    Abstract This study explored the role of live transcripts in online synchronous academic English classrooms by focusing on how automatically generated live transcripts influence the learning outcomes of lower-proficiency and higher-proficiency learners and on their perceptions towards live transcripts. The study adop ted a 2 × 2 factorial design, with the two factors being learner proficiency (high vs. low) and availability of live transcription (presence and absence). The participants were 129 second-year Japanese university students from four synchronous classes taught on Zoom by the same teacher under an academic English reading course. Learning outcomes in this study were evaluated according to the course syllabus through grades and participation in class activities. A questionnaire consisting of nine Likert-scale questions and a comment box was administered to explore participants' perceived usefulness of, perceived ease of use of, and perceived reliance on live transcripts. Results showed that contrary to previous studies reporting the effectiveness of captioned audiovisual materials in L2 learning, live transcripts as a special type of captions were not effective in promoting the grades of learners of either proficiency. However, it significantly improved the activity participation of lower-proficiency learners, but not that of higher-proficiency learners. Questionnaire results showed that there were no significant differences between learners of two proficiencies in their perceptions towards live transcription, which contradicts previous findings that lower-proficiency learners tend to rely more on captions. Besides enhancement of lecture comprehension, participants reported innovative uses of live transcripts such as screenshots with transcripts for notetaking purposes and transcripts downloaded for later review.

    Abstract Motivated by population growth in a heterogeneous environment, this manuscript builds a reaction-diffusion model with spatially dependent parameters. In particular, a term for spatially uneven maturation durations is included in the model, which puts the current investigation among the very few studies on reaction-diffusion systems with spatially dependent delays. Rigorous analysis is performed, including the well-posedness of the model, the basic reproduction ratio formulation and long-term behavior of solutions. Under mild assumptions on model parameters, extinction of the species is predicted when the basic reproduction ratio is less than one. When the birth rate is an increasing function and the basic reproduction ratio is greater than one, uniqueness and global attractivity of a positive equilibrium can be established with the help of a novel functional phase space. Permanence of the species is shown when the birth function is in a unimodal form and the basic reproduction ratio is greater than one. The synthesized approach proposed here is applicable to broader contexts of studies on the impact of spatial heterogeneity on population dynamics, in particular, when the delayed feedbacks are involved and the response time is spatially varying.

    Abstract A steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system relies on the photic driving response to effectively elicit characteristic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. However, traditional visual stimuli mainly adopt high-contrast black-and-white flickering stimulations, which are easy to cause visual fatigue. This paper presents an SSVEP dataset acquired at a wide frequency range from 1 to 60 Hz with an interval of 1 Hz using flickering stimuli under two different modulation depths. This dataset contains 64-channel EEG data from 30 healthy subjects when they fixated on a single flickering stimulus. The stimulus was rendered on an LCD display with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. Initially, the dataset was rigorously validated through comprehensive data analysis to investigate SSVEP responses and user experiences. Subsequently, BCI performance was evaluated through offline simulations of frequency-coded and phase-coded BCI paradigms. This dataset provides comprehensive and high-quality data for studying and developing SSVEP-based BCI systems.

    Abstract Crystalline white organic light-emitting diodes (C-WOLEDs) are promising candidates for lighting and display applications. It is urgently necessary, however, to develop energy-saving and high-efficiency C-WOLEDs that have stable and powerful emission to meet commercial demands. Here, we report a crystalline host matrix (CHM) with embedded nanoaggregates (NA) structure for developing high-performance C-WOLEDs by employing a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) material and orange phosphorescent dopants (Phos.-D). The CHM-TADFNA-D WOLED exhibit a remarkable EQE of 12.8%, which is the highest performance WOLEDs based on crystalline materials. The device has a quick formation of excitons and a well-designed energy transfer process, and possesses a fast ramping of luminance and current density. Compared to recently reported high-performance WOLEDs based on amorphous material route, the C-WOLED achieves a low series-resistance Joule-heat loss ratio and an enhanced photon output, demonstrating its significant potential in developing the next-generation WOLEDs.

    Abstract Background: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is one of the crucial inflammatory factors in alveolar bone metabolism during the process of periodontitis. Autophagy is indispensable for proper osteoblast function. However, the effects of autophagy on osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) in inflammatory microenvironment and the underlying mechanisms remain to be clarified. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether autophagy participates in hPDLSCs differentiation after treated with TNF-α and explore the underlying mechanisms.
    Methods and results: Characterizations of hPDLSCs were evaluated by Alizarin-red S staining, Oil red staining and flow cytometry. hPDLSCs were treated with various concentrations of TNF-α. Rapamycin or 3MA was used to achieve or inhibit autophagy activation. AKT signaling was inhibited using ARQ092. Cell proliferation was evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) assay. Real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assay (RT-PCR), western blot, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining and Alizarin Red S staining were applied to evaluate levels of osteogenic differentiation and autophagy. CCK8 showed that low concentrations of TNF-α had no influence on cell proliferation, while high concentrations of TNF-α inhibited proliferation. Low concentrations of TNF-α promoted osteogenic differentiation and autophagy, while high concentrations of TNF-α inhibited osteogenic differentiation and autophagy in hPDLSCs. The levels of osteogenic differentiation in hPDLSCs were partly effected after co-incubation with 0.1 ng/mL TNF-α with 3MA or Rapamycin. ARQ092 enhanced 0.1 ng/mL TNF-α-induced ALP expression and mineral nodule formation.
    Conclusion: Low concentrations of TNF-α promote hPDLSCs osteogenic differentiation by activation of autophagy via inhibition of AKT/mTOR signaling.
