Abstract Background: Perianal malignancies are rare tumors with unique presentations and treatment options.
Objective: To review published literature about primary malignancies that present on perianal skin and published guidelines and treatment options.
Materials and methods: A PubMed search was conducted for original articles about perianal malignancies.
Results: Squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and extramammary Paget disease are the most common tumors to present on perianal skin. Anal squamous cell carcinoma incidence is increasing and certain populations may benefit from screening. Surgical management is often recommended for localized perianal tumors.
Conclusion: Dermatologic surgeons should be familiar with the presentation and treatment options available for perianal malignancies.

Abstract Asphondylia borrichiae induces galls at the apical meristems of its host plant, Borrichia frutescens, and the larvae develop and pupate within the gall. During development, immature stages of the midge are attacked by four species of parasitic wasps; two of these parasitoids, Galeopsomyia haemon and Torymus umbilicatus, are the most common members of the guild, and both are hyperparasitic. In the current study, plots of B. frutescens were randomly assigned to control (unmanipulated), salted or fertilised in a long‐term press experiment. Although plots initially exhibited no differences in stem length, gall and flower densities, after 3 months, they began to exhibit significant differences, suggesting stress (salted plots) and vigour (fertilised plots). Galls produced on plants from fertilised plots were approximately 20% and 31% larger than those from control and salted plots, respectively. Larger gall diameter in fertilised plots resulted in a shift of the parasitoid community towards the largest parasitoid, T. umgbilicatus, whereas smaller galls produced in salted plots became biased towards the smallest, but gregarious, G. haemon; interestingly, this pattern held for T. umbilicatus across treatments, and the effect for G. haemon was not significant when all treatments were combined. This study suggests that abiotic factors that alter host plant characteristics, such as gall diameter, affect the composition of the parasitoid guild that attacks A. borrichiae, which has implications for the acquisition of enemy‐free space during host range expansion of the midge.

Abstract Patients with chronic schizophrenia and psychosis are more prone to develop hyponatremia. Hyponatremia could be due to medications e.g. antidepressants/antipsychotics or secondary to psychogenic polydipsia. They often present with altered consciousness, seizures and falls. Rapid correction of hyponatremia in patients with psychogenic polydipsia has been associated to cause rhabdomyolysis, an under-recognized yet serious condition which if left untreated can result in various complications e.g. acute kidney injury, electrolyte abnormalities. We report a case of young patient who had background illness of schizophrenia and presented to department with severe hyponatremia secondary to psychogenic polydipsia and was eventually diagnosed as case of rhabdomyolysis due to rapid correction of hyponatremia. Objective of case report is to highlight the correct diagnosis of underlying cause of hyponatremia and challenges associated with managing rhabdomyolysis with IV fluids that can result in worsening of hyponatremia, hence emphasizing the importance of close monitoring of sodium levels and measurement of creatine kinase in any patient who presents with severe hyponatremia, particularly in the presence of other risk factors for rhabdomyolysis and consideration of careful fluid administration strategies in relation to the relative onset and risk of over-correcting hyponatremia.

Abstract In Schizosaccharomyces pombe, septum formation is coordinated with cytokinetic ring constriction but the mechanisms linking these events are unclear. In this study, we explored the role of the cytokinetic ring component Fic1, first identified by its interaction with the F-BAR protein Cdc15, in septum formation. We found that the fic1 phospho-ablating mutant, fic1-2A, is a gain-of-function allele that suppresses myo2-E1, the temperature-sensitive allele of the essential type-II myosin, myo2. This suppression is achieved by the promotion of septum formation and required Fic1's interaction with the F-BAR proteins Cdc15 and Imp2. Additionally, we found that Fic1 interacts with Cyk3 and that this interaction was likewise required for Fic1's role in septum formation. Fic1, Cdc15, Imp2, and Cyk3 are the orthologs of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ingression progression complex, which stimulates the chitin synthase Chs2 to promote primary septum formation. However, our findings indicate that Fic1 promotes septum formation and cell abscission independently of the S. pombe Chs2 ortholog. Thus, while similar complexes exist in the two yeasts that each promote septation, they appear to have different downstream effectors.
