rings, which link the Fe(III) units in the a and b directions. The Fe(III) cation is in the low-spin state at 293 K.

Abstract The uncertainty in spatially heterogeneous Manning’s n fields is quantified using a novel formulation and numerical solution of stochastic inverse problems for physics-based models. The uncertainty is quantified in terms of a probability measure and the physics-based model considered here is the state-of-the-art ADCIRC model although the presented methodology applies to other hydrodynamic models. An accessible overview of the formulation and solution of the stochastic inverse problem in a mathematically rigorous framework based on measure theory is presented. Technical details that arise in practice by applying the framework to determine the Manning’s n parameter field in a shallow water equation model used for coastal hydrodynamics are presented and an efficient computational algorithm and open source software package are developed. A new notion of “condition” for the stochastic inverse problem is defined and analyzed as it relates to the computation of probabilities. This notion of condition is investigated to determine effective output quantities of interest of maximum water elevations to use for the inverse problem for the Manning’s n parameter and the effect on model predictions is analyzed.

Abstract Given the importance of high-latitude areas in the ocean–climate system, there is need for a paleothermometer that is reliable at low temperatures. Here we assess the applicability of the Mg/Ca-temperature proxy in colder waters (5–10 °C) by comparing for the first time the seasonal Mg/Ca and δ¹⁸O cycles of N. pachyderma (s) and G. bulloides using a sediment trap time-series from the northern North Atlantic. While both species show indistinguishable seasonal δ¹⁸O patterns that clearly track the near surface temperature cycle, their Mg/Ca are very different. G. bulloides Mg/Ca is high (2.0–3.1 mmol/mol), but varies in concert with the seasonal temperature cycle. The Mg/Ca of N. pachyderma (s), on the other hand, is low (1.1–1.5 mmol/mol) and shows only a very weak seasonal cycle. The δ¹⁸O patterns indicate that both species calcify in the same depth zone. Consequently, depth habitat differences cannot explain the contrasting Mg/Ca patterns. The elevated Mg/Ca in pristine G. bulloides might be due to the presence of high Mg phases that are not preserved in fossil shells. The contrasting absence of a seasonal trend in the Mg/Ca of N. pachyderma (s) confirms other studies where calcification temperatures were less well constrained. The reason for this absence is not fully known, but may include species-specific vital effects. The very different seasonal patterns of both speciesʼ Mg/Ca underscore the importance of parameters other than temperature in controlling planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca. Our results therefore lend further caution in the interpretation of Mg/Ca-temperature reconstructions from high northern latitudes.

Abstract Heterobifunctional (99m)Tc ligands are useful for antibody labeling using the precomplexation route. The aim of this work was to synthesize a ligand, which has sufficient chemical stability to be complexed with (99m)Tc without inactivating the reactive conjugation group. Using 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl N-(S-benzoylthioacetyl)glycylglycyl-p-aminobenzoate (OC2) >60% of the (99m)Tc complex was obtained at 80 degrees C in 20 min, which was separated from the free ligand and impurities by HPLC. After solvent evaporation, (99m)Tc-OC2 was conjugated with the monoclonal antibody mAb425 in 50% radiochemical yield. In all, the labeling method required about 1 h preparation time. The immunoreactive fraction of the (99m)Tc-OC2 mAb425 conjugate was 81%, indicating preserved binding capability after conjugation. Compared to recently described methods, which need in situ activation of the (99m)Tc complex, the application of OC2 saved time and reduced the number of manipulations with radioactive material.

Abstract A previous report that the spin trap 5-diethoxyphosphoryl-5-methyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DEPMPO) allows DEPMPO radical cation formation to be detected via the production of a carbon-centred radical adduct (assigned as the cis-hydroxyethyl species, formed by an intramolecular process) is shown to be incorrect. Rather, this and other paramagnetic species arise from the facile oxidation of trace hydroxylamine impurities present in commercial DEPMPO samples. As a result, techniques for the detection and elimination of such hydroxylamine impurities from DEPMPO solutions were developed and are described; these should prove to be of general use in EPR spin trapping experiments.
