Abstract Edema is one of the most typical symptoms of nephrotic syndrome. Increased vascular permeability makes a significant contribution to the progression of edema. Yue-bi-tang (YBT) is a traditional formula with excellent clinical efficacy in the treatment of edema. This study investigated the effect of YBT on renal microvascular hyperpermeability-induced edema in nephrotic syndrome and its mechanism. In our study, the content of target chemical components of YBT was identified using UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis. A nephrotic syndrome model was replicated based on male Sprague-Dawley rats with Adriamycin (6.5 mg/kg) by tail vein injection. The rats were randomly divided into control, model, prednisone, and YBT (22.2 g/kg, 11.1 g/kg, and 6.6 g/kg) groups. After 14 d of treatment, the severity of renal microvascular permeability, edema, the degree of renal injury, and changes in the Cav-1/eNOS pathway were assessed. We found that YBT could regulate renal microvascular permeability, alleviate edema, and reduce renal function impairment. In the model group, the protein expression of Cav-1 was upregulated, whereas VE-cadherin was downregulated, accompanied by the suppression of p-eNOS expression and activation of the PI3K pathway. Meanwhile, an increased NO level in both serum and kidney tissues was observed, and the above situations were improved with YBT intervention. It thus indicates YBT exerts therapeutic effects on the edema of nephrotic syndrome, as it improves the hyperpermeability of renal microvasculature, and that YBT is engaged in the regulation of Cav-1/eNOS pathway-mediated endothelial function.

Abstract In 1951, The Interim Regulations on Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine was issued by the Ministry of Health to restrict the practitioners' practice of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and to transform TCM, resulting in TCM facing the risk of interrupting its inheritance and development. In 1953, Yue Meizhong, a famous TCM physician, drafted a proposal about TCM development. After discussing and revising with Li Zhensan, the Director of North China Institute of TCM Experiment, the proposal was submitted to the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Party and Government Administration Council as a reference. The proposal made a retrospect of the long history of TCM development, elaborated the characteristic and significance of TCM, proposed the detailed suggestions about the establishment of TCM administration institutions at various levels, set up of TCM Academy and Colleges etc., which represented the voice of TCM professionals, and reflected the objective principle of TCM development.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the characteristics of nano-CaCO3 applicated in Xin Yue Shu Capsules.
Methods: Studied the effect of different dosages of aerosil or nano-CaCO3 on fluidity, bulk density, moisture absorption of Xin Yue Shu capsules spray drying powder. In vitro dissolution and ferulic acid stability of Xin Yue Shu capsules was observed.
Results: It significantly improved powder fluidity and bulk density of Xin Yue Shu spray drying powder when aerosil or nano-CaCO3 was added. But there was no significant effect on powder moisture absorption, ferulic acid in vitro dissolution and ferulic acid stability.
Conclusion: The effect of Nano-CaCO3 on improving powder fluidity and bulk density applicated in the spray drying powder of traditional Chinese medicine deserves studying further.

Abstract Liu Yue-heng, a famous doctor in Hunan province during Qing dynasty is the author of Shengcaoyaoxingfangpu (Guidebook of Chinese medicinal herbs) which systematically summed up the properties, flavors and channel tropism of the local herbal medicines and supplemented a lack knowledge of those. The book collected broadly folk and proved prescriptions and, combined with the author's clinical experiences. He collected and classified them as chapters, reflected geographical environment and folk custom culture with the distinctive regional characteristics of Huxiang. Its achievement is mainly embodied in the following aspects: it attached importance to herbs, highlighted Huxiang characteristics, the skilful use of folk and proved prescriptions and comprehensively differentiated etiology and pathogenesis, and proposed for doctors' professional ethics.

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Chinese prescription Fufang-Liu-Yue-Qing (FLYQ) has long been employed clinically to treat chronic hepatitis B, and we have reported its beneficial effects on liver fibrosis in vitro. The present study was investigated to verify protective effects of FLYQ on liver fibrosis in a rat model and to investigate the underlying mechanisms which have not been explored yet.
Materials and methods: Liver fibrosis was established by intragastric administration of 2 ml/kg CCl(4) twice a week for 12 weeks. During the experiment, the model group received CCl(4) only, and the normal control group received an equal volume of saline. Treatment groups received not only CCl(4) for 12 weeks, but also the corresponding drugs, colchicine (1.00 mg/kg/day) or FLYQ (300, 150, 75 mg/kg/day) from 5 to 12 weeks.
Results: Analysis experiments showed that FLYQ could significantly alleviate liver injury, as indicated by decreasing levels of ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, IL-6 and TNF-α. Moreover, FLYQ could effectively inhibit collagen deposition and reduce the pathological tissue damage. Research on mechanism showed that FLYQ was able to markedly reduce lipid peroxidation, recruit the anti-oxidative defense system, promote ECM degradation by modulating the levels of TIMP-1 and MMP-2, and induce HSC apoptosis by down-regulating bcl-2 mRNA, as well as inhibit the expressions of α-SMA and TGF-β(1) proteins.
Conclusions: Our results show that FLYQ is effective in attenuating hepatic injury and fibrosis in the CCl(4)-induced rat model, which should be developed as a new drug for treatment of liver fibrosis and even cirrhosis.
