Abstract Mining and mineral exploration has many effects on the surrounding environment. The present study reviews the hydrological and environmental impacts of coal and nonmetal mining operations by mine lifecycle stages and facility patterns. Further, a critical review of regulations and policies in South Korea focusing on the mining-water interaction, conservation, and management was performed to emphasize the current state of legislation in the country. The counties where mining was the primary employer in Gangwon-do province in South Korea were assessed for the mining impact on the community's social life and com-pared to the non-mining counties in the same province. The results of the comparative study showed the less education, healthcare and employment chances in mining counties than the adjacent counties with no mining activities.

Abstract Objectives: The effect of air pollution on the prognosis of rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) remains poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate the effect of long-term exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤10 µm (PM
Methods: We included 309 patients (mean age, 61.7 years; male, 44.3%) with RA-ILD. Individual-level long-term exposures to PM
Results: The median follow-up period was 4.8 years, and 40.8% of patients died or underwent lung transplantation. The annual average concentrations of PM
Conclusions: Our results indicated that high PM

Abstract Objective: To examine (1) the location of brain lesion that would predict post-traumatic delirium and (2) the association between volume of brain lesion and occurrence of delirium in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted by reviewing medical records of 68 TBI patients, categorized into two groups: the delirious group (n=38) and non-delirious group (n=30). The location and volume of TBI were investigated with the 3D Slicer software.
Results: The TBI region in the delirious group mainly involved the frontal or temporal lobe (p=0.038). All 36 delirious patients had brain injury on the right side (p=0.046). The volume of hemorrhage in the delirious group was larger by about 95 mL compared to the non-delirious group, but this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.382).
Conclusion: Patients with delirium after TBI had significantly different injury site and side, but not lesion size compared to patients without delirium.

Abstract In this study, gearbox radiated noise was successfully reduced through housing shape optimization. First, dynamic and structural-acoustic coupled analysis models of an agricultural UTV gearbox were developed. Then, the test equipment was configured to match that of the simulation model, and a test was conducted. The analysis and test results showed errors within 0.1 dB for vibration and 0.2 dB(A) for noise, indicating that the models were reliable. The housing design was then optimized using topology optimization based on the developed structural-acoustic coupling analysis model. The sound pressure level around the housing was used as an objective function for topology optimization. The optimal distribution of materials for the housing was also derived to reduce the radiated noise. Lastly, the housing rib was designed based on the optimization result, and an improvement in the radiated noise by approximately 2.43 dB(A) was confirmed in the operation area.

Abstract Neuroinflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases due to increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the central nervous system (CNS). Chronic neuroinflammation induced by neurotoxic molecules accelerates neuronal damage. B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) is generally accepted to be an important anti-apoptotic factor. However, the role of Bcl-2 in neuroprotection against neuroinflammation remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effect of Bcl-2 on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation in cortical neural stem cells (NSCs). LPS decreased mRNA and protein levels of Tuj-1, a neuron marker, and also suppressed neurite outgrowth, indicating that LPS results in inhibition of neuronal differentiation of NSCs. Furthermore, LPS treatment inhibited Bcl-2 expression during neuronal differentiation; inhibition of neuronal differentiation by LPS was rescued by Bcl-2 overexpression. LPS-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), were decreased by Bcl-2 overexpression. Conversely, Bcl-2 siRNA increased the LPS-induced levels of IL-6 and TNF-α, and decreased neuronal differentiation of NSCs, raising the possibility that Bcl-2 mediates neuronal differentiation by inhibiting the LPS-induced inflammatory response in NSC. These results suggest that Bcl-2 has a neuroprotective effect by inhibiting the LPS-induced inflammatory response in NSCs.
