Abstract Third ventricle tumors are uncommon and account for 0.6 - 0.9% of all the brain tumors. Tumors of the third ventricle are classified into primary tumors, such as colloid cysts, choroid plexus papillomas, and ependymomas, or secondary tumors, such as craniopharyngiomas, optic nerve gliomas, pineal tumors, and meningiomas. Third ventricular tumors are uncommon, and their treatment involves significant morbidity and mortality. The colloid cyst has a better surgical outcome and many approaches are available to achieve a complete cure. Choroid plexus papilloma is also a common tumor documented with its treatment majorly based on surgical resection. In addition to multiple treatment options for craniopharyngiomas, surgery is the most preferred treatment option. Ependymomas also have few treatment options, with surgical resection adopted as the first line of treatment.

Abstract Background: Smoking is a well-established cardiac risk factor there is dearth of Local data regarding clinical and angiographic characteristics of smoker patients.
Objectives: This study was planned to assess the differences in the clinical characteristics, angiographic characteristics, and in-hospital outcomes of smokers and nonsmokers after primary percutaneous coronary intervention at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methods: We included patients between 40 and 80 years of age diagnosed with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention from July 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018. Clinical and angiographic characteristics and in-hospital outcomes were obtained from the cases submitted to the National Cardiovascular Data Registry's CathPCI (Catheterization-Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) Registry from our site.
Results: A total of 3,255 patients were included in this study. Smokers consist of 25.1% (817) of the total sample. A high majority of smokers were male, 98.8% (807), and smokers were relatively younger as compared to nonsmokers with a mean age of 52.89 ± 10.59 versus 55.98 ± 11.24 years; p < 0.001. Smokers had higher post-procedure TIMI (Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction) flow grade III: 97.8% (794) versus 95.53% (2,329); p = 0.037, and they had a relatively low mortality rate: 2.69% (22) versus 3.16% (77); p = 0.502.
Conclusions: Smokers were predominantly male and around 3 years younger than nonsmokers. Diabetes mellitus and hypertension were less common among smokers and single-vessel disease was the more common angiographic finding for smokers as compared to 3-vessel disease for nonsmokers. No statistically significant differences in in-hospital outcomes were observed. ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in smokers despite younger age and the low atherosclerotic risk profile, in our region, emphasize the need for nicotine addiction management and smoking cessation campaigns at large and for pre-discharge counseling.

Abstract Background: Despite the high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Pakistan, no prior work has been done to specifically highlight the importance of education as a social vaccine against HIV. Therefore, our study focuses on differences in knowledge and practices regarding HIV and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among educated and uneducated adults.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out in which data was collected from all over Karachi. An individual was designated as educated if he had received education above primary school level. Individuals who had studied till primary school or less were considered uneducated. The questionnaire was split into four sections that assessed respondents' demographics, knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding HIV/AIDS. Chi square test was used as the primary statistical test.
Results: Out of the 446 adult participants, 235 (52.7%) were educated and 211 (47.3%) were uneducated. Educated participants were significantly more likely to have heard about HIV (183 vs. 39, p < 0.001) and had better knowledge about the symptoms of HIV/AIDS (p < 0.001). Among the participants who knew about AIDS, a greater percentage of uneducated (n = 28, 53%) than educated individuals (n = 68, 37%) believed that people suffering from AIDS should be isolated (p = o.o16) and that HIV can spread through water (40% vs 20% respectively, p < 0.001). Both educated (n = 49, 27%) and uneducated (n = 46, 89%) adults believed that awareness would help prevent the spread of HIV (p = 0.978) and were willing to educate their children about it (p = 0.696).
Conclusion: Our study revealed a gap in the knowledge about HIV/AIDS between educated and uneducated adults. There is an urgent need for awareness programs that especially reach out to the uneducated masses that are otherwise uninformed about HIV and are under high risk of acquiring HIV.
